80 series gullwings rear windows

Ok, we seem to be getting somewhere. Two further drawing tweaks on the door but got the frame perfect on version 3 [emoji3][emoji3][emoji28]

First door punched from ally and mocked up

Got the frame fitted, I've taken the window out so many times I can do it in a couple of minutes now and put the frame back even quicker.

Door version 4 being punched…

Got the hinge strip welded onto the frame and the hinges and door fitted. Now for the window rubber.

Drop the rear corner in then the front

Pull the rope around the rubber on the inside and give it a push and it's in in about 5 minutes.

I made the catches depress on the seal to save any wear or rattling.

Got the dust seal fitted round the edge and boy does it stick like…well, you know.

Good size aperture.

And sitting just back from flush with the truck body. Just as I wanted it.

As you may have noticed it is in Aircraft finish, that's cos I've got to fashion some brackets for the gas strut and get them welded on. Then… off to the paint shop, or maybe wet spray in my garage for the first one as I have some Acid Etch primer.

Pretty pleased with them so far am I. [emoji6][emoji3][emoji3]

As some of you have the sliding windows, I will look into a solution for the vent moulding to hopefully save on replacement costs. A window rubber is essential though, unless someone wants to send me a window frame to see if I can make a frame to fit without a rubber…now there's a thought…anyone?

Moi? Hint? Well…err, could be, I suppose. Got any laying about perchance?

I may be able to find you one or a pair.

very expensive though. Could cost you a pair of the finished project :icon-wink:

Drop me a pm and ill sort it. Don't know when I'm next getting bits ready though. May be able to do one eve

They look the Mutts. Truly. But in relation to the production process for cutting out the flaps, honestly I felt like I'd gone back to 1873. A laser CNC would have cut all of those (10 sides) in the time taken to do one. That really is pre-historic. That might well be something to do with the cost there. I did wonder what you meant when you said punched. My local place does manhole covers on a CNC plasma out of 40mm plate. It must do a dozen in that time. It's staggering.

But as I said, they look the doo dahs,

They are looking really good and if costs can be reduced with a different frame and a vent mod I'm back and very interested.

Like I said Chris, I'm going to look into laser cutting. Having got this far with one company, I've needed to follow it through to this stage as they bought material in to do it. Laser cutting wasn't something I had considered until recently when I heard of a couple of local companies that do it. There is also water jet cutting but I have yet to find someone locally who does it. Thing is with these things, you go with who you know to start with, then various other solutions manifest themselves and it evolves. As I said, this isn't my main line of business so there's a bit of a learning curve.

Chas, (and others with sliding windows) bear with me. It might take me a while to come up with the best solution but things are happening to help this along. If I can do what I think I can then there should be no rubber or moulding to buy or mod but I need to look into it as I don't have sliding windows.

I'll get there, even if it's by prehistoric methods to start with.

Good man.

Yep, this would be great as I have the sliding rear windows as well. Cheers

I can see the sliding windows are going to be perhaps more popular seeing as these were the norm for UK models.

Thought i was going to struggle finding fixed glass to replace my sliders, dont think it'll be a problem now...

Good effort btw starcruiser.

Oh no Sir, fixed glass is so passé. Try these super new Gullwing doors for size, they're sure to make your truck even more lovely!![emoji6][emoji4][emoji4][emoji4][emoji6]
