I know that this has been mentioned before in posts here and there but I don't recall a thread about it. My windscreen surround has a line of small rust patches right along the top edge. I heard some explanation to do with the screen and mount moving about causing the paint to be rubbed off and corrosion starting etc. This weekend, I had water dripping on me from the top of the screen. If I leaned right, it could be seen running down the A pillar and out of the hand hold.
This is NOT blocked sunroof drains. They are clear and working well.

I have had a little dig in there this morning and there seems to be a considerable amount of gunge that comes out. Slightly worried about digging right through to the inside!

Anyone got the story on this and more importantly the cure? Should I dig everything out that's loose and try to reseal with flexible sealant? Doesn't seem to happen when driving, just when static and water can run into the seal.

Chris

If this one is a keeper I'd consider having the screen out Chris as I don't think you'll have any long term success putting sealant on with the screen in place. It might have had a new screen fitted badly which seems quite common (bad fitting that is). If it's been leaking all the time it was standing then you might need a bit of rust treatment before it has chance to rot away.

Yes, that had crossed my mind Jon. I have been dibbling in there today and the mastic is coming out pretty easily. It has the consistency of blue tack. Not particularly sticky and not in one piece just bits and bobs. Looks old. Certainly not providing a seal. Tempting to get some Dinitrol in there but it doesn't seem to be rusty and there isn't much evidence of long term leaking. It's maybe my recent antics that have disturbed the seal.

Dread to think how much it is to have Autowhatzit take my screen out and put it back in. OK I can take a hammer to it and say I hit an eagle or something and then just pay the excess, but it's a bit drastic for a chap like moi.

Any ideas?

Chris

Might be sealant a previous owner has squirted in there? I think the OEM install just bonds the rubber to the shell but installers don't always remember the bonding part  I don't think the likes of autoglass use OEM 'gaskets' either but I could be wrong.

Screens are not too bad to take out and use again. There are some good tools ranging from stuff that looks like garote wire to things like a handle with a small curved blade and a pull cord to drag it along.

If you are handy with the silicone gun you can get the proper adhesive and do it yourself, the key is proper cleaning and usually takes two people.

I used to do glass fitting if you need any help.

Just had a response from a local windscreen specialist re this and tinting. If I have the tints they'll do the seal FOC. I can have the screen removed completely (but the glass might break) and a proper job done or they can deal with it in place and clean it out and inject a sealer for now. They can't guarantee that'll work, but they have a high success rate and given the nature of the vehicle, age etc and the fact that it's not a big leak and that it has to be at the top of the screen given that it only leaks when standing, they reckon they can get it. Nothing ventured eh.

I'd like to get the tints done. Not going too dark this time. Maybe I should go silver!

Chris

Cheers Paul. I'm going to let them have a crack. I want the tints anyway so they can have a look and it sounds as though if they have to do the in out and back in again it won't be that much. And it's guaranteed work.

As mentioned above chris.

The screens com out easy, Ive taken alot out without any damage.

Harder to re fit them though.

I think take it out and if there is any rust behind it get it sorted. Its a nice truck and you dont want the rust cuming out around the top of the window in a few years.

Think the black tint will look better mate. Think the silver looks a bit cheap.Only my opinion.

Karl

We'll see what the screen chappie says. I'm leaving it to them. It's what they do after all. Doesn't look rusty in there from what I can see.

Probably go with black but not as dark this time. Can't see out! More a smoke this time than a limo effect.

Chris

I like the limo for the rear end or matt black paint  To stop people being able to see in.

Then smoke the rear doors.

Karl

Arf Arf.

OT - but went to my old employer's the other day for a meeting. I now employ them! Anyhoo, a message came over the tanoy.

"Would the owner of the dark grey Toyota Verso come immediately to reception please. There is smoke coming from under the bonnet" I nearly took one of the directors down the stairs with me as I burst from the office. Wondering why everyone was standing around the door when there was a car burning in the car park.

Oh yeah, verrrry funny. But not as funny as the words 'The contract is cancelled'. Odd I was the only one still laughing.

Chris

It was well done I have to say. Fished right in, I was.

Are you off to spire tints Chris ? Going to get the mini done if they happen to pass you a recommendation voucher.......

Yes mate. They sounded very helpful. Going to talk to them tomorrow. I'll book you in so that you can hand the voucher to me first then shall I? They're on Stand Road on't Whitt Moor.

Chris

Id be interested in knowing the price please lads as i want the 100 doing if i keep it

Cheers Karl

It says (on their website) £150 for a large car - 4x4.

Chris

That is cheap. When either of you go you can count me in as a defo if you want to try and do a deal with them

The best way to seal the scren id to hae it removed and refiteed with OEM seal with sealer on the body side as mentioned earlier. Aftermarket seals are IMO rubbish and not worth cutting a tree for, I had mine resealed here in spain with the new rubber tye supplied which was supoosedly OEM and it leaked worse thane with the old one in there. I bought the OEM one myself and had them refit and seal ect and no further leaks however, it id getting bloody hot here now........Karl!

regards

Dave
