LJ70 Build Thread!

Not my fault the girls here like my charming English accent!

Finishing Frankenzuke winch bar & 4WD Show.

OK firstly the house......................................

Havent done a huge amount, but one of the nights last week I moved back into my room. Still no carpet or curtains so I had to hang a bed sheet up as a makeshift curtain.

myroom600x448_zpsc0e7d9a0.jpg

Needed to build the shelf and hanging rail in my wardrobe.

P2120034_zps85e5a576.jpg

Built a frame first out of 2x1.

P2120035_zps5dcde27a.jpg

P2120036_zpsd63045b3.jpg

Followed by the shelf.

P2120037_zpse446e6ad.jpg

P2120038_zps469ddc3e.jpg

Followed by the hanging rail.

P2120039_zps19b13f62.jpg

P2120040_zps9b981f6c.jpg

Thats all I've done this week on the house as I gave myself the weekend off, but after work this week I will crack on and get the spare room finished.

The glazer came this week and changed the glass in my room and the spare room from 2mm to 6mm. This week the window tinter is coming to tint the windows for us. :icon-smile:

Anyway.................................

Enough of all this building work nonsense back to cars!

I went to pick up the new coil pack for the Astra and on the way the bloody alternator belt snapped.

P2110006_zpsb9d31600.jpg

P2110007_zps9423134b.jpg

I put the battery on charge as I'd had to drive without an alternator for a while so was worried I might have flattened the battery.

P2110008_zpsf3f894c2.jpg

Cover off.

P2110009_zpsf3cee1df.jpg

P2110011_zpsb8369a5a.jpg

Comparing the old coil pack with the new one.

P2110012_zpsfa74bfed.jpg

P2110013_zps220f84aa.jpg

Had a peak at the cambelt.

P2110016_zps5897bfe9.jpg

P2110014_zps11ed109c.jpg

Thinking I will change that next and the mechanic at work said he will help me, says it will take about 3 hours.

Since fitting the new coil pack the Astra seems perfect now, no warning lights and it has got a lot more power which is great. :icon-biggrin:

Frankenzuke next......................

This is the winch my boss gave me for the front bar I've been making.

P2120018_zpse5658ef0.jpg

Only 9500 LB but the car cant weigh much more than a ton so it should be plenty big enough.

P2120019_zps219d0651.jpg

I painted the winch bar black last week but it hadnt come out very smooth so I got some of this.

P2110002_zps53f0971d.jpg

And gave the bar 10 coats.

P2110003_zpscce732e9.jpg

P2110005_zpsdc75ccd0.jpg

I then sanded it down with wet n dry paper until it was as smooth as glass.

P2120020_zps5670ff6a.jpg

Then gave it a load more coats of black enamel.

P2120021_zpsd530b411.jpg

P2120022_zps8253a566.jpg

Next I could look at fitting the winch.

P2120027_zps037a2759.jpg

Supposedly a reasonable quality winch but made in China like all the other low mount winches on the market.

P2120028_zps60d3fde5.jpg

P2120029_zps2ab22377.jpg

We wont be using any of these bits.

P2120030_zpsd7c1016f.jpg

The first problem was the way in which the winch would mount in the bar, the free spool lever would be in the wrong place and even if it was on top of the winch it wouldn't be accessible inside the bar anyway.

P2120031_zpsaa553067.jpg

P2120032_zpsbb091c28.jpg

I sat the winch inside the bar.

P2130041_zps88b3a7ab.jpg

P2130043_zpsb3e020bd.jpg

I worked out which way to rotate the gearbox and unbolted it and turned it round.

P2130042_zps2331a2a5.jpg

P2130044_zps3245b562.jpg

Sadly I couldn't get it to rotate to perfectly 90 degrees to the fairlead as the bolts weren't spaced properly for this.

P2130045_zpsade44dae.jpg

I needed to cut the end off the free spool lever.

P2130048_zpsff9666a0.jpg

P2130049_zpscef5b18e.jpg

I bent up some 4mm steel.

P2130050_zps20e724cc.jpg

P2130051_zps2fdca1e4.jpg

P2130052_zps27655716.jpg

I welded a piece of 10mm round bar to the piece I bent up and drilled a hole in the winch bar for it to come through.

P2140056_zps1d6ac3a3.jpg

P2140057_zps6a2da9d4.jpg

Sadly as the gearbox on the winch wasnt square/90 degrees to the fairlead I had to make the hole bigger than I'd have liked to get enough movement to turn the free spool in and out.

P2140058_zps9c0e736c.jpg

P2140059_zpsef471999.jpg

If the gearbox on the winch had rotated to 90 degrees to the fairlead it would have been much neater as I could have had an 11mm hole for the 10mm solid bar. As this wasnt possible I had to find a way to cover the enlarged hole, so I found a track rod end rubber that looked perfect for the job.

P2140061_zps04c42cf3.jpg

Next I needed to make the nob which would control the free spool when turned.

Solid alluminium bar.

P2140062_zps5c6f9cab.jpg

Cut a piece off.

P2140063_zps5ba5a799.jpg

Marked and drilled some holes in it.

P2140065_zpsbca7b658.jpg

P2140066_zps461ea9b7.jpg

I also drilled a hole in the end of the 10mm thick bar.

P2140067_zpsfe73ecaa.jpg

P2140068_zpsd5d7e843.jpg

P2140069_zpse25f7f60.jpg

Test fit.

P2140070_zpsc144f7a6.jpg

P2140071_zps52e15884.jpg

P2140072_zpsfb919477.jpg

I wanted to shape the edges a bit to make it a bit more ergunomic.

P2140073_zps4f8624a7.jpg

I found the finger linisher worked best.

P2140076_zps17c2049a.jpg

P2140077_zpsb932c449.jpg

P2140079_zps3a43655b.jpg

P2140080_zps6f474cf4.jpg

I got a suitable stainless steel M5 bolt and tap.

P2140081_zps3625662f.jpg

And tapped one side of the hole.

P2140082_zpsa5b8bd4f.jpg

P2140083_zps5f51fde2.jpg

Bolt in.

P2140084_zps919afe6a.jpg

P2140085_zps430dfe77.jpg

So this is all the bits for the extended free spool lever.

P2140086_zpsd7623df8.jpg

I got all the cables ready to go from the winch to the albright style solenoid.

P2140088_zps45de0b48.jpg

All the correct sized terminals were properly crimped on and then heat shrunk, and rubber boots sourced.

P2140089_zps14b523ae.jpg

Got the earth attached first.

P2140090_zpsfb354f52.jpg

Winch bolted in position.

P2140091_zps3caff9fb.jpg

Got the piece that bolts to the winch fully welded and painted black.

P2140092_zps7518526f.jpg

And bolted it all in.

P2140093_zps12392e89.jpg

P2140094_zps61f47539.jpg

P2140095_zps44c996e0.jpg

P2140096_zps69d93256.jpg

P2140097_zpsd9a9b538.jpg

P2140098_zps28f146dd.jpg

Got the other cables bolted on.

P2140100_zpsed15dad6.jpg

The standard hook has been swapped for a more fitting red one.

P2140087_zps2afc7a30.jpg

P2140099_zps214f5192.jpg

Next job was bolting the lights on to the winch bar.

P2140101_zps6ab9aa98.jpg

P2140102_zps5a265e5c.jpg

P2140103_zps676d1418.jpg

P2140104_zps94de8ea0.jpg

We could then bolt the winch bar on.

P2140105_zps28677ac5.jpg

P2140106_zps285dc7a2.jpg

P2140107_zpsb7546d33.jpg

P2140108_zpsee94325e.jpg

Today I went to the 4wd show and like last year, I got a free ticket again.

P2160109_zps3af2335e.jpg

Felt a bit weird going back to the property where I spent my first 3 months when I first arrived here just over a year ago. I did wonder if I would even be allowed on the property if my old boss was on the gate lilke he was last year, but he wasnt on the gate and I never saw him. Probably for the best after he was so rude to me last time I saw him. :|

Anyway.........................

A bit overcast and cloudy today.

P2160110_zps56f1b992.jpg

Nice 40! It looks shorter than they normally do and the back side windows look like theyve been cut in half.

P2160112_zpsa827d52d.jpg

I thought this comp truck looked awesome!

P2160113_zps9f76fcc8.jpg

P2160114_zpse2d6494c.jpg

I was very surprised to see the worst winch ever bolted to the front of it. A piece of shit Tigerz11 one! :wtf:

P2160115_zpsec16ad1e.jpg

I got talking to the guys who were with the truck and I asked why theyd used such a poor winch and the guy was telling me they already had it and all it actually does is winch the chassis down to the axle to compress the front springs when on really tippy crazy angles!
They dont have a winch for recovery because the comps they enter if you need recovering its done with a manitou or and excavator!

They entered Tough Truck last year and are hoping to win it this year. :icon-twisted:

Tough Truck is next month and if everything goes to plan I will be there for free and will get closer to the action than any spectator is allowed to!

Dont want to say too much just yet encase is doesnt come off, but it is very exciting! :icon-cool:

Even if I'm not involved in that particular role I will still be going so expect lots of pics and videos of the action.

Anyway...........................back to the show.

Spotted my bosses stand and the team he had with him looked very busy which was good.

P2160117_zps1cffb72d.jpg

A few random pics.

My local 4wd clubs stand.

P2160118_zps877b2343.jpg

I liked how they had displayed this Disco. A pair of huge ramps and then another one on top of the one.

P2160130_zps0444ec69.jpg

P2160131_zpsa29217b8.jpg

Finally got to have a look at some Oz Tents in the flesh.

P2160132_zps30ae4fed.jpg

P2160133_zpsd4d57168.jpg

The RV1 would be big enough for 2 people, but I'm thinking maybe the RV2 or 3 might be a better size.

They also had the Oz tent jet tent bunker.

P2160134_zps0902340b.jpg

P2160135_zpsaeea6e72.jpg

They also had some cool military vehicles on display.

P2160136_zpsf5f289c4.jpg

P2160137_zpsff3445c7.jpg

I didnt stay too long as its pretty much the same every year, but I saw a lot of people I know which was good and it was nice to support the industry that employs me. :icon-biggrin:

Need to crack on and finish the building work this week and do some work on Michaels new 80 then we can start on LJ.

Got a 3 day trip coming up to an area in the High Country called Crooked River. I was reading some where that the track crosses the river 54 times! :icon-twisted:

Will be fun!

Where do you guys get those rubber terminal covers? I can't find them anywhere...

Thanks Ed.

Where do you guys get those rubber terminal covers? I can't find them anywhere...

Not sure where my boss gets them from but if you put terminal boots into ebay.com.au it comes up with loads. :icon-wink:

Ben, In one photo there is a sign that says "Adventure Circuit" ... i take it that you didn't go on it??

No not this year mate. I might take LJ next year and go round the track. :icon-biggrin:

I'm pleased with how the front bar looks on Frankenzuke.

P2170001_zps24b458d6.jpg

But I realized the LED lights were too close to the bonnet and the bonnet wouldn't open and close without tilting them forward.

P2170002_zpsaa3d663b.jpg
P2170003_zps73f5a7f1.jpg

P2170004_zps3da061bf.jpg

So we decided to move them forward.

P2170005_zps4670622e.jpg

P2170006_zps66c43a09.jpg

I also gave the bar another coat of paint before refitting the lights.

P2170007_zps94d96d4d.jpg

P2170008_zpsd5f77a94.jpg

P2170009_zps1aed028c.jpg

I also fitted the brackets on the back of the winch bar. So its now got 6 bolts each side.

P2170011_zpsc950debc.jpg

P2170012_zpsba0d2e84.jpg

P2170013_zps9a6fe7cf.jpg

Time for a bit of flex testing.

P2170022_zps8eefbefc.jpg

P2170016_zpse277a612.jpg

P2170017_zpsf035ee4b.jpg

P2170018_zps26e60581.jpg

P2170019_zpsa5cd4fc3.jpg

P2170020_zps511fe265.jpg

P2170023_zps417ca93f.jpg

P2170024_zpsbc4ada33.jpg

P2170025_zpse3bdd3d1.jpg

P2170027_zps3e2f5a0b.jpg

Michael swung by after work and wanted me to make a bracket for the air manifold in his new 80.

P2170032_zps6e9608b6.jpg

P2170033_zpsdeba5b9f.jpg

P2170034_zps0539c766.jpg

P2170036_zps3099f634.jpg

P2170037_zps224e2d30.jpg

P2170038_zpsf87c72c7.jpg

P2170039_zpsde4ae226.jpg

I really need to concentrate less on getting the house finished for Michael and concentrate more on LJ so with that in mind tonight I made a start.

I removed the rear door. This is the replacement one I bought a few years ago that has quite a bit of rot in the bottom, so the plan is to cut all the rot out and weld new metal in. Also the bottom hinge needs fixing.

P2170043_zps135a32b3.jpg

The other thing I want to do is cut the inside out and line it with aluminium and have a gas stove stored in there.

P2170044_zps25a80a42.jpg

All loaded in the Astra ready for tomorrow after work.

P2170045_zps390c126d.jpg

So the plan is to get the rear door fixed, painted and modified.

Then I need to start designing and making my triple battery tray for under the bonnet which will then get sent off to be electro plated.

I need to order two awnings, one for the side of LJ and one for the rear. Then I can start making my roof rack.

Also need to do a list and start ordering all the bits I need for when we rewire LJ. :icon-biggrin:

Got the GF's parents over at the moment; he used to have access to a Jimny so we've been showing him the pics of Frankenzuke...

I need to find a set of driving lights for my 4Runner...

Awesome.

I'm getting a light bar for the front of LJ. :icon-cool:

Just finalizing my plans for this:

http://toughtruck.com.au/

Will be going Thursday to Monday by the looks of it.

Give me a shout if you feel like coming down Ed. :icon-wink:

I've just mentioned it to the boss... we'll see what we can do! At the moment she's working that weekend and will steal the car as she wants it to go at 5am... BUT she's keen so she might try to swap weekends with one of the others.

Cool. :icon-biggrin:

Cant promise yet, but I will see what I can do ticket wise as all being well I will be working there. :icon-wink:

Few pics from my working week....................

(I've been doing heaps of other less interesting things like soldering up hundreds of bits for the super looms we make and sell, and making up diff breather kits and puncture repair kits but non of that seemed worthy of photos!)

I knocked up a couple of brackets out of some scrap alluminium.

P2180001_zpsd3acc7fa.jpg

P2180005_zpsb591a325.jpg

P2180006_zpscccea2e3.jpg

P2180007_zps110c73bd.jpg

The stuff came back from the electro platers.

P2190024_zpsae5855bf.jpg

So all the new trays that I've designed and built.

P2190025_zpscbda0b22.jpg

P2190026_zpse0bb7177.jpg

And the rock sliders for Michaels new 80 that I welded the checkered plate to. There now ready for powder coating.

P2190027_zps302ca391.jpg

P2190028_zpse6fc1475.jpg

And all the bits for the gate latches I've designed and built.

P2190038_zps83ac7035.jpg

P2190040_zpsec5e1a69.jpg

P2190041_zpsc9051ee7.jpg

P2190042_zps4da3b46e.jpg

Got the first 9 assembled.

P2190043_zpse8cc97d0.jpg

Frankenzuke is virtually finished but there were a couple of small issues to fix, one of which was the front brake hoses needed re-routing.

So I made some brackets.

P2190023_zps4cbddf48.jpg

And welded them onto the axle.

P2190030_zps542ee015.jpg

The short flexy hoses could then connect through the brackets to copper brake pipe.

P2190032_zps5294496c.jpg

As standard the Jimny has flexy brake hoses dropping down to each front brake caliper, but we wanted to run the flexies straight up from the diff so we re-routed the metal brake lines in the engine bay to bring them both down above the diff and ran new brake pipes along the axle.

P2190035_zps86a8d081.jpg

P2190037_zps0da22b60.jpg

I added another bracket to the chassis for the hoses to come down through as the engineer who is hopefully going to make Frankenzuke road legal wouldn't have liked to see the brake hoses not fixed properly to the chassis.

P2190046_zps6d3b8e05.jpg

P2190050_zps13859479.jpg

With the new brake hoses and pipes in place we could bleed the brakes and then put the wheels back on.

P2190048_zpsef982134.jpg

Got it outside to give it a wash.

P2190051_zpsa2c688fa.jpg

Also washed all the dirt out of the inside of LJ's rear door but more on that shortly.

P2190052_zpsc4babaa8.jpg

After the wash I applied a special polymer coating to the new paint work. This is so that if we decide to remove the graphics which are going on soon, in say a year or 2 it shouldn't fetch any of the paint off with them.

P2190053_zps594f2c4b.jpg

P2190055_zpse4918a21.jpg

All done.

P2190057_zpsf1152587.jpg

P2190058_zps0f962e05.jpg

P2190059_zps034b3b0f.jpg

So Frankenzuke is getting the graphics put on any day now, then a new exhaust and then magazine photoshoot and filming for the Tv program! :icon-cool:

OK LJ's rear door.........................

P2180008_zps683a1b51.jpg

This is the rot! Its been cleaned back to bare metal and rust killed a few times but the rot keeps coming through, so like cancer the only real solution is to cut it out!

P2180009_zps06761c3f.jpg

Cleaned back the areas with a flap wheel disc.

P2180010_zpsf208adc4.jpg

P2180011_zps2a6f5cd3.jpg

P2180012_zps3b727fa0.jpg

P2180014_zps08f5da6b.jpg

P2180015_zps7ab24456.jpg

P2180016_zpsa28f9d19.jpg

P2180017_zps8b7782b8.jpg

I unbolted the broken bottom hinge.

P2180018_zpsbf00ebff.jpg

P2180019_zpsbc49a841.jpg

The bottom pin has sheared off.

P2180020_zps48f27f4a.jpg

So I cut the remaining pin.

P2180021_zps481af3d9.jpg

P2180022_zps496f48c9.jpg

That was as far as I got on Tuesday night after work. Tomorrow I can work on it 5pm till 9pm so I'm hoping to weld new metal in and repair the cut out rot, repair the bottom hinge and look at cutting the center of the door out to take the gas stove. :icon-cool:

I'm going to order my awnings and then hopefully next week I can make my roof rack. :icon-biggrin:

Looking forward to the next trip report for LJ Ben, only one question, where's the tan mate? You've been out there a year now, what's going on

Looking forward to the next trip report for LJ Ben, only one question, where's the tan mate? You've been out there a year now, what's going on

That's because he's always inside working on LJ or Michaels house.
