Banging my head against a wall.

Predictable really :( Some specialist 4x4 policies don't use or generate NCB, I had one underwritten by Highways I think it was when I've had more than one 4x4 to insure with a similar premium to an NCB policy. If you could get the 120 onto a policy like that you could use your NCB on the tiny car. I think that was arranged through Accademy.

I'll do a bit more shopping but rapidly loosing the will. Whole plan falls apart if I end up back in the city so might even be pointless. Certainly not going to pay a premium (pun intended :violin: ) for insurance.

Lots of talk and good comments about Accademy on my local 4X4 forum.

There is no point.

Just got off the phone with the local NFU office. For the Honda, 1700something. For a 2003 1.3 Yaris valued around 2500, £1500. TPFF only - £1800. All of this with a £500 excess.

The guy said it would be better in June when I had a year no claims discount. We pretended it was June. Honda came to £1500something. He admitted it might not be better.

So, there is a very valid reason to have your NCB protected.
He said that my renewal should not be that bad but there would be an increase. I am now basically forced into staying with Chris Knott and LV because I cannot move. A move would cost me £1000s.
It does not sit well with me that because of 1 accident (a fender bender as well) that I am now “forced” into staying with one company.

If I can put a greenie hat on:
Everyone keeps telling us we need to drive better cars and be kind to the environment etc. I am looking to buy a better car purely for selfish reasons – I want cheaper motoring. Maybe the tactic of high tax, high fuel price etc has worked then. Problem is I am screwed. I am now tied to driving the LC for another 2 years (assuming the renewals are not in line with what I have been quoted) before anything is else is an option.
Roll on the melting ice caps

I’ll stop now – I see no reason to continue shopping around as the pattern seems the same everywhere.
/a somewhat despondent person.

We missed this consultation http://www.oft.gov.uk/OFTwork/markets-work/othermarketswork/motor-insurance/- as individuals we have all faced the ridiculous increases in premiums because car insurance is a mandatory service. As a club we could collate our collective renewal experiences and submit if they would take a late submission. At worst Crispin, you could call the people up here and have a vent  . I think the OFT didn't broadcast this consultation very much........

I've done what you are trying to do - I've swapped from an 04 100 series (plus a weekend car on diff Flux policy) to a daily driver (Skoda fabia diesel - 2002) which has my NCB attached and an 80 policy linked to that policy. The 80 insurance started at zero NCD, but got 20% when linked by Direct Line - where the main policy is. Skoda insurance £400, 80 insurance £380.

The hardest part was persuading an insurance company to accept my NCD - I'd had a company car for 16 months and LV etc said that my max NCD lapsed after 12 months - Direct Line give you 2 years (ie it's valid provided the last policy expired up to 2 years ago)

There is a way to do it - you just haven't found it yet!

I find the whole NCB a bit of a farce. I accept that it shows you're a safer driver and therefore a better risk to cover but then allowing someone to protect their NCB against claims just seems to defeat the whole idea. it means a NCB is kinda pointless.
The same goes for what has happened to you and Tony and countless others. You have two cars, one of which you drive all the time, one is an occasional driver. The common denominator is you - you are a careful driver so why don't you have the NCB and not the car.

I spoke to one of the underwriters about it and "it's just the way it is done". Obviously protecting your NCB in another income for the insurance company. It's....wait for it....Insurance on Insurance.

Bend over sir, enjoy while I insert this splintery pole up your ar.......e you enjoying that? Who cares.

Absolutely - it's all about the green.....whatever they can find to charge you for they will. I spotted on the house insurance renewal the other day a £32 quid cancellation charge. A charge for not wanting something.

God help me if I ever want to claim against one of these policies.......

So…

I have now bought a Toyota iQ. The shopping trolleys at tesco which attach to wheelchairs are bigger. As Simon, the parts manager who supplies stuff to members here said “No self-respecting man shall ever drive a car which, while sitting in the driver’s seat, you can touch both front and rear windscreens. Sadly, he has a point.

Insurance for the car - £370 a year with zero NCB and all truths told. Compared to everything else, pretty happy with that. I called up Admiral (it is on a dual policy with a promise to add the wife’s Qashqi (spelling??) in June. So shocked was I, I called them up to confirm. After making one adjustment, the price actually came down.
So, the LC shall now rest for the week and become a weekend driver :( I shall be doing my 36mile each way commute in a 3 cylinder 998cc petrol engine with a VVT ‘box attached. 95mph is obtainable on a level road. Doing 70 and the engine actually feels like it wants to stall and is a shade under 2000rpm. Apparently it’ll do 72mpg. Ha ha.

Only issue I now see is that I’ll be at the wrong end of 36 miles when the snow comes. The LC will be on the drive and I’ll be in Aylesbury… Hey ho….

Yeah but SWMBO can come get you and you can winch the iQ onto the roof - it'll look like a 'Yota roof-box

Glad you got it all sorted. Does the drivers seat actually go back far enough for you???

Whaaaaa haaaaa haaaaaa ha!!!!

Sorry couldn't resist! Well done, looks like a smart move indeed!

Oddly, the seat goes back further than I need. While adjusting it, I braked. The the hell us that short that you need the seat that far forward! Airbags will imprint Toyota logo on your nose.

Shut up Tony. You have your feminine side, this is my foray. :p

Like the roof box idea

you're a better man than me, I couldn't drive one of those, it would drive me mad.

Crispin, that sounds like the perfect car to ensure you never get speeding fines - you'll do anything to prevent there ever being photographic proof of you driving that thing :o
:laughing-rolling:

Nice one.

TBH I love using SWMBO's Yaris - it's no hot hatch but makes a nice change from the truck now and then. My mate (that I loaned my 90 to for 11 months back in 2009/10) actually gave it up for a a Smart Fortwo  - and loved it :D

Well at least you wont be skint now. My mum has an Aygo and it has 45k ish on it now and it drives like a normal cheap car with well over 100k on it. The 1 litre 3cylinder engine is rapid if you dare to rev it but I can easily run the tank dry on the motorway after 150 miles of spirited driving so not as efficient as you would expect.

My wife just said "There is frost already forming on the cars. Do you want to put yours in a pillowcase?"

Hi Crispin.

Don’t listen to all the banter you just got yourself an excellent and green little car. I got one of the first IQ’s new from Toyota here in West Sussex about 3 years ago and love the little car more every day. My wife Caron loved the car so much that a year later she put her order in for new white one. Now we have his and hers Toyota IQ’s manual gearbox, SAT Nav, BlueTooth, climate control and we get about 60mpg average. I have to say except of buying the 96 Land Cruiser 80 TD it’s been a one of my best decisions.

We love our IQ’s

These photos were taken last year with all the snow.

Weapons of Mass Destruction is my wife’s IQ.

Whoever lives in the middle house either needs some more insulation or they growing weed in the roof

Well, trip home, 70-80 offered up an average of 60mpg.
I need cruiser control though :(
