Hi i'm looking for an intercooler for my friends 80 series
1993 12v auto .
Any advice on who to get one from?

And contact details please :D

Try these.........

Allisport:
http://www.allisport.com/index.php?lang=en

Or Safari:
http://www.safarisnorkel.com/intercooler/intercooler_product.htm

In the case of Safari you'll probably have to contact one of their dealers in Aus and get one imported. They have a dealer in the UK but when I spoke to them (a couple of years ago now) they only imported the snorkels.
I was quoted $2238.00Aus for the 1HD-FT kit with $895.00Aus delivery from a company called Cooma diesel back in 2009. There would probably be VAT and import duty to pay in addition.

cheaper alternative is to make your own.

Get the bits off ebay. Just make sure your bends are as smooth as possible.

My 2 cents, Allisport, got theirs on my 80 and its been trouble free for going on 2 years now, and approx 10 thou miles.
You can get it as a fit yourself kit, or you can pay them to fit, mine cost £700.00 parts and labour.

I'd hang fire with the exhaust system if I were you. Apparently there are changes to the MOT this year which will mean a test faliure if a cat has been removed from a vehicle that had one from new. The 24v 80's had one.

Julian, any impressions after the installation? Did they change fuel pump settings? Do you run a 3" exhaust? :)

no they don't only petrols maybe a 100 but not a 80

The petrol 80's have a 3 way cat. The diesels have an oxidation cat, whatever that is.

Oxidation cat :? Looks like 3 silencers to me, how is the MOT guy going to tell if its an "oxidation cat" or a silencer?

Your guess is as good as mine. Toyota markings? OE part No.s?? I would imagine if it has now become 'illegal' to remove a cat and enforceable by law then anyone licenced/qualified to do an MOT will have been briefed on how to identify one.

Yes, a great improvement in torque, 5th gear now pulls like 3rd used to before the inter cooler was fitted.
Before the conversion to the inter cooler I had a Faux free flow stainless steel exhaust from the turbo back fitted, its only .5 inch oversize from standard and I am tempted to go to a larger bore, and just for those who are interested my 80 had no cat fitted although a few people I have spoken to seem to think it should have one, ( I should probably ask my local friendly Toyota parts man before her next mot ;) ).
And yes the Pump was fettled to take advantage of the cooler charge air and assumed lower EGT due to inter cooler and free flow exhaust.
All in all Andrew was a very knowledgeable and friendly gent over the whole affair and the welding is a sight to behold

Thanks for sharing. I bought my 80 from a friend and she has Safari Intercooler installed but without any other changes applied to fuel pump or else. Based on my experience and comparing with other 80 series around me - i find no difference resulted from the Safari cooler. Safari basically denied on providing specs for the fuel pump adjustments... Now i am into the dilemma whether to play Gandalf the Grey and take wild guesses on how to adjust the system or just buy another/ different intercooler...

The whole point of an intercooler is you can take advantage of the cooler intake charge and burn more fuel which on a diesel means more power and, unfortunately, more heat. If you fit an IC without adusting the fuelling power gains, if any, will be small. In fact, all intercoolers suffer boost loss due to the extra piping so, at the very least, you should up the boost to compensate. If you intend to try adjusting the pump and boost yourself I'd recommend fitting EGT and Boost gauges which will take out all the guesswork.

Yaro, you need to find a diesel pump specialist ;) The Safari intercooler set-up is regarded as the best available for the 80 series without going for a highly customised option. I doubt you'll get a better alternative

Thanks for the advice! :)
I doubt I can do this piece particularly myself, unless you (or someone else) explain it like to a 6 year old.. :) (or i can read it from somewhere)...

Andrew, my concern is this specialist would like to see some figures aiming the end result, i have less than great will to do multiple try/error attempts. I know Safari's reputation... :) What about Allisport? Their offer 'sounds' nice... :)

Yaro, the Safari kits don't come with any tuning info - you need a specialist to tune it. Ideally aim to get the boost raised to around 1 bar/14psi and then increase the fuelling as well to take advantage of all the extra air being pumped into the engine.

The reason why Safari or any of the other manufacturer don't provide any tuning info is because it all depends on the initial state of tune of the engine, which can vary considerably.

The Safari kit is by far the prettiest, but when compared to the Denco charge cooler, All American kit and Allisport kits, I have always managed to squeeze more out of the Allisport intercoolers - the key issue is that Andrew at Allisport uses a much more efficient core.

Thank you, Julian. As far as i know the standard (default) boost is aroud 0.7 bar, correct? What if i keep the boost standard?

Yaro, as mentioned earlier if you keep the fuelling and therefore boost levels standard then you will not see any gains from the intercooler.
