LJ70 Build Thread!

OK guys almost time for another update.

What about a couple of washers to lift the back of the bonnet a fraction to get some more clearance?

I'm still thinking about that switch; what I think is the go is to leave the cabling there, but replace the switch so it's now a 2-position as opposed to a 3-position (IIRC the equivalent switch in my FJ73 had 3 positions; Off, Intermittent or On, and Washer squirt) so that you had on-off only... unless you want a giant water pistol!

That may still leave another live wire that could be used for something as well, not sure what though at the moment, but an additional switch using that could be a 2nd worklight.

Check the rules for wiring in aux rear lighting; IIRC in NSW they must only be operable when reverse is engaged (so takes a feed from the reverse circuit, much like a set of driving lights taking a feed from the high beam switch, as well as the isolator switch) Probably less of an issue in VIC at the moment as there isn't the annual road worthy inspection.

Was there a drain hole where the rust was? I know on my 4Runner the rust is congregating around the drain holes in the doors.... which is annoying, but also shows that in the past people haven't been that good at keeping them maintained. With the patches you've put in have you sealed the drain holes?

Thanks Ed but raising the rear of the bonnet wouldnt help as its towards the front where the batteries were sitting up too high. :eusa-think:

No the rear door hadnt rusted by any of the drain holes. The KZJ70 that this rear door and my passenger front door came off was a complete rust bucket!

Not sure if it had been used for launching boats or something but there was a lot of rot.

Its still got drain holes! :eusa-dance:

What about replacing the standard air box for one of these
http://www.knfilters.com/universal/apollo.htm
Could possibly squeeze a battery on that side then?

Interesting idea, thinking outside the box, I like it!

Sadly though I don't want to change my airbox, it took me a while to source a genuine KZJ70 airbox and after fitting it I found out on Toyodiy that it takes 80 air filters. So I then bought a reasonably expensive life time Toyota filter which should never need replacing as it can be washed. :icon-biggrin:

OK I've had a couple of little projects on at my 4 days at work this week (TAFE on a Friday).

Firstly the wire rack!

The auto electrician wanted me to build a mobile rack for putting reals of wire on that he can then real out when building looms/wiring 4x4's etc.

P2240015_zps72fc2ef5.jpg

The bars all lift out to make loading new reals of wire on nice and easy.

P2240016_zpsf240d9bf.jpg

P2240017_zps8f257a8f.jpg

I went and bought some nice heavy duty castors. These are rated to take 350kg each.

P2240032_zps5c3e727a.jpg

Bolted them to a length of 4" flat.

P2240033_zpsde1f0d34.jpg

P2240034_zps36e7c398.jpg

And welded the flat onto the rack.

P2240035_zps3aef2ba5.jpg

P2240037_zps6db0c385.jpg

P2240036_zps1010fceb.jpg

Started working out how to attach the back wheels, which my boss already had.

P2240038_zps16e7943d.jpg

Drilled, bent and welded some flat with a piece of solid round bar through the middle.

P2240039_zps22fa5133.jpg

P2240041_zpsfd0a1c10.jpg

P2240040_zps61975e8a.jpg

P2250076_zps3c19e425.jpg

P2250075_zps355b24da.jpg

P2250077_zps3a0f7719.jpg

Thats now gone for powder coating, so more pics when its back and fully loaded with wire being used in the fitting bay! :icon-cool:

Next little project.

This was a very quick Thursday afternoon one.

Firstly I cut and drilled 2 lengths of 2 x 1 box section.

P2270137_zpsa2ed65e1.jpg

P2270138_zps725ee00c.jpg

10 pieces of 10mm rod.

P2270139_zpsa129e6d0.jpg

Welded all the rods in position.

P2270140_zps6927fd4f.jpg

Added a few more bits of box.

P2270142_zps90f7fced.jpg

I added some bits of hose over the rods and positioned the new rack in position in a section of the factory/shop that we've just moved a load or engines from next to the Seriously Suzi shop.

