LJ70 Build Thread!

thanks Ryan.

as soon as KAM pull there finger out and start selling them.

this is the reply i got to the last email i sent them a few weeks ago:-

Dear Ben

We should have some news with in the next 10 weeks. We are in the middle of a large company merger and the Toyota diff locker is high on the list of new locker to complete.

Thank you
Kevin

KAM

im going to buy a pair of lockers from them, and lower ratio ring and pinions for the diffs. cant wait!

Ben, can Karl sort you out with a working speedo cable?

found a few speedo cables that i think should fit, but there all in OZ, but even with the shipping costs will still be a lot cheaper than toyota.

Most of the Toyota cables are the same, you just need to get the right length.
I used a Hilux speedo cable on my FJ73 and HZJ75 .

thats interesting, thanks. maybe the 4-runner speedo cable will fit then as it is basically a hi-lux, just different rear end. :)

think i will wait till i start stripping it and see.

no tried that mate. i think maybe he just cuts them. i know myself when your very busy and your breaking cars its impossible to save all bits, and things like cables and hoses usually just get chopped straight through, as its quicker and easier. :)

worked on my truck from 8am till midnight yesterday. :|

my mates turned up at 9am and carried on with the body work.

P1000453.jpg

mean while i took the inner arch and pressure washed it.

before.

P1000455.jpg

after.

P1000456.jpg

P1000458.jpg

P1000459.jpg

P1000461.jpg

P1000463.jpg

after applying a layer of filler, theyd give it a blast over with primer, then sand it down a bit more and add more filler.

P1000464.jpg

P1000465.jpg

P1000466.jpg

P1000467.jpg

P1000470.jpg

i welded some pieces of metal over the holes where the original number plate used to mount, after id removed the number plate and light, and landcruiser badge.

P1000471.jpg

P1000472.jpg

P1000473.jpg

P1000474.jpg

sausage and egg sandwiches for breakfast.

P1000475.jpg

P1000483.jpg

P1000485.jpg

P1000486.jpg

id removed the cruiser badge and side repeater.

P1000488.jpg

P1000492.jpg

i then made a start on the inner arch. first i took a pic of where the brackets go, so i know what goes where when i come to re-assemble.

P1000484.jpg

then i used a wire brush in my grinder to remove any paint and underseal around any areas of rust to clean it back to bare metal.

P1000493.jpg

this revealed a tiny bit of rot.

P1000494.jpg

looks worse from the other side.

P1000495.jpg

so i cut it out.

P1000496.jpg

mean while more primer and filler was going on.

P1000499.jpg

i cooked lunch.

P1000500.jpg

P1000501.jpg

back to the inner arch and i welded a new piece of metal in.

P1000502.jpg

P1000503.jpg

and drilled the hole in it and ground the welds down.

P1000504.jpg

more primer, filler and sanding.

P1000506.jpg

P1000507.jpg

P1000511.jpg

mean while i made a start on the pair of LJ78 front radius arms ive got. i steam cleaned them after applying plenty of de-greaser, i then gave them a good going over with the grinder with the wire brush attachment, ready for painting.

P1000512.jpg

P1000513.jpg

rust killed any spots on the inner wheel arch where rust had been. i also gave the engine bay side a good sand over with some rough paper, because this will be sprayed at the same time as the body, in 2 pack primer and top coat. the underside will be stone chipped and waxoiled.

P1000514.jpg

they masked off the sills ready for a coat of stone chip.

P1000515.jpg

and the bottom of the rear aches.

P1000523.jpg

and gave it all a good coat of stone chip.

P1000524.jpg

P1000525.jpg

P1000526.jpg

P1000527.jpg

P1000528.jpg

the stone chip areas will be getting over coated in primer and top coat the same as the rest of the body. by this time it was 8pm and the lads understandably called it a day.

i carried on and used the shutz gun to stone chip all inside the front inner arch.

P1000529.jpg

i then removed the batteries, screen wash bottle and coolant over flow bottle.

P1000530.jpg

battery trays were full of mud and clay.

P1000531.jpg

i then managed to remove the other iner arch ready for rust killing and re-painting, the same as the other side. it also means i can give the inside of the wings a good coat of waxoiling.

P1000532.jpg

P1000534.jpg

i then got the front radius arms painted.

P1000536.jpg

P1000537.jpg

P1000538.jpg

i then used the shutz gun and stone chip to spray inside the rear arches.

P1000539.jpg

P1000540.jpg

P1000541.jpg

and rust treated rear door.

P1000542.jpg

i then removed the front door card.

P1000543.jpg

followed by the door handle.

P1000545.jpg

i love the fact everything feels so strong and built to last on these 70's. even the door handles are solid metal, the same as the dashboard.

P1000546.jpg

did the other side.

P1000547.jpg

i wanted to carry on, but it was 12pm and i thought it was too late to start grinding. dont want to upset the neighbours too much.

so back now to do another long day! 8-)

Chip Foose would be proud of you Ben,

as long as you gave him a Bacon Sandwich

i really don't think you'll need lower diff ratio's than what you've got,the 4.88's along with the 3.0 you'll never struggle for power, also your gear box has a lower ratio 1st and 2nd gear so you'll have even more grunt pulling away than a standard kzj70

that sounds good. i will have to wait and see when the engines fitted then. i know at the moment the 35"s really effect the gearing but i imagine with a bigger engine this would be less noticeable.

i am enjoying this thread immensely

glad your enjoying it mate.

i was worried maybe i hadnt taken enough pics.

Blimey, it's like watching an episode on Quest!

Helluva job there mate. Look forward to seeing it in the winner's enclosure at next year's British Indoor 4x4 show.

