Car sounds like shrieking demons

Hi,
I’m wondering if anyone can help me diagnose the problem.

this is what the car sounds like whether morning or evening:

it does not matter whether the engine is hot or cold. I’ve taken it to mechanics who say it’s the belt, then they check the belt and say it’s fine.

another says it’s a leak of some sort. The noise only appears around 800-900 rpms.

Any help or nudge in a direction is appreciated.

Sounds a bit like the AC idler pulley or some other dry bearing. Hard to tell as it's a short clip but it's almost a chirrup.

I didn’t do a long clip because it literally sounds like that until revs change to either over 900 or below 800.

chirrup! That’s it. I’ve been so annoyed by it that the only way I could describe it was as demons shrieking. Heh.

Thank you. It is a 2006, diesel. 3.0 1KD. So if it is one of the pulleys, do I just need to buy a new one or is there something that I should look at first in terms of repairs ?

If it is and idler the you need to diagnose witch one it is before you go buying, like I say thats if it's and idler, if your not sure, take it to a mech that know what there doing as it sounds like you've taken it to the wrong ones so far.

Best of luck.

Does the engine shake when it is making this noise , it could do that kind of noise with the injectors that are way past their life span and you could end up with very bad engine damage like a cracked piston .

Hi Tony,

How are you?

No the engine does not shake. It just makes that awful noise and I have no idea where its coming from.

On that note, I got in touch with the place you recommended to buy injectors directly, they'll tell me tomorrow if they have them in stock. The specialist is charging the same price for reconditioned ones that I would have to pay for new ones. I am just thinking of doing the injectors myself. Does not seem that complicated.

If you do the injectors yourself watch as many youtube videos that you can on fitting injectors and egr clean and mods on the 1KD-FTV engine , you will need injector fitting kits ,like the 5 leakoff washers and best get new pipes as well and new injector seals for the rocker cover where the injector pipes conect the injectors, make sure you have a good low nm torque wrench as its very important you use the right torque on the parts , you will need a 17mm crowfoot socket if your good with working on engines it will help , but cleanliness and none contamination of the injectors , common fuel rail , and fuel lines are of the upmost importance , as is cleaning of the injector ports before putting in the new injectors also make sure you have new aluminium injector washers when you fit the new injectors , you will need tecstream to install the new codes the injectors come with also , and while you are at the point after removing the intercooler it is best clean out the EGR valve and entry of the inlet manifold also fit a blanking plate with a 7mm hole at the engine side of the egr cooler and you will have killed two birds with one stone coz your engine will run so much better with the egr clean and mod done and with the new injectors , I am sure people on here that have replaced their injectors or injector washers can give you plenty tips and advice .

Hi Nico I forgot to add if you do the injector change your self or get a garage to do it check that if there has been any blow by past the O ring of the injector if the injector washer has eroded away and let the combustion past and melted the O ring of the injector and letting carbon into the oil and if it has you will need to clean the oil pickup strainer in the small bottom sump of the engine or the engine will get starved of oil and could die . its a good policy to always check the oil pickup strainer whenever you do a oil change anyway by looking up the oil drain hole with a torch when the oil has drained out of the sump as its a good tell tale sign if the injector washer/s are leaking as is blue smoke coming out of the exhaust for a few seconds at startup .

Thank you Tony.

I recently changed oil and filter but wasn't aware of this at all. I don't have blue smoke on startup but I am thinking before I even begin with the injectors I might drop the oil and check the oil pickup strainer.

I am a novice at this but gotta start somewhere. I watched a ton of youtube videos on replacing the injectors and also have the guide from Baileys. It does not look all that complicated but who knows. Thanks for the recommendation on leakoff washers and pipes. As soon as the guys get back to me with regards to whether they have the injectors or not I'll ask them to add the rest of the stuff to the order as well.

When you do you oil change and the oil has stopped draining (it will take a while for it to stop dripping) look up the drain hole and about 25mm above the drain hole is a wire-mesh strainer that the oil is sucked up through before it goes to the oil filter , the mesh should look clear without black carbon on it , they may be a couple of tiny metallic bits or tiny gasket bits on it from manufacture , but what you are looking for is BLACK CARBON sludge that can cover the strainer if the injector washer seals are leaking and if that is the case you need to replace the injector washer seals asap and remove the small sump (as there are a double sump design ) and clean the strainer asap before it starves the engine of oil and kills the engine .

It's actually easy to remove the small sump, so I would suggest you do this first. If the the strainer is blocked, then I would do the injector washers.

Bit fiddly to do the injector washers, but there are a few guides out there. Having taken the injectors out twice now on mine, I recon I could do this in about 3hrs now.... Maybe quicker.

Just to add, not sure how it's been concluded its the injectors from that short clip...

Also, either I'm not looking well enough or the question hasn't been asked, what's the KM's traveled on your 120?

Hi jibberjabber,

It has done 196200 miles so far. So well past due for a comprehensive service including injectors and other things mentioned in this post. It has been regularly serviced by Toyota up until 180k miles. After that local garage and now by me. I do not see a record with Toyota of injector replacement.

Hi Tony,

The part about the injectors is just mentioned because TonyCy11 was helping me find new injectors that I want to get changed anyway since the car has 196k miles on it. Not 100% certain the noise is from the injectors, it could be any number of things as far as the posts in this thread suggest. I am thinking I have to change the injectors anyway so might as well do the rest of the cleaning/changes required.

Ah OK, yes it may make sense to change them anyway.

Regarding the squealing, I'd also check the aircon and the fast heating system clutches as these are know issues

Ha, yes we do use KMs in Argentina. I am currently in Scotland. I should change the flag, I thought it was the flag of the country you were from when picking it. :)
