I was never comfortable using screwdriver for this job. Always felt there's too much force involved that is hard to control.
I do it this way. I run a thin rope or a wire from spring, crossing the side of the chassis and down to the floor.

I make a loop into which I can step.

With a little bit of attention to the body balance, you can easily control the spring with the force of your foot, stretch it just the needed amount, not more, and assemble/disassemble the tensioner.

It's a known, basic, widespread idea, but I still see many people fighting with screwdrivers doing this job, so I decided to photo and write down these lines.
