Who is doing what maintenance today?

While we are talking about keys its worth mentioning my own mistake of trying to improve remote distance by removing the battery and green board from my fob and cleaning it with methylated spirits . I've done that many a time with laptop boards without a problem but it seemed to kill my fob .
When i took it to the key shop they said i left the fob battery out too long so the key had to be reset . So if your changing the battery yourself do it quick .

This is not actually true, there is a method of programming the key back to the inside immobiliser. It involves a timed process of events, something like holding down the unlock button while removing the battery and then putting the battery back in. There's plenty information about these toyota fobs as they were used through out the 1990's range...
 
replaced 3 earth straps and added 2 extra ones. Replaced the upgraded alternator wiring. Serviced alternator and starter motor. Added 2 new tiny ring front lamps just under the bumper, looked at changing timing belt but forgot my max and laptop, got the cover off and that was about it, same story with glow plugs. Drained all diffs and gear/transfer box and refilled. front diff oil looks good but needs a new drain plug as it is leaking slightly. oil air and fuel filter change. Busy Busy day all in all. Sooooooo much easier now I have a lift though.
 
Replaced fuel pump and injectors .

Well that sounds a lot easier than it ended up being...

Actually I ended up taking the injection pump in and out 3 times. Over the last 2 weeks. At least am pretty fast now at that LOL. 8.5 hours the first time. Just over 2 hours on Monday which was the third time.

Would have been lost without some help from Julian V on the phone helping diagnose what I thought was catastrophe - running rough as heck, on 4 and smoking and shaking the engine like mad. He pointed me in the right direction over the phone. That happened the first time when I was several miles from home. Limped her back. Thank you for the advice, you know your stuff.

Second refit lasted all of 1 hour whilst sat outside mine on fast idle etc, then a whole half mile on the motorway before something let go and the most painful of clack sounds followed. Was running OK though so limped home on tick over, feeling sick, and a bit sad.

All for the sake of a £3 nut I had reused 2 times after having to encourage the old pump off with mr lumpy hammer "tapping" on it. Not the approved FSM method but all I had to hand - it was stuck on tight after 19 odd years. My theory is that the threads were letting go under load. (hangs head in shame for not realising sooner).

Once again the biggest Ta goes to Karl. Man's a star, patient and understanding and knows his stuff. Thanks mate, and for the encouragement.

And a thanks to JW for the the loan of the pump timing tool - you'd never set it right without the right tool.

So today she seems fine, although i think i have set the tick over a touch low. Of course Im totally paranoid at this stage about every blooming noise so found driving about made me feel anxious. Fingers crossed.

And in the midst of that my laptop logic board dies. So its been a reasonably stressful week.

New laptops here now (well new to me) and truck was running OK as of 2pm today.

Anyway I have learned a lot, and today she finally seems to be running right.
 
Replaced both front window seals, stripped the motors etc and greased it all up. Working much better now just need to sort the switch pack as contacts are a little scorched.
 
Put the 'ol girl in for her MOT and she sailed through - no advisories at all :thumbup:......on slight tangent, I've always found testers to be very positive about LCs :icon-cool:

Broke my key the other day, cracked and snapped around the screw. Went to Mr T, and he wanted only €170 for a new one, so I said, I think I'll run away very fast. Had a browse on the eBay, and found a chap selling these beauties for €6.50 incl p&p. Shell and blank key only, just pop in your transponder deely and away you go.

Well I'm no stranger to Mr T's high prices, but 170 quid for a key is stretching anyone's sense of humour :wtf:.

6.50 is much more like it! You could buy a box of 10 and break as many as you like at that price! :lol:

Sorted a cheap fix for the OE TVSS alarm after the siren died due to water ingress. Most parts for these are no longer available new. A new siren would probably have been well into the £100's anyway so a siren from a '99 Avensis was bagged on Ebay for £15. Not exactly the same as the old unit but there is some plug and play compatability with these systems even though they weren't actually generic. Different layout on the board inside but bone dry and like new and works fine when plugged in. Just got to replace the Ni Cad batt pack and job done. Not sure how water got into the old unit as it's bone dry in the inner wing cavity but sprayed the new one with corrosion block to be safe.
 
Removed and sealed the weather strip under the sliding windows, also the air vent behind plastic louvre and the rear brake light cluster.:pray:
Hopefully no more swimming pools in the rear quarter panels.

Replaced the window rubber runs and weather strips on the doors.
Windows now going up/down like they should.

Put some fresh Red Line into the transfer and gearbox.
Pricey :icon-eek: but works wonders on tired manual boxes.
 
Bought a metre of plastic tubing, it's amazing how much is used up wrapping around a heater hose :doh:, so went out and bought two metres, wrapped around aforementioned heater hose and Voila, I now have sparkly clean windscreen

Swapped to the 35's, bolted the bash guards on and loaded some gear into the boot :-) got some time off over Xmas so it's play time.

Not a bad idea that, got some washer hose in my tool box :think: washer bottle gets warm but can't hurt heating the hose too
 
Chas been telling people about that mod for ages. I think that you're the first person to follow suit. It works a treat and costs nowt. I can see steam coming off the windows in winter. I want to heat the washer bottle next.

I'm trying it first as it is, if it's not quite hot enough I'm going to wrap the coils in cooking foil to retain the heat bit more, thanks for the idea Chris :thumbup:, I remember you posting that a while ago.
