When do you think they are needed and what are the pros and cons when you have them (road speed, engine speed etc)
I see some people are runing them on 285 tyres.

Well I ran 35" tyres with standard diffs. I then changed to 285/75/16s and I got 4.88s from JW. With an auto it gives batter down hill control.

I would say you are fine with 285s with standard diffs.

Paul,

I'd agree with Paul; you don't really want 4.88s with 285/75 16s. I put 4.88s on an auto 80 (which had 4.10s as standard) to correct for 36.5" tyres and I've still got lower than standard gearing overall...

As Paul says 285s are ok with standard gearing. I guess if you always stick to motorway speed limits and would prefer brisker acceleration and more engine braking then maybe go to 4.56s if its an auto or 4.10s if its a manual; you'll be able to go up to 35"+ tyres if you're so inclined without another re-gear.

All the best,
Toby
