Hi All I want to add a second battery to my LC - a UK made FJ80 petrol 4.5.
I need to move the water res and bolt in a new tray... but what's the
cheapest way to do this ?, anyone have a tray or conversion kit for sale ?
If not where should I go to get the parts ?... any breakers specialise in
LC's ?
Cheers
Adrian

Hi Jon,
I guess all in all the BEBs tage around 4 hrs to do.
The longest part is removing the pan and then cleaning the old seal from th=3D
e block and pan.
To remove the pan I wedged one corner and then pried it off - it did bend u=3D
p the corner a bit, but was easy to straighten.
You can get a knife or scaper and then wedge it in and knock it around cutt=3D
ing the seal, but with the axle, etc in the way you don't have much space t=3D
o swing the hammer.
I used a sharp knife to slice off as much as possible of the old seal and t=3D
hen used a wire brush on a drill to clear off the rest. Afterwards I clean=3D
ed the whole thing in the parts cleaner to clean off any remaining crap.
You could do it without jacking the car up, but jacking it helps because yo=3D
u need to slide in and out under the axle several times - I have the axle o=3D
n axle stands - in hindsight I would jack the body up onto axle stands to g=3D
ive more space between the axle and the pan.
The bolts have a star/splined head with 12 points - you could order the SST=3D
, however I bought a set of standard Draper sockets that acts on the corner=3D
s of bolts as opposed to the flats like more 'modern' sockets that work on =3D
the flat sides - these sockets are the required star shape and have done th=3D
e job.
There aren't any tabs on the bolts - you can either tighten them to 27ft lb=3D
s and then turn another 180 degrees or just tighten to 68ft lbs (depending =3D
on the manual you use).
You should check the bolt lengths to see if they have stretched before re-u=3D
sing - I re-used mine this time around since they were in spec, but next ti=3D
me would probably replace them - it provides more confidence when torquing =3D
up.
As for turning the engine over, it easier with the injectors out, but could=3D
be done with them still in - I have an old torque wrench that I use as a s=3D
tandard socket wrench - the extra length gives more leverage and control.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Julian =3D

Thanks to Jon from Tring for info. on swb 4.2. I have since found out
that Yoyota did put a 4.2 turbo in a swb and called it a hdj73.
Sounds like it would be terrific off-road with the power and short
overhangs.Ayone know where I could get one? Thanks to Julian for
keeping us posted on his major service, I for one am finding it very
interesting. Keep it up.
SNIP
Kirk, pleased that between us we could help, its why Julian got us
all together after all. Its interesting that you found out that they
put the 4.2 turbo in the SWB so I think we would all like to know
which version they used - the 12 or 24valve model, its seems unusual.
As for getting hold of one. Keep Googling for dispersal sales etc.
thoughout Europe. I can't see you would get a RHD one but possible to
get LHD from an aid agency dispersal where they are working in the
Balkans from Romania down to Turkey. Also look for UN dispersals from
Kosovo ( known as 'UNMIK'). Also input the names of familiar
charities etc with the phrase surplus vehicle dispersal and see what
comes up. Some charities retrieve their vehicles to European depots
before disposing of them. The Red Cross (ICRC) also hold a lot of
Toys and have a massive depot in Belgrade, don't forget they may be
listed under 'red crystal' now.
Maarten at AAI is always on the look-out for, and sells, odd models
like this and he may be worth a call. He comes to me for help with
anything he hears of in the Balkans. Last time it was single cab
dropside pick-up 70's in desert camo !
As for finding out more about the variants - and this may interest
Phil and his 70 series too - look first at ....
http://rustybrain.com/cruisers/faq.txt
This is a legendary history of the marque and runs to about 350k.
It was later updated as ....
http://www.cruiserfaq.com/00-01.html
But I am told that it is worth reading and comparing the two versions
side by side, though I don't know what the variation between them is. HTH

Hi Guys
I was just wondering if anyone knows what the headlight relay in the black
box on the passenger side in the engine bay would be capable of
withstanding.
Could you connect spots to this relay or would that over power it or blow
it.

Hi guys
I would like to know where to get my hands on a stretchy cargo net to hold
stuff in the boot of the cruiser.
I tried Machinemart but the gaps in the netting are 6 inches which are too
large, also they want =A318 just for delivery.
I am after a net that can be stretchy and have small holes say about 2
inches square, any ideas.
thanks

John,
That relay or two relays (in case of dim/dip setup) are hardly good
enough for OEM headlamps.
Haven't you had problems with the lights in the past because of the
relay getting hot and failing?
You'll need a separate power relay for the spots, rated at least 40A.
