3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?Lubo
Yeah i know! good advice though, but its just making time to contact
dealers...of which I will do systematically "when I get around to it..."
Methinks I will stick to my sources to start with - hey! I can go and do a
spot of family geneaology when I'm there....
cheers

My intention is to buy from Denmark, Germany or Holland, and perhaps
Sweden, basically anywhere where they speak German...all
the countries you mentioned are buying from Germany(importing i ment)-many
reasons for that but best is to find car south and if possible-german dealer

I will say though, it doesn't like me entering my postcode preference in
germany, so am still trying...will travel as far as southern germany for a
good vehicle, and come to that, anywhere else in europe
Its interesting that this thread has been started because for UK
registration there is a mound of paperwork to complete, including HM Customs
& Excise, there are 'classes' and groupings for spec engine sizes, whether
its diesel or gasoline etc., etc.
I have all the necessary DVLA and VOSA paperwork if anyone is interested
in getting an idea of the bureacracy and red tape we have to fight our way
through, what I refer to as the 'true costs' of importing 4x4s into the UK.
ATEOTD I don't mind making it simpler for myself by keeping a vehicle
registered in europe, since it will be taken from there to Africa.
My intention is to buy from Denmark, Germany or Holland, and perhaps
Sweden, basically anywhere where they speak German...

Renate

Thanks Lubo
I'll have a look in Germany - do you perhaps have any names of
dealers?
Left hand drive won't be a problem as we also drive on the (wrong)
side of the car here in Holland...
My thoughts for getting a right hand drive were:
1) I am playing with the idea of registering the car in the UK to
save on license fees/road tax (here in Holland around EUR 1200 per year)
2) If I move back to South Africa I can take the car with me - it's
illegal to import used left had drive cars to SA :-(

Subject: [ELCO] 3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?
Hi all!
I'm starting to look at an 80 series as an upgrade from my
previous 75 series troopie. I'm a strong believer in the KISS (keep it
simple stupid) principle and therefore would prefer a vehicle with as few
fancy gadgets as possible (in my view the more gadgets/technology, the more
potential breakdowns that I can't fix myself in the bundus).
Basically what I am looking for is an oldish 80 series with manual
gearbox and an 1HZ 4.2 diesel (non-turbo) engine.
Does anyone on the forum know of a place in Europe/UK where one
could get this type of vehicle?
Were the 80 series ever sold in Europe/UK with the 1HZ engines?
It seems to me as if all the diesel 80 series I see advertised in the
UK/Europe are equipped with the TD engines.
If these vehicles are hard to come by, how difficult (and how
expensive) would it be to buy an old 80 series with a busted TD engine and
fit a 1HZ? Any places that can be recommended to do this type of
conversion?
Any advise and/or tips will be appreciated.
Regards
Paul
