Hi folks, I've had Hilux pickups for years, still run a couple of them but now I fancy a 1980's LWB straight 6 diesel. Can someone tell me the difference between the FJ and HJ and points to look out for?
Much appreciated, Steve
The HJ is the diesel, FJ is petrol (and vanishingly rare in the UK).
There are two models of HJ, the 60 which is normally aspirated and the 61 which has a turbo. Aside from that the only significant model differences are in the headlights - rectangular twins or round singles.
The main thing to watch out for is body rust which affects them all to a greater or lesser degree.
Great motors, if you don't feel a great need to rush everywhere, they will burn almost anything and, if the rust is dealt with properly, outlast human civilisation.
Any you look at will have a torn driver's seat base.
................. many thanks Nick, really helpful, I'm looking forward to getting to grips with. It's the HJ I'm after. Anyone selling please send PM. Will keep you posted.
Many thanks.
