me thinks me might need a service manual...

For the front I think you can trolley jack the front diff but you'll bend the underbody tray if you dont remove it. I just use the bottle jack from the boot on the chassis and get axle stands on the chassis as close as possible to the wheel, before the chassis starts to slope.

On the back, trolley jack the diff and axle stands on the axle.
 
Doing the front and this is where I was going so far. Maybe even chuck in a bit of wood to spread the load slightly so I can get the jack and stand in together. Or maybe just as you've suggested then once I've got a stand in move the trolley to under the front diff just in case it needs catching.

I'll make a post of where I end up (probably A&E) and the rest of the front pad & disc change... and I'll keep it shorter than the utter madness that was the draw unit!!!
