Way OT here but how do you stop the metal rods sparking like crazy and destroying your microwave if left in long enough, Roger? Have you've tried this and can vouch that it is safe and doesn't cause sparking?
If not, I would treat this suggestion with a huge dose of caution...

I think he might mean the oven. I generally put welding rods in the oven for a while before using them.

it depends on the type of electrode the time that this will remain to the oven
