3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?

Hi all!
I'm starting to look at an 80 series as an upgrade from my previous 75
series troopie. I'm a strong believer in the KISS (keep it simple
stupid) principle and therefore would prefer a vehicle with as few fancy
gadgets as possible (in my view the more gadgets/technology, the more
potential breakdowns that I can't fix myself in the bundus).
Basically what I am looking for is an oldish 80 series with manual
gearbox and an 1HZ 4.2 diesel (non-turbo) engine.
Does anyone on the forum know of a place in Europe/UK where one could
get this type of vehicle?
Were the 80 series ever sold in Europe/UK with the 1HZ engines? It
seems to me as if all the diesel 80 series I see advertised in the
UK/Europe are equipped with the TD engines.
If these vehicles are hard to come by, how difficult (and how expensive)
would it be to buy an old 80 series with a busted TD engine and fit a
1HZ? Any places that can be recommended to do this type of conversion?
Any advise and/or tips will be appreciated.
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul
I also started out with the same criteria, particularly as I am about to
do a trip south through Africa.
However, I could not find this spec motor in the UK. I cant remember if
I never found any, but if I did then they were very high mileage. So I
have settled for a typical UK VX spec with everything, so plenty that
can go wrong and challenge me if it wants to...
Are you originally from South Africa? If so I would recommend looking at
buying one there and importing it... Cost for shipping is reasonable.
With the exchange rate prices are also pretty reasonable.
Good luck
Regards
Graham.

Hi Graham

Yes - I'm from SA originally. Importing a cruiser would be my last
resort due to all the admin involved - especially since I'll be using it
in Europe and north africa for the next couple of years.

I haven't given up on the option yet - although if I import from SA,
I'll probably buy the cruiser in Botswana where cruisers are around 70%
chaeper than in SA......

Cheers
paul

Thanks Lubo

I'll have a look in Germany - do you perhaps have any names of dealers?

Left hand drive won't be a problem as we also drive on the (wrong) side
of the car here in Holland...

My thoughts for getting a right hand drive were:
1) I am playing with the idea of registering the car in the UK to save
on license fees/road tax (here in Holland around EUR 1200 per year)
2) If I move back to South Africa I can take the car with me - it's
illegal to import used left had drive cars to SA :-(

3rd world spec 80 series - where to buy?Lubo
I will say though, it doesn't like me entering my postcode preference in
germany, so am still trying...will travel as far as southern germany for a
good vehicle, and come to that, anywhere else in europe
Its interesting that this thread has been started because for UK
registration there is a mound of paperwork to complete, including HM Customs
& Excise, there are 'classes' and groupings for spec engine sizes, whether
its diesel or gasoline etc., etc.
I have all the necessary DVLA and VOSA paperwork if anyone is interested in
getting an idea of the bureacracy and red tape we have to fight our way
through, what I refer to as the 'true costs' of importing 4x4s into the UK.
ATEOTD I don't mind making it simpler for myself by keeping a vehicle
registered in europe, since it will be taken from there to Africa.
My intention is to buy from Denmark, Germany or Holland, and perhaps Sweden,
basically anywhere where they speak German...

Renate

Its interesting that this thread has been started because for UK registration there is a mound of paperwork to complete, including HM Customs & Excise, there are 'classes' and groupings for spec engine sizes, whether its diesel or gasoline etc., etc.
I have all the necessary DVLA and VOSA paperwork if anyone is interested in getting an idea of the bureacracy and red tape we have to fight our way through, what I refer to as the 'true costs' of importing 4x4s into the UK.
ATEOTD I don't mind making it simpler for myself by keeping a vehicle registered in europe, since it will be taken from there to Africa.
My intention is to buy from Denmark, Germany or Holland, and perhaps Sweden, basically anywhere where they speak German...

I'll have a look in Germany - do you perhaps have any names of dealers?
Left hand drive won't be a problem as we also drive on the (wrong) side of the car here in Holland...
My thoughts for getting a right hand drive were:
1) I am playing with the idea of registering the car in the UK to save on license fees/road tax (here in Holland around EUR 1200 per year)
2) If I move back to South Africa I can take the car with me - it's illegal to import used left had drive cars to SA :-(

Hi all!
I'm starting to look at an 80 series as an upgrade from my previous 75 series troopie. I'm a strong believer in the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle and therefore would prefer a vehicle with as few fancy gadgets as possible (in my view the more gadgets/technology, the more potential breakdowns that I can't fix myself in the bundus).
Basically what I am looking for is an oldish 80 series with manual gearbox and an 1HZ 4.2 diesel (non-turbo) engine.
Does anyone on the forum know of a place in Europe/UK where one could get this type of vehicle?
Were the 80 series ever sold in Europe/UK with the 1HZ engines? It seems to me as if all the diesel 80 series I see advertised in the UK/Europe are equipped with the TD engines.
If these vehicles are hard to come by, how difficult (and how expensive) would it be to buy an old 80 series with a busted TD engine and fit a 1HZ? Any places that can be recommended to do this type of conversion?
Any advise and/or tips will be appreciated.
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,
I believe John, with the signature line Toyj80 runs an ex-NATO vehicle that
sounds like the spec you need. He=B9s not posted for a little while, but he
might be able to help, or indeed anyone else who knows where these things
are disposed of

Hey Lubo,
I=B9ve looked on Mobile.de in the past and the =8Ccruisers seem even more
expensive than here in the UK!
I think that=B9s because Germany has a huge vehicle export industry to Africa,
Russia and other developing countries.
I=B9m having frustrations at the moment, because I saw some cheap 4.5 petrols
a few months ago and could do nothing about it. Now I=B9m in the market, all
the vehicles seem to be going crazy. Typical....

Isn't G Brown Esq due to produce a pre-budget statement soon? I have a
suspicion that if you hang on a bit petrol 4x4s could suddenly become
quite a lot cheaper (and possibly diesel ones too).

Hi Paul,
I will only comment on one point the engine. The 1HZ might be a
reasonable plodder but due to it being indirect injection (IDI) it is
not very fuel efficient (on a kW's/L of fuel burnt basis) it dumps a lot
of soot into the oil, due to the nature of combustion it creates a lot
of thermal stress on the head which if your injectors are a little
scruffy will cause it to crack. The cooling system has to work much
harder as the thermal losses with the IDI motor are much higher. The oil
has to be changed every 5000km otherwise soot loading becomes that great
that wear begins to accelerate very fast.
Factory turbo is direct inection, yes it has a turbo but so what diesel
and turbo are like wine & cheese or air and breathing the two are a
match made in heaven. The specific fuel consumption is much better it is
a watercooled turbo and diesel turbo's don't run very hot compared to
petrols (not much over 650?C when working very hard versus 950?C for a
petrol) the engine runs so clean you can often push oil change intervals
to 30-50,000km or beyond (with good oil and routine oil analysis and
regular filter changes). The cooling system is stressed much less
because of the much higher thermal efficiency of the DI engine. I know I
will NEVER own a IDI engine ever again.
If in the middle of nowhere I would be much happy to know I have the
ability to if I have to cover 20,000km of hard driving and only spin a
fresh oil filter at 10,000km (versus four oil changes and still know the
engine is wearing faster), if I come up against some steep terrain I can
waft up it on the big mid range torque of the turbo instead of having to
thrash the living hell out of the 1HZ to get some grunt. If it all turns
to custard and I have to do a runner from bandits or something in some
third world country I know I can very rapidly head straight to 100mph
plus if the terrain is smooth enough and outrun most other 4wd's.
But it is your call.

Hi Craig

Your points are all valid, but yes, the 1HZ is a personal preference for me (I had one, it took me to great places without ever giving problems, and a couple of my relatives use them on their farms with up to 500k km's on them without any major engine work required).

You do bring up a couple of facts complicating my decision. I thought the decision was as simple as:
TD engines have risk of BEB's failing (I'll be looking at an older 80 series), 1HZ have risk of cracked head. Not much I can do to prefent BEB failure (except replacing them, which is expensive), but I can keep a watch on engine temps and thereby prevent a cracked head, therefore the 1HZ was the obvious choice for me. Speed and power are not considerations for me, as the only times I feel that the 1HZ does not produce enough power for my needs as on highways. Offroad, I've never felt that I needed more power as the 1HZ has more than enough torque to get me through all obtacles I've had to get through so far.

