Who is doing what maintenance today?

Finally got round to fitting a light in the upper tailgate. I acquired an interior cabin light with the three way switch (modified with an LED panel) and cut a small rectangle out to fit it flush. Wired to the tailgate switch so it's only powered when the tailgate is lifted and doesn't come on when any other door is opened.

Nice one Chas!

I now realize that none of my interior lights are working except for the front light by the interior mirror, which is manually switched.

I don't know yet whether it's bulbs, door switches, or power supply... no time to look just now.:?

Swapped tyres over on the car, took the winters off (not that really needed them this winter!!) Put the normal ones back on.
Gave it a full valet too ready to photograph and put up for sale.

Edit.... this was the focus not the 80! That's not for sale!

I fitted one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Signal-12...ervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item2a376d6671 ( a while back) in the upper tailgate and find it gives a good light spread for loading unloading.
Spent this afternoon underneath doing some prep ready for fitting new shocks and ARB bushes. One of the rear upper shock mounting plate bolts was a right b***h and rounded off. Took a while but finally got it out with some heat and half turn at a time so only got one shock and the ARB/axle mounts done. Laying on your back in the p*****g rain makes every job twice as painful!.

First bit of maintenance on the 80 today.

I dived in to find out what was wrong with the steering and why it was so vague with heaps of play. Checked the steering arms under load with the tyres on the ground and all was well. Jacked up the front end and checked all the steering linkage etc and all was well. Removed the air box and battery tray to reveal the steering box.

It was the only part covered in about 3mm of grease and dirt. Where from I have no idea but on going through this procedure (http://www.landcruiserclub.net/foru...ing-80-series-steering-box?highlight=steering) i did notice a bit of steering fluid come out the adjuster screw so assume it may be from here in the past.

Put it all back together and took her for a drive...all fixed. I will get the wheels checked over at some pint to make sure they are correct.

Removed the rear seats and looked at the fuel sender which is buggered and needs replacing. Just the sender unit which you can get separately from Toyota Then the radio as it did not have great reception and boy what a bodge job there.

I did what i can to tidy it all up and cut away what was not needed as at some point i will remove the lot and install a nice double din with al the bells and whistles.

Thats about it today. tomorrow the mother and law lands so its off to the airport and out for lunch so I might just manage to give her a wash.

Bought a sooper dooper Pioneer double din unit with a 300w sub woofer for the 80, it's got SatNav (useless compared to the Garmin DEZL) Bluetooth hands free phone facility (not as good as the Parrot though)
but the sound quality is much better then the Alpine it replaced, the CB will have to be relocated somewhere else . . . eventually

and here's the local car radio shop man swapping them over.

 Need to get a bit of trim to cover those gaps.
Don't know why my pictures are appearing so big. this doesn't usually happen.

Finally got round to fitting a blue sea systems fuse box and a stebel nautilus horn into the wing (behind the side light)...

Will definitely get people's attention now (previous horn just let out a wet fart....)

Had a plan today and get 4 jobs done on this today:-

IMG_0642_zps53ea8d69.jpg

1, to add a centre diff lock switch to the dash, as it had not had one factory fitted.
2, to replace the alternator as it looked old and original and I had a nearly new one spare.
3, to re instate the air con pump as it was supplied in a bag with the Truck.
4, to install a new condenser so I could have reliable air con.

There has been ongoing work since I got it a couple of weeks ago, and still a lot to do so far I have changed axle oils, changed the wheels and tyres ( so they all matched) , the brake pads were very thin so I swapped them for some slightly thicker ones for now.
Anyway cracked on after work this morning:-

Old alternator out

Newer alternator in with new belts.

Air con pump installed, this is one supplied new a couple of years ago I have been saving.

Then I set to to get a centre diff lock switch installed, there had been a factory blanking cover on here.
IMG_0651_zps332f272c.jpg

you have to install the appropriate piece of loom as well
IMG_0652_zps96cae72a.jpg

now doesn't that look better?

And it all works,

Anyway I ran out of time so I didn't get the condenser changed.
With this Cruiser, which I really like to drive ( even if it is a pedal and stick arrangement) it is my intention to get every single gizmo working as I see some miles being travelled this summer, therefore the air con is getting priority.

I've installed TWO Stebel Nautilus horns under the bonnet on a separate button to the main horn. I have to be a bit circumspect near the oldies in case of heart attacks though.
I also have a 16" air horn as the main one, sound them both together and it sounds like WW3 has broken out.

I've got my eye on one of these for the bike. There's space in the front fairing to just about fit one in. The OE offering on most bikes these days is pityfull and even embarrassing! A friend used to have one on his bike when he was still riding, it surprised people!!

Checked the oil level today, same place as when it was last changed.
Checked the coolant, still full.
Checked under for leaks, no leaks.
Checked the front disk pads, still meaty.
Checked the tyre pressures, still 38lbs all round.

Checked the windscreen wash, topped it up.

I like maintenance on the 80...:icon-biggrin:

Nice work Andy. Looks like a decent truck. Gotta be worth £15k-£16k at least. With the right advert of course. What with it being a rare 24v manual and all.

Cup holder on order by the way. Since you showed me that my life hasn't been complete. Glad the AC pump fitted. I couldn't believe how many variants there are. The tops are all different.

I can't believe that cup holder provoked a reaction Chris :laughing-rolling:.
Yes different pump straight on. the original pump was probably ok as it was free to turn but a 2 year old one is better. Gonna re O ring all the jioints and put a new condenser on so we should be good to go.

Andy

Mr T. Better hold on to your wallet though.
