I had one just like it in the late 80’s. A colleague, who worked out in the sticks at the time’ had a S3 SWB LR which they eventually scrapped and replaced with a Maetro with LSD rear diff and what looked like mud tyres on the back. He said it was rubbish.

Aparently the diesel was developed by Perkins and won awards. Here endeth my knowledge on the subject.