P2270143_zps01029d46.jpg

P2270144_zps57608460.jpg

P2270145_zpsf2f798f2.jpg

I need to build one more to go next to it and that should be most of the display Suzuki rock sliders up off the shop floor.

Next little project was making a new bike stand for my bosses KTM after he broke the alluminium one.

P2250042_zps8296fe43.jpg

P2250043_zps2faef004.jpg

P2250044_zpse6ff0a01.jpg

P2250045_zps1780e89f.jpg

P2250049_zps4478e771.jpg

Decided to make the new one out of steel.

Cut to length and cleaned up on a linishing belt

P2250050_zps6b1638cc.jpg

P2250051_zps1e38df73.jpg

Onto the drill press.

P2250052_zps935606e7.jpg

P2250053_zps5a3ba444.jpg

Need to shape out the back.

P2250054_zps2d5b2392.jpg

So onto the milling machine.

P2250055_zps842f9fb6.jpg

I needed to try the newly machined piece on the bike, but that was in the other factory, so obviously I had to ride it across! :icon-twisted:

Slightly concerning when you pull the throttle back in 1st and the front wheel is instantly 3ft in the air!

Awesome fun though! I really must get another dirt bike when time and money allows. :icon-biggrin:

P2250056_zpsb282650b.jpg

P2250057_zps2616235f.jpg

P2250061_zps33a806b3.jpg

P2250062_zpsbf047b05.jpg

P2250063_zpsf2e8e01a.jpg

Cut and welded on some tube.

P2250064_zpsb2543896.jpg

P2250065_zps60550106.jpg

P2250067_zps696c1934.jpg

P2250068_zpsd90b676e.jpg

Hole sawed a piece of checkered plate.

P2250070_zps8ec1a280.jpg

And welded it on the bottom.

P2250071_zps106301cd.jpg

P2250072_zpsf5275f57.jpg

P2250073_zps25e13599.jpg

P2250074_zpsb60fb1d1.jpg

Another job I've been working on has been wrecking our first Jimny! We've wrecked heaps of Vit's and Sierra's (SJ's) but no Jimny's.

P2240029_zps32c3a2fa.jpg

I pulled some of the twist out of the roof using the forks to make stripping it a bit easier.

P2240031_zps59741921.jpg

P2250078_zps127fbf26.jpg

P2250079_zps7fd4d383.jpg

P2260111_zps89c3b056.jpg

P2260112_zps41d6d34e.jpg

P2260113_zpsb494d3c0.jpg

P2260114_zps0ec4ca02.jpg

I must have stripped getting on for 10 4x4's over the years and I've decided this is the best way to strip them.

Strip out the interior, then remove the body, pressure wash everything left on the chassis and then strip whats left. :icon-biggrin:

P2260115_zpscddbc071.jpg

P2260116_zps687fbd58.jpg

P2260117_zps9b6edc42.jpg

Actually surprising clean and good underneath especially considering its 15 years old. All the bolts still had different factory colored paints on them.

P2260118_zpsa3c05ce7.jpg

P2260119_zps0bd4f4fc.jpg

Seeing it like this I thought it would be awesome with a couple of seats and a roll cage on it! :icon-twisted:

My boss thought the same so we put it in the other factory in storage for now, rather than stripping it down anymore. :icon-cool:

P2270127_zps9382f23f.jpg

P2270131_zpscfd3decc.jpg

Seeing it sat next to the Vit got me thinking................

Comparing it to the Vit thats for wrecking the Jimny has about 100mm longer wheel base. So fitting a Vit body onto the Jimny rolling chassis would give heaps of clearance between the bulkhead and the back of the front wheels for bigger tyres. Also it would obviously have the much stronger live front axle as opposed to the weaker IFS.

P2270129_zps7814a0a9.jpg

P2270130_zpsa72b2793.jpg

Measuring wheel bases.

