Yes, cosier is nicer at a number of levels but there are cost implications for Tony. There is no point in him hosting us if it leaves him out of pocket. The costs are largely fixed irrespective of the numbers - so affordability is to some extent proportional to the number of people that come.
Yes, controlling numbers in the woods is a potential issue but by having laning days and other activities, we can dilute the concentration of people. For example, we spoke of running a workshop for those interested and there was some interest, however we did not get round to running the workshop (mostly my fault) as people were off laning still or just enjoying the sunshine and the contents of their coolerboxes
With Julian now confirming his participation, the ability to run workshops is much increased Having laning trips requires leaders to provide their time and efforts in showing a group round, so this does rely on the generosity and goodwill of a fair few people.
I think that the vast majority of people have a really great time at the Lincomb events and feel that they get value for money. Would they feel the same if the event was restricted to 20 cruisers and they had the run of the woods, cosy atmosphere etc but the cost was £100-150 per vehicle? We are talking about the difference between 20 cruisers and maybe 50, not 20 cruisers and 250.
We also want to make this an inclusive event and get as many club members involved as possible. Limiting numbers and hiking up the price does not support that aim at all. We also have members who don't know anyone else in the club and are not very active on the forum - these people should be made to feel welcome, not excluded from a clique.
That's my 2c anyway - I do see both sides of the argument but if we have to compromise, my vote is for enabling as many people to come as possible and keeping it affordable.
Cheers,
