Hey guy, I’m completely new to the Landcruiser scene and I’ve purchased a 1990 LJ71 Prado that I’m planning to do engine conversion. The original 2L-TE is in bits so considering putting a 1KZ-TE out of 1995 Hilux Surf that I have lying around.

- they are both auto so can I get away with leaving the original auto trans in or will the 1KZ auto trans be different??

- I know the wiring will be different but what else do I need to prepare for.

TIA

Hi, there are some differences, the LJ71 will have the same ECU to control the engine and gearbox where as the Surf will have separate ECU’s.

There isn’t much info on the internet about 1kz swapping with an Auto.

I am just about to do the same with my LJ78 (same as yours but a long wheelbase)

Essentially regarding the ecu's if you look at it there is an engine side of inputs which the 2lte and 1kzte looms are different but as you do the engine swap these looms swap over to go with the appropriate ecu... so no problem with this side of the wiring.

Body side of the ecu is like an output to the user interface, gauges power in etc.

So here's a pic of the 2lte and 1kzte ecu's they're both manual.

Here's a pic of the pin outs the 26 pin and 16 pin connectors are essentially where the engine side looms which you have to use the 1kzte looms with the 1kzte ecu.

The 12 pin connector is the link to the truck user interface... they're both 12 pin so i would say that these 12 pins are the same. Way to check is to compare this 12 pin connector between the donor truck and the truck you are swapping into, wire colours etc.

This ecu is from a lj78 auto that has a fault, I fitted a 2lte auto hilux surf ecu onto the lj78.

The auto 2lte ecu has a 24 pin connector which will match the 2lte wiring underbonnet wiring harness.

You can download ecu charts with what each pins do... but in this case you're only looking at the 12 pin connector.

Hope the info helps..