P2270133_zps072a5225.jpg

The Jimny wasnt much narrower, mayeb 50mm. Nothing a set of wheel spacers or rims with more negative off set wouldnt fix!

P2270134_zps3f6949ba.jpg

While on the subject of Suzuki's, we had some pics back from the graphic designer who is designing the graphics for Frankenzuke.

P2240018_zps04a6b12f.jpg

P2240019_zpsad099640.jpg

P2240020_zps8b99d2c2.jpg

P2240021_zps034f862f.jpg

P2240022_zps40079a7f.jpg

Weve asked him to combine a few of the features we like and come back to us with another design. :icon-cool:

OK enough work nonsense time to get back to the star of this thread.......................LJ!

I brought my batteries to work to test them and see if they need replacing yet.

P2240001_zpsd7fb0dd7.jpg

Loads of batteries in stock.

P2240002_zps3d428aed.jpg

Including 10, 12 and 13' Optimas.

P2240003_zpsea16e634.jpg

They charged up OK and were in good condition so I also brought in my other 2.

P2250059_zps7de5b0f1.jpg

They too are in good condition.

I brought home some dummy Optimas.

P2250080_zpsa0a69158.jpg

These are just empty cases used for test fitting purposes.

P2250081_zps50529d62.jpg

There is room for 2 13" Optimas on their sides.

P2250083_zpsc39ec176.jpg

P2250084_zps95c11b12.jpg

Or even the other way.

P2250085_zpsf0afb92f.jpg

I refitted my standard battery trays and 2 of my batteries.

P2260121_zpsb777e139.jpg

Found some dodgy wiring.

P2260123_zps10864382.jpg

P2260122_zps35b17dd8.jpg

So I pulled it all out and measured up for new wires.

I've made up all new earth's for the engine, chassis and body using much thicker cable, with the correct terminals with 10mm holes for the battery ends and 8mm holes for the other ends, all properly crimped and heat shrunk. :icon-smile:

No pic as yet, must have missed those.

I've decided that I will use and wear out the 4 batteries I've got first, and then buy 2 Optimas. I just couldnt justify buying 2 Optimas, even at cost price when I've got 4 perfectly good batteries that are all only a few years old.

Back to that rear door hinge that I cocked up next.............................

I hacksawed through the pin to get the 2 pieces back apart.

P2240004_zps6f5b05e3.jpg

P2240005_zps8dbc7401.jpg

By clamping the pin in the vice I was ablt to turn and twist the hinge leaf back off.

P2240006_zps784e95cf.jpg

P2240007_zpsebd4e7a7.jpg

And then punch out the remaining pieces.

P2240008_zps7a20a723.jpg

P2240010_zps1ff49c22.jpg

P2240011_zps834fa0d5.jpg

Drilled the hinge out to 11mm this time as 10mm was too tight last time for the 10mm rod.

P2240023_zps35ef9192.jpg

P2240024_zps3bf069fb.jpg

P2240025_zps3daa0ab1.jpg

Welded both ends of the pin.

P2240026_zpse5041d91.jpg

P2240027_zps6c410a60.jpg

P2240028_zps51919cd9.jpg

OK back to the storage box for the rear door......................

I bought an off cut of alluminium from the friendly Chinease guys who have moved in next door, and who build off road camper trailers.

P2260087_zps19a4e22a.jpg

P2260088_zpsc3496f7f.jpg

Cut to size on the guilitine.

P2260089_zpse464232a.jpg

Took the corners out on the bandsaw.

P2260091_zps502c8bcc.jpg

P2260092_zps1aa5945d.jpg

Marked where it needed folding.

P2260093_zps94cc433b.jpg

P2260094_zpsc8bc36d0.jpg

Onto the brake press for folding.

P2260095_zps221413a9.jpg

Sadly with that machine I can only bend 3 edges.

P2260096_zps580bfdff.jpg

P2260097_zps2aca74de.jpg

P2260098_zpsd0466d64.jpg

So I cut a piece of wood.

