Nice work Mike.

Years ago when building engines for the running surfaces crank/cam bearings and so forth I uses to coat them with Graphogen during assembly (I think that is spelt right?), I also used to paint the inside of the block with red floor paint, it would smooth the inner surfaces so under race conditions the oil would not only return to the sump quicker but also pick up less heat, The outside I gave up with the yellow block and red cylinder heads and copied an engine building company that is still in Gants Hill, the engine builder at the time IIRC was a guy called 'Eddie', he chose the bright Green Hammerite for block and heads, for some reason it just looked so right on an engine and made leaks easier to find.

For engineering work I used to use a company called Gosnays on the Eastern Avenue, I don't know if they are still there but, you name it and they had it when it came equipment, and they never let me down.

Dave

Waiting on a few bits to arrive so started on the head.
The seats are in good nick so new valves and a lap will suffice.

Room for a bit of porting here.
Maybe next time..

All the exhaust side are like this. Inlet side are fine.
Final wash. Yes, that's a leaf blower..

All set for installing the new valves and springs etc.

Looking go CG.

A little tip, I used to wrap a piece of masking tape around the top of the valve stems and then grease the tape before pushing through the valve stem rubbers, this removes the chance of nicking one or more of the stem rubbers.

Fitting the rear crank seal.

38478.jpg

Appears Toyota changed the design of the replacement seal. The seal lips sit in a different location, maybe to avoid sitting in the slight groove caused by a couple 100 thousand miles of wear.

Toyota provides this rather convenient seal kit.

Going in front of a manual gearbox I guess seeing the spigot bearing?

This is the timing gear case. Houses the oil pump which can be seen in the picture.
IMG_20220225_125221.jpg

It's damaged where the lower dowel locates.
While the oil pump measures in spec there are a few score marks. It could be reused, but, well, you can't beat new. :)

Well done, reminds me of my build over 11 years ago now.
Another vote from me for Graphogen during the rebuild too.

thanks higgy. not out of my 80, that engine is still running stronger than god..
it might go in a long term future project, or, if dave2000 offers me enough cash, (including shipping), it can go on a pallet.. :D.
