Up to Manchester and back for family duties, almost all motorway, no hold-ups (at all, not one !!)

33mpg.

Thats at a steady 60mph, which, surprisingly, saw me in the middle lane most of the time on the way there, on the way back there were far less hgvs and vans.

The time was within 2 minutes of the gps estimate

Now bearing in mind the motorways are 70mph, and I was doing 60, I dont understand its maths, as I should have tken longe than it first estimated.

Truck ran luvverly, only small hiccup was a plastic window shield coming off, due to the excessive mph (I normally poodle at about 50mph) but I managed to stop in time and saved it for reaffixing.

Went to an area called Cheetham Hill, an interesting and exotic location, surprised it isnt mor epopular as a holiday destination.

33 is good.
Don't think I have hit 33, as I have had the slightly oversize tyres on, almost since I bought her, over 6 years ago.

Nothing much wrong with it, by returning good figures like that.

I seem to get a lower fuel consumption if I keep mine about an indicated 75mph, sat nav speed of about 65-68mph. This is at about 2800revs where it just seems to come on cam.

33mpg - now that is good. Is yours man or auto? If the latter, then even more impressive. :icon-cool:

I had student digs just off Cheetham Hill in the early '90s, haven't been back since; as you say a lovely place as I recall.

Its a 3.0td auto, running 33" tyres. Revs were around the 2000 +/- 200

Generally I get about 24mpg mixed, but I reckon the long run at low speed with no stop/start is the key to the better mpg.

For accuracy, I brimmed the tank, zeroed the mileage, did the journey, brimmed the tank again and then worked out exact gallons used.

Tim - I cant remember the last time I drove at 75mph......I am genuinely slow and steady, but mainly slow.

Pete

Please seer my sad fuel log for last year. Best average for a tank was 27mpg towing a small camping trailer so getting 33mpg is possible.
Below figures are for a sw90 auto 1996.

Ive only had my LC90 Colorado just under a month, but i did the same, i brimmed it when i bought it, and i filled it up again last nite (payday). Most of my driving is 50mph roads but i also do some around town driving at weekends, but i returned a combined fuel consumption of 25.7mpg which i was quite pleased about as i thought it would be alot less than that with it being such a big truck. My average on my old car (lexus is200se petrol) was between 28-32mpg combined so realy, these LC's aint too bad i dont think

That's an indicated 75mph, my speedo is nearly 11% out, the original tyres were 215-80X16, now very slightly smaller 225-75s. I find It'll change into top at a lower speed now which helps. I was going to put larger tyres on but my wheels are only 6j with not much offset, car is a Colorado FX auto and I do a lot of towing with it so want the power rather than speed.

When I drove mine home from Andy Cook in Aberdeen it was 460 odd miles and I got 22 and a tad running 265/75/16 tyres, not got a clue if this is good or bad

Speed has little to do with consumption i reckon , at tickover revs your running at your most efficient and what gear your in or what speed you are traveling at really doesn't matter . Motorways give better mpg because you aren't stopping and starting (unless you use the M6) and accelerating through the gears . Tickover speed in top gear might differ about 20mph while comparing almost identical trucks if one has 31" tyres and the other 33" .

Each vehicle will have it's own sweet spot for economy. It's a balancing act between engine speed, gearing, transmission losses and aerodynamic drag. There's some serious number crunching involved.

Look up "brake specific fuel consumption". But don't blame me if your brain starts leaking out of your ears :laughing-rolling:

20mph is a little ambitious, Shayne. Assuming 60mph on 31s, the same setup on 33s would be approx 4mph faster.

Must have been more than 22.
I would double check them there figures.

On a good run of that distance, I would have expected at least "high twenties" maybe even a 30 mpg.

Depends on how long those miles took. The KZ-engined 90s can get rather thirsty if you start pushing them.

I feel I have to disagree.
Speed after say 45 mph, does increase fuel consumption
I say that, because at 41 mph, the overdrive kicks in, and revs take a substantial drop.

If I was able to drive 45 mph, constant, I believe that would give very good fuel figures.
The windage just gives our trucks a poor figure, as they are not particularly aerodynamic, now are they.

However, it is just impracticable to drive hour after hour at just 45 mph, and this is why I strongly feel that around 50mph to 55 mph is the efficient speed for these trucks.

At 55 mph I think my engine is turning over at around 1600 rpm, which also happens to be the start of the torque band.

Agree with you hear! I find just as it ticks into top gear (around 60mph) it can labour the engine a bit, especially when going up a slight hill and so you need to push on a little more. I think at 70mph she cruises easily, but even so I find at 80mph she can sit there all day happily. MPG difference from 60mph to 80mph is pretty much the same, it's when you're pushing 100mph that your fuel economy suffers. I don't often calculate MPG but I get a good 400-450 miles from a brimmed tank to when the reserve light starts flickering on motorway runs.

The drag on a vehicle increases proportionally to the square of the speed. Therefor the drag at 80mph is almost twice that at 60 (6400 v 3600), irrespective of the shape of the vehicle. As has been said before, it may be that a vehicle is more efficient at a given speed due to gearing or rpm etc which offsets the increase in drag.

I sat at 70/75 for most of my trip back from Scotland

I've got around a 300 mile drive ahead of me tomorrow so should be able to report back with sadly shocking mpg figures with 285/75 coopers , intercooler , 3" exhaust , fuel pump turned up , turbo boosting at god only knows what psi and a K&N filter , besides which i always have the window open which is not gonna help with drag at 70+