P2260099_zps994ed01d.jpg

P2260100_zps6dd88261.jpg

And clamped it in the wood working vice.

P2260101_zps723c25a1.jpg

P2260102_zps7aac3d68.jpg

And with the deadblow mallet I pursuaded it to bend along my line.

Crude but effective.

P2260103_zps228cfd4a.jpg

Not as neat as the other folds but will have to do.

P2260104_zps70ddf49e.jpg

P2260105_zps53b946a7.jpg

P2260106_zps197b335a.jpg

Needed to pull the corners together and weld them up next.

P2260107_zps9220818e.jpg

P2260108_zps729eca48.jpg

P2260109_zpsa71a1c38.jpg

Not pretty, but effective and once smoothed down with a flap wheel disc in the grinder they would look good.

P2260110_zpse3f2caa7.jpg

I brought the door back in and could start cutting the back of the drop down table to suite the new door storage box.

P2270146_zpse23e0cc7.jpg

P2270147_zps427d66e0.jpg

P2270148_zps871a4504.jpg

Marked it out.

P2270149_zpsed1a7774.jpg

P2270150_zps4d48b3b7.jpg

And cut it out using the jigsaw.

P2270151_zps714d6878.jpg

P2270152_zps0da51282.jpg

Quick test fit.

(Yes I probably should have done the top cut lower so its hidden by the table.)

P2270153_zpsfe235528.jpg

P2270154_zpsfceefa43.jpg

P2270155_zps72c5575c.jpg

Into the vice for drawer fileing all the egdes smooth.

Apologies I must have forgot to rotate this pic.

P2270156_zps3499b0e5.jpg

P2270157_zps5f1b3d3d.jpg

Measured, marked and clamped ready for welding.

P2270158_zpsd76edb97.jpg

Welded! The welds looked like pigion shit sadly.

Cant wait till I've learnt to TIG weld alluminium and can finally start turning out beautifully welded things!

P2270159_zpsff92f9aa.jpg

P2270160_zps91b6fa7e.jpg

I've run out of Dinitrol rust convertor so had to resort to Krust. Not good stuff but better than nothing.

P2270162_zps67a4adad.jpg

P2270163_zpsa88813ce.jpg

P2270164_zps2faa4a3d.jpg

P2270165_zps0578ee4f.jpg

I'm going to spray loads of Dinitrol cavity wax inside the door to hopefully prevent/slow down the rusting!

Spay painted any bare, cut metal.

P2270168_zpsc679d0bb.jpg

Found some rubber blanking grommets for the holes from the old spare wheel mount and the hole from the rear wiper.

P2270169_zpsd5305bcd.jpg

P2270170_zpsd7256ba9.jpg

In place and working beautifully!

P2270171_zpse1ed590b.jpg

P2270172_zps9e84f56e.jpg

P2270173_zps12f051e5.jpg

Decided to ditch the Toyota clips off the back of the fold down table box for something a bit stronger, not that the table has ever pulled off, but I guess it could.

P2270174_zps4dbea20c.jpg

In favour of Rivnuts.

P2270175_zpsb30ed270.jpg

P2270176_zps8e595766.jpg

P2270177_zps97e6a7bf.jpg

And thats as far as I got. :sleeping-sleep:

Got some big plans in the making but cant say anything just yet. :icon-cool:

Should have a really really really exciting update for you after tomorrow.

If things work out.

This could be the start of something amazing for me and my carear in the 4wd industry! :banana-explosion:

Good luck Ben! Hope you enjoyed today... I've got an inkling that you will, whatever happens as a result of it!

Interesting write up as always.

Thanks!

Then Michael wants some welding doing on his new 80 and I'm at TAFE all evening tomorrow. :sleeping-sleep:

Really really need to get some work done on LJ so shes ready for the next trip but I just dont have the time at the moment but all that should be changing very soon, meaning I will have a lot more free time! :icon-biggrin:
