This part looks like a condenser but is attached to the coil on the same bracket as the ballast resistor. The condenser is located on the distributor.

I know nothing of the 40 series, but in the old days, all petrol coil ignition cars had a condenser on the coil live LT terminal. It should have a rating on it if you need to replace it.

Clive, thanks for the insight. It looks like a condenser I was just confused in that I have never seen an ignition system with two condensers.

The condenser in the distributor is for spark suppression. The one fitted to the coil will be for RFI, probably fitted by a previous owner suffering interference on his radio.
