[OT] Importing truck from NZ

A friend is moving back from the UK from NZ and is thinking about
bringing back his new Mitsubushi pickup.
Do you know what the finance side of things is?
Isn't it something along the lines of value + import tax + vat, with
the import tax being based on tax tables at Customs and Excise?
Also, don't they have to get tested?
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Julian,
You are about right with the taxes etc. They also need to be
worked on prior to testing, the speedo has to be converted, the rear
fog needs fitting etc.
Regards, Clive.

We looked into this a couple of years ago. There is a booklet (very boring to read) that explains everything. Customs and Excise will send it to you. I think their phone number is 0845 0109000, that might not be the right number, but they'll be able to give you the right number if it isn't.
But, yes I think you are right on what you've said.
It has to be inspected which is not an MOT. Then an MOT.
You have to apply for a registration doc.
You pay import duties plus VAT.
It's all pretty easy.
Cheers,
Matt

If he has owned the truck overseas for 6 months and has lived overseas for
over a year then he can bring it into the UK without paying any taxes.
He must hold onto the truck for over a year in the UK before he can sell
(without paying any taxes)
At least that was the situation when I brought mine back from the USA. The
local DVLC office (or Swansea) will have info and presume on web site too.
The truck will have to pass MOT testing and EU safety regd (beware
windscreen glass, headlights, blinkers etc.)
The hardest part was trying to get insurance b4 u could move off the dock. A
lot of insurance co's (computer systems) won't insure unless u have a UK
licence plate # (catch-22 can't get until go thru import docs (DVLC) and
they won't do it without insurance etc...) Found that Norwich Union would
give on chassis# and then change once u got your licence.
