Long range tanks

As some markets got aux tanks from the factory Toyota do a split filler for 80's (and some other models), with a knob you can pull out to direct fuel to the aux tank or leave pushed in to fill the main tank. Other than the knob it's like a normal filler from the users point of view. On a diesel you then just fit Toyota change over solenoids and run pipes to the aux tank and have a button on the dash to select which tank fuel is sucked from.

Thanks for the input guys. I just sent an email to tek-tanks inviting them to the thread to comment and provide some more info. Fingers crossed!

I have a plastic tank at Andy's lomas's place still, I think, I hope,.

Must make a plan to get it moved.

My old 80 GXL had the mechanism Jon described - very efficient. Had a second fuel gauge for the aux tank above the rear view mirror in a binnacle with the barometer IIRC. Push button switch ran off either tank. Neither lasted long when feeding the 4500efi motor

I think the change over solenoid method is much better for overland use than the pump into the main tank method. If you get a tank full of dodgy fuel you can isolate it and if your main tank gets holed you can still use the aux one.

Hi Land Cruiser Owners,

Richard from Tek-Tanks. I'll be glad to help with any queries you may have regarding tanks. Seems as though everything so far has been pretty well covered by your own experience. Pleasae let me know if there's anything I can clarify.

Richard.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for coming here to take a look.

I guess the best thing you could offer would be a "kit" bolt in tank suitable for our cruisers :) Similar to what ARB do ... but without the brand name and shipping costs!

I know one or two of the forum members have bought tanks for water storage from you before and they highly highly recommend you (as can be read above.)

OG did you get rid of the main tank then? guess this tank only an option for petrol vehicles and uses fittings from a normal tank
otherwise it would be nice to add a bit more capacity to a diesel vehicle, but still need fittings to shift fuel from it to main tank
and 42 litres extra is only 2 jerrycans worth...

Yes that is my only petrol tank. The space where the main tank went is taken up by an 80 litre LPG tank.
I can't see any reason why the tank could not be used for diesel. You would need a way to fill it (Y junction in the fill pipe perhaps?) and a way to select which tank to use. Although its only just under 10 gallons thats still 200+miles worth.
