Alright guys,

so few years back my mate Barry from Portsmouth chopped his 100 into a double cab pickup, think it ended up on eBay a few years ago. I always thought it was cool.

more recently been sent pics of another one that been done as a single cab which is also really cool and that’s the way I think to go.

Just wondering if any of you on here have done it?

I’ve looked into bringing in 79 from South Africa or Australia but I can’t justify the cost, will be 25k minimum and will have leaf springs and be manual !

I recently got to drive a 79 and I just didn’t think it was refined enough either, neither was the performance breath taking like people have told me it would be, small cabin as well really surprised me.

so in my mind il end up with a auto, rear coiled cruiser pickup, cheap as well, which means il off-road / green lane it and use it to move stuff and tow with, spending 25k I won’t be using it like I’d use a 330k 100 !

the car I’m going to use is a 50th edition 100 series 1hd fte

the rear of the sills inside and out are a bit rotten now at the very rear, so chopping will mean I don’t have to worry about that, so another bonus. Also the car has a water leak from the sunroof, so again il be getting rid of that too.

The car has also done 330,000 miles, so it’s pretty tired. I just think it’s the perfect candidate to chop into a pickup. It also means I can sell my hilux.

Plan is to use a brand vw transporter rear drop side body, they are nicely made and the drop sides are easy to change length, panels are ally, the width is same as cruiser mirror width. So it is a bit too wide.

Kind regards

Mike

I read an article about 200 converted into pick up as well by a farmer

Not yet Mike. But the rust on my 60 is doing this for me!! Often thought about it. A 100 pickup looks very cool.

I seen lots the 200 builds !

I think it’s because the 200 is more power and offers the luxury the 79 is missing, also the chassis is a lot stronger !

Tommy at West Coast Offroad did one a while back could ask him for a few pointers and problems encountered

There was an 80 pickup on ebay a while ago, That looked good, (or was it on here? Did it get stolen or something) ....Any way, Yes do it, I would if i was younger and had the facilities ......... Something i always toyed with when i had the 80 Resto, Project.... The 100 looks good Chopped.... Crack on!

Coolest chopped pick up Cruiser around still has to be Adams 6x4 80 series with a tipping bed .....and that was done years ago

I think I have to do this, as even if I get it all wrong the cruiser is worth more in parts than whole Anyway.

Im sure you've already looked but Google images have a few 100 series utes, And there are a few 80 series pickup/ute youtube vids... Cant find anything regarding 100 series... But i bet they are on youtube somewhere...... Crack on

Thanks for support lads, il shall start to make a plan going to see the rear body hopefully next weekend, I got the choice between double cab and single cab Vw body, so need to have a measure up, I quite like the idea of the bed having no overhang at the rear, might sound odd but there’s a really cool patrol one that’s just been finished

your right about YouTube lots of 200 and 80 and gu patrol Ute / pickup conversions but only a few images on there of double cab 100 pickups.

the rear window I’m currently trying to track down, I’d like it from an older pickup with a normal old school window seal, so maybe from a hilux but I don’t think it will be wide enough, l200 rear window is quite big so maybe one of those.

obviously i will be breaking up the truck for parts of the bits I don’t need, I’ve put an add up already.

If anyone does see pick up 100 pics please post them, I don’t have social media so I don’t have access to where I guess there all posted on the internet !

If you send me a PM I'll put you in touch with a chap I know who has done a cracking pick up conversion on his 100. I'm sure he'll give you all the pointers you need.

I’ve started to gather up some info, I know there will be a lot of wiring, I’m told most of it can be removed.

The central locking will need to be fooled as it will only have two doors and no boot !

my plan, as I will be doing it at weekends is to always leave the car mobile, as will always have to move it out the workshop for my dad as it’s his business.

Chop the rear off, then test fit the bed, get a feel for how to chop the bed to suite, then mount it, so then can eye up how to do the bulkhead, where to get the window situated ect.

I’m going to run a steel tube around the very corner of the bulkhead, to give a rolled edge, also I won’t have to worry about warping panels as much either, and less filler.

hoping to make the rear bulkhead in 3 or 4 sections. I need it as low profile as possible to move the seats back to not have to sacrifice leg room !

Keep up the Enthusiasm... Where are you based Mike?

Totally encouraging this effort, but I know you would have thought about it : if you want a pickup, why not but one?

Admittedly the 79 can be basic, depending on what you want out of it. But there are some fairly refined pickups around, and given you are starting from a 14+ year old 100, likely to be in a better condition 10 years from now.

( Putting on flame retardant suit ) :)

This is the truck I’m planning to cut

What your opinion guys, I’m going for a single cab, using the body from a Vw drop side transporter, there quite cool looking body’s if you’ve ever seen one. The body I want to have same length as current rear bumper, so there not loads of over hang at the back.

Hi Mike - be interested to see how you get on with this conversion - please post pics as you go along? Cheers.

Hi mate, yeah il make it like a mini build thread. I know it’s not the first one but il try and show how I do it, not that I’m 100% yet how il do it !