Right who's next.

Chas.......... Hmm, maybe some things really aren't possible

Chris

thanks Chris.

had another long day on it today. 8am till 10.30pm. :|

first i pressure washed the passenger side inner arch off.

before.

P1000548.jpg

P1000549.jpg

this revealed a hell of a lot of rust that i wasnt aware of, as it is on the edge that is inside the wing. at this point i was very glad i decided to remove this inner arch as i very nearly didnt bother.

P1000550.jpg

P1000551.jpg

my mates turned up to continue with the body work, so i gave the edges of the wings a clean up with the wire brush and then used some rust killer on them, as id noticed a few small spots of rust.

P1000552.jpg

P1000553.jpg

i then used the wire brush in the grinder to remove all the rust from the inner arch panel.

P1000554.jpg

P1000557.jpg

meanwhile my mate turned up in his hi-lux to drop something off and see how we were doing. he mentioned hed still got a small rusty hole he needed patching on the sill. so i said course ill do that for you mate, wont take long.
we were both wrong, the hole didnt end up being so small, and it did end up taking a while.

P1000558.jpg

he thought hed cut all the rot out a while ago, then hed screwed some tin over the top.

P1000559.jpg

when i started cleaning the surrounding paint off to find some solid metal to weld to, we found why the sill had rusted so badly.
looks like its been hit by a forklift, then badly repaired using filler.

P1000560.jpg

ended up cutting quite a lot out.

P1000561.jpg

then we found a bit more rot.

P1000563.jpg

so i cut a piece of sheet metal and used the bender to bend it in all the right places. i had to bend it around a scaffold tube to get the middle curve in the new panel to match the contour of the sill perfectly.

P1000564.jpg

P1000565.jpg

cut and bent another piece.

P1000566.jpg

P1000568.jpg

meanwhile the bodywork mates were starting to apply the 2 pack primer.

P1000569.jpg

P1000570.jpg

P1000571.jpg

P1000572.jpg

P1000573.jpg

P1000579.jpg

P1000581.jpg

P1000582.jpg

P1000583.jpg

got my 2 inner arches painted in primer on the engine bay side of the panels.

P1000587.jpg

P1000588.jpg

gave the hi-lux sill a quick blast over with primer. will need a bit of filler and then top coating, but at least it wont rust in the mean time.

P1000589.jpg

P1000590.jpg

after my mates had all gone, i got my truck out of the workshop, so that i could have a good clean up and try and get rid of all the dust.

P1000591.jpg

P1000592.jpg

P1000593.jpg

P1000594.jpg

P1000595.jpg

got the truck back in the workshop and carried on.
so both inner front arches had had a coat of primer on one side, and one arch had had one side coated in stone chip.

so i painted the last remaining uncoated side in stone ship.

before.

P1000596.jpg

after.

P1000597.jpg

sorted all the electrics out at the back. had to solder and heat shrink a few of the wires for the back lights.

P1000598.jpg

refitted part of the wiring loom and a few control box thingies in the rear arches, and instantly regretted filling the arches with waxoil 5mins previously.

P1000599.jpg

refitted my ply lining.

P1000600.jpg

removed the bottom catches from my old rear door and fitted them on the new one.

P1000601.jpg

i think the spare is going to live inside the cab from now on. 35"s of tyre seems to big for my back door.

so put it in the back after refitting the sub and hi lift jack.

P1000602.jpg

put a few screws in the wall to hang the arches up out of the way to stop them getting damaged until my bodywork mates come back to finish the paintwork.

P1000603.jpg

i pushed her back almost against the back wall. im now ready to begin stripping the front down and rust killing and re-painting, tomorrow after sleep because im feeling exhausted, from not having a day off for over a month and working 14+ hour days every day!

P1000605.jpg

P1000606.jpg

Blimey you sound whingey tonight fella - suck it up & get this slow assed job finished...

Famous last words huh

didnt get much done today at all. couldnt seem to find any enthusiasm and have felt tired all day. i hope im not coming down with anything.

i got the front jacked up and on axle stands.

P1000608.jpg

P1000609.jpg

looking down the panhard rod it is obvious it is twisted and the bush looks like its binding. so i think i need to sort the castor out.

P1000610.jpg

axle nearly off.

P1000611.jpg

P1000612.jpg

axle off.

P1000613.jpg

so the underside is now ready for rust killing any spots of rust, and then a good coat of stone chip, followed by waxoil.

P1000614.jpg

P1000615.jpg

P1000616.jpg

the in side of the wings is difficult to get to once the inner arches go back in, so i will be making sure theres no rust anywhere and that everywhere has got a good coat of waxoil.

P1000617.jpg

took all the bits that needed cleaning, and steam pressure washed them all.

P1000618.jpg

P1000619.jpg

one thing that i did notice was that the bottom mounts on the front shocks were loose, because the bottom bush had completely worn away, and unlike the rear shocks the fronts had got all the washers on.
the only thing that i think could of caused this is that the bottom mounts werent tight enough when they were originally fitted.

but i tightened them as tight as i could, but i dont think i ever managed to get the rubber bushes to compress to 75% of there uncompressed size as Roger mentioned.

am i doing something wrong? ive had a 17mm spanner on the main nut on the bottom of the shock, and to prevent the thread from turning ive had a 9mm spanner locked on the 2 flats that are on the threaded end of the shock.

i need to have it all back together and finished by next saturday, so the lads can come and spray it. then sunday will be spent refitting all the bits that cant go back on until after its sprayed.

wire brush, rust kill and paint:-

front axle
both battery trays
steering bars
panhard rod
the front end of the chassis and body
fuel filler neck

and then re-fit it all.
