Gearbox slipping whats my Collie worth??

Thanks Chris for the heads up on the autobox specialist may be worth a call and you are right i didnt actually drop the sump and clean/replace the strainer. This did actually cross my mind but after the slipping i thought its a bit late now perhaps this is why the box is slipping due to my not doing it in the first place really hope not :o
Chris has a point but I doubt it’s the cause as the strainers are huge and designed to back flush when draining the fluid. Besides, you said first drain contained silver particles. I think this slipping was happening long before you came on the scene. It may have even had some sort of additive added to make it seem better for the sale.

Having pondered on this if it was me I'd go down the mending it at an auto trans repair shop route. If its a " good Collie" in most respects especially in the rust and interior departments then its worth repairing and put the cost down to experience.
The reason I say this is I think good Collies will be the next thing to start going up in price as the better ( less rusty) ones start to leave the poorer ones behind. They are rare on the road these days and the ones i've looked at recently have been poor in condition. Its not very often I regret selling anything but letting the V6 go was a mistake. Something in rock solid condition with low mileage should have been kept and put away for later . Getting a good condition one will get harder as rust really takes a hold of axle cases and sills then they suddenly will disappear from the roads.
Although they are becoming enthusiasts trucks there are still plenty being used normally but they are really one failed MOT from the breakers.
JMO and felt like a ramble.

Must Agree with Andy. Fix it if you can. The Colorado is up there with the best of them... My biggest regret was selling my Collie... And yes iv noticed the price increase for good Collies... Mine had 285,000 on the clock when i sold it... so its proof they are capable trucks... and most members here with the iconic 80.. Have owned a 90.. Stick with it if you can...

Again thanks all for the advice and encouragement but as previous the Collie is just sitting on my drive doing nothing except taking up room it shares the drive with my p6 3500 and a galaxy so is not ideal. It was meant to be my everyday car when i had got it all sorted ie trans fluid change trans remote cooler cambelt oil filters etc which i had nearly done albeit for the cooler but alas the box started slipping. I have tried all the breakers suggested and others and eblag links but not luck no one has come back to me with any boxes for sale suitable and am only glad i didn't sell my galaxy as i would be everyday carloss now i will give it another few days if no luck Collie will be on eblag again thank you for all you help advice and encouragement :text-thankyoublue:

Bad luck on your problems, but rather than just looking at second had boxes, have you spoken to any transmission specialists to get a guide price for repair, at least then you know what’s below you rather than hoping the second hand box will last. I put a secondhand engine in my transporter T5 but could never get the comfort in my mind to trust it to go long distance camping, not that it ever broke down!

Your going to take a hit on it if you sell it as it is, yes it’s gonna cost to fix it, but what guarantee will you have on it’s replacement, and that’s more money again and maybe more jobs too

Cheers

I have spoken to an auto transmission specialist who said i could replace the filter/strainer and fluid again which may give it a little more time but can't guarantee this and really is best to find another working box. He said as a complete rebuild of this box will be very expensive at least he was honest and if i could find a reasonably priced decent auto box i would keep my Collie ;)

What are the options (read headaches \ possibilities) for doing a swap to a manual gearbox?

My wife may say the same for me these days, but let’s not ask her!

Could another option be trying to pick up a rust troubled mot failure, taking all the gearbox system and parting out the rest to take some cash back?
Yes that’s a fair bit of work but at least you can test the box before spending anything

Cheers

Lovely. Got to love a Rolls Royce eh !!

Just bear in mind the sticker that should be attached to any green oval.

“One Wife- Livid”

Seriously, we don’t tend to bash green ovals on here but please please please be sure about this if it’s a Range Rover.

“Out of the frying pan and into the fire” springs to mind but I wish you heaps of luck and sincerely hope you don’t need it.

I had a range rover once. Now I'm better.

Next post, "Gearbox slipping, what's my Range Rover worth?"

Seriously, good luck with it, you might strike lucky Chas.

I see the profanity filter isn’t working on the forum just now!

I used to get all the RR’s and LR’s to work on before I left the motor trade, and developed a lifelong hatred for them both!

Best of luck!

I know i have opened a hornets nest but please let me leave on a nice note i have had many R.Rs over the years and know their faults i dearly love the Collie but seems a nigh impossibility to find an autobox and beacuase of this reason i am no Collie owner anymore sorry .