My technical knowledge stops short of any major engine work. I can keep the car running under most conditions, except if something is seriously wrong with the engine in which case I would need to rely on the local mechanics. In Africa the guys know the 1HZ very well, but since the TD engines are for the most part not sold in African countries, I'm scared to see what they may do if they have to do any work on a TD engine. Now I know cruiser engines can last (almost) forever, but I don't trust this Murphy guy...
The availability of spare parts is also a strong consideration - with the 1HZ chances are I can walk into any Toyota dealer in Africa and buy spare parts off the shelf which means I won't have to halt my trip for a week or two waiting for spare parts (invariably waiting in a big city where I could have been spending time in the bush).

The regular oil changes are a major schlepp though. It's really a pain in the butt to have to change the oil every now and again on a trip. I assumed it would be the same with the TD engines, but you've just thrown in a big plus point for the TD engines. Mmmm... 20 000km between oil changes would mean no oil change (or one at most, depending on route taken) between UK and Cape Town...

The additional power would also be nice, although I've become used to just taking it easy up steep hills. As far as outrunning bandits - I doubt that even the TD engines would be faster than an AK47 bullet.... ;-)
The majority of bandits use cruiser pickups with the very same 1HZ engine (with last oil change probably the day before it was bought/stolen), so in theory if I have a bit of a headstart, I should at least be able to stay ahead of them with my 1HZ with new oil... ;-)

Now my turn to bombard you with a couple of questions (hope you don't mind):
1) Why does an IDI engine produce more thermal stress on the engine's head? I've heard of 1HZ engines failing due to cracked heads, but never received an explanation that went any further than to say that the head cracked due to overheating. I didn't realise it related to the way in which an IDI works.

2) You mention that with an IDI more soot ends up in the oil. I always thought the only way for soot to end up in the oil is through the gap between the piston and cilinder walls, and that this will only start happening once the engine starts wearing out. If I understand you correctly, an IDI engine will dump large amounts of soot in the oil, even when new, whereas a DI engine will not do this?

3) This may be a really dumb question, but it seems to me that DI diesels produce a louder clacking sound than IDI engines (not quite sure how to express the sound in words, but what I mean is the sound of the engine seems to be louder, especially under acceleration). Why is this?

Hi Paul,
I will only comment on one point the engine. The 1HZ might be a reasonable plodder but due to it being indirect injection (IDI) it is not very fuel efficient (on a kW's/L of fuel burnt basis) it dumps a lot of soot into the oil, due to the nature of combustion it creates a lot of thermal stress on the head which if your injectors are a little scruffy will cause it to crack. The cooling system has to work much harder as the thermal losses with the IDI motor are much higher. The oil has to be changed every 5000km otherwise soot loading becomes that great that wear begins to accelerate very fast.
Factory turbo is direct inection, yes it has a turbo but so what diesel and turbo are like wine & cheese or air and breathing the two are a match made in heaven. The specific fuel consumption is much better it is a watercooled turbo and diesel turbo's don't run very hot compared to petrols (not much over 650=C2=BAC when working very hard versus 950=C2=BAC for a petrol) the engine runs so clean you can often push oil change intervals to 30-50,000km or beyond (with good oil and routine oil analysis and regular filter changes). The cooling system is stressed much less because of the much higher thermal efficiency of the DI engine. I know I will NEVER own a IDI engine ever again.
If in the middle of nowhere I would be much happy to know I have the ability to if I have to cover 20,000km of hard driving and only spin a fresh oil filter at 10,000km (versus four oil changes and still know the engine is wearing faster), if I come up against some steep terrain I can waft up it on the big mid range torque of the turbo instead of having to thrash the living hell out of the 1HZ to get some grunt. If it all turns to custard and I have to do a runner from bandits or something in some third world country I know I can very rapidly head straight to 100mph plus if the terrain is smooth enough and outrun most other 4wd's.
But it is your call.
Cheers,
Craig Vincent

=09Hi all!
=09I'm starting to look at an 80 series as an upgrade from my previous 75 series troopie. I'm a strong believer in the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle and therefore would prefer a vehicle with as few fancy gadgets as possible (in my view the more gadgets/technology, the more potential breakdowns that I can't fix myself in the bundus).
=09Basically what I am looking for is an oldish 80 series with manual gearbox and an 1HZ 4.2 diesel (non-turbo) engine.
=09Does anyone on the forum know of a place in Europe/UK where one could get this type of vehicle?
=09Were the 80 series ever sold in Europe/UK with the 1HZ engines? It seems to me as if all the diesel 80 series I see advertised in the UK/Europe are equipped with the TD engines.
=09If these vehicles are hard to come by, how difficult (and how expensive) would it be to buy an old 80 series with a busted TD engine and fit a 1HZ? Any places that can be recommended to do this type of conversion?
=09Any advise and/or tips will be appreciated.

