Asking for a friend (honest!) - anybody had a problem with the speedo drive leaking oil? O-ring renewed and started to leak again soon after.

The level bung is out because it was being topped up

There must be a seal inside the unit itself.

Depending on how certain you are of where the leak is, perhaps degrease and double check.

Scrub it with degreaser do a lap to dry things out and then throw flour on it to see exactly where the oil is coming from

When you say 'it soon leaked after' are we talking about a day later or a couple of weeks, if we are talking about a day then the internal seal of the cable may have gone bad, or the seal you fitted was the wrong one or got damaged during the install. If we are talking about a week or so there is a breather on the gearbox, if the pipe is blocked/kinked then the gearbox may be building pressure forcing the oil out.

You could remove the cable and land after cleaning let it 'hang', if the internal seal has failed then after about 20 minutes depending on temperature oil will drip from the cable itself, I have actually seen oil dripping from under the dashboard when a breather has been blocked and the oil is forced up the cable aided by the twisting motion.

Regards

Dave