They never fail in japan it is a lubricant misapplication problem mainly.

They are not exspensive to change and once done if you swap to a
correctly blended oil the problem will not reoccur and iff doing routine
oil analysis you will have plenty of warning of a bearing failure.

That's a myth watching the temp gauge will not help. I can think of a
IDI mitsubishi I took for a drive as it was sluggish, I temporairly
fitted a pyro probe and the exhaust temp was over 950ºC just as I was
getting up to speed before I even started pushing it. I had the
injectors rebuilt and made a few other changes and tried again and the
exhaust temp had dropped to 650ºC at the same time the water temp maybe
dropped a needle thickness. On IDI engines as the injectors get tired
the spray pattern tends to spread dramatically and spray raw fuel all
over the inside of the pre-comb chamber as this boils off and ignites it
drives huge amount's of heat into the head and cracks it. To get the
water temp to move you need to raise the whole water jacket temp not
just a localised overheating.

They are basically the same engine to work on the turbo engine
(especially if you mean 1HD-T) has a different head but tappet
adjustment is the same, all the accessories around the outside are the
same, they take the same oil, fuel , & airfilters, the bottom end of the
engine is similar. About the only time the differences really matter is
if you were doing a full engine teardown. If looked after the turbo
should outlast the engine.

What spare parts are you going to need the only thing is possibly
injectors but you only change them about every 100,000km anyway.

On a 1HZ it will be the level of soot in the oil that will force an oil
change by 5000-10,000km it will be up around 2-4% (you really don't want
to be much above 3% as it tends to form a lapping compound like slurry
as it interacts with other contaminants) the 1HD-FT will be around 0.2%
(mine)- 0.5% at 10,000km and the 1HD-T might be nearer 0.4-0.8% and all
other wear metals will look good on the DI engines. You do need to do a
few oil analysis's to see a pattern for your engine but a friend was
running 50,000km oil changes (with Amsoil marine oil) on a 1HD-T with
filters every 10,000km and the oil still looked good on a oil analysis
and in reality did not need changing.

You have a point a pleasure boat docked with a family of four at
Auckland port a few years ago and customs were surprised when the
father handed them a semi automatic Barrett 50bmg sniper rifle and asked
for it to be looked after till they left. Customs asked what is it for
to which they replied pirates as we can drive them off from in excess of
a km well outside the range of there pistols and rifles. I think the
poor customs man was a bit shocked.

The combustion chamber is in the cylinder head on the IDI on the DI it
is in a bowl on top of the piston in the IDI the fire starts in the
precomb in the head and then radiates out into the cylinder bore which
causes pumping losses and a lot of heat soaks into the head. See my
above comment about injectors. I have seen a lot of cracked IDI heads
and unless a rad hose blow's off or a thermostat jammed closed if you
check the injectors they are just about allway's in poor condition. One
poor guy I met put three brand new heads on a 3B Toyota before I asked
him if he had replaced the injectors and they were trashed and had
destroyed his original head and two new replacements 4th time lucky with
new injectors and he had no more problems.

Yes exactly the IDI combustion process is not very clean whereas the DI
is and the high pressure common rail is cleaner still. That why new cars
are all DI now.

Not a dumb question, that was the one downside to the DI engine in the
past it was noisy the combustion occurring in the top of the piston
tended to radiate out through the block. So for passenger cars IDI was
used as the combustion noise was not as offensive but fuel consumption
and emissions suffered because of it. Fiats diesels may not be the
quietest in the world but they now run a fairly smart injection system
that shapes and stages multiple pulses of fuel per power stroke to
obtimise fuel consumbtion, power/torque, noise, & emmissions. To drive
them I find them quite responsive down low whereas some manufacturers in
the struggle to meet emissions laws seem to be too scared or not able to
tip in decent amount's a fuel to the point that the engine's are very
lazy off idle (100 series cruiser is a perfect example).
I hope the above helps,
Craig.
