[ELCO Digest]

Hi Al,
Maybe I should clarify that, like all indirect injection engines, when
you work them hard or turbo them aggressively they are very prone to
cylinder head failures. A friend went through two heads and 1 engine
rebuild with a properly setup turboed TD42. I told him to get a factory
turbo (direct injection) cruiser and he could not kill it. A friend ran
a matched pain in a tunnel boat one TD42T and one 1HD-T both set up the
same and three to four engine blowups later he found a second 1HD-T to
replace the nissan. The head eating mainly relates when turboed as in NZ
and Australia people seem to think by hanging a turbo on a patrol they
can have a landcruiser for a lot less money and it does not work that way.
Cheers,
Craig.

Thanks Julian,
I was wrong, sorry, you sent me that for Tuesday 2nd. Hostonce
deleted that sent on the 1st. I have spoken to them as they left a
trace of it in their new spam catcher software. I naturally asked
them why they did it when I get one from the same address every day.
Though that has not stopped them bouncing them back to you. No
answer so far, so I would be grateful if you could send it again please.
Not got one for today (Thursday) yet @ 9.45 pm, but I guess there is
still time !
Cheers

Hi Jon,
I'll keep a close eye on future bounces and will send them through

aerial strip Julian.
Mine has awful reception and doesn't fully retract so its time to swop out
If its easy ..........

Subject: [ELCO] Replacing 80 series aerial insert
From: Julian Voelcker <[Email address removed]>
Reply-To: [Email address removed]
Hi,
Has anyone here replaced the aerial on their 80 with a new insert?
The ones I have done in the past had the aerial and then the plastic
tail, but the replacement I have is just the aerial with a screw thread
on the bottom.
I'm assuming I still have to go to the painful contortions to remove
the main aerial unit and then strip it to replace the aerial?

I too replaced a shaft, giving a purely manual aerial (until I drove
into some string stretched across the drive and broke it again)
buy too, which must be attached to the shaft and then fed into the motor
bit at the bottom of the hole. I'd be fascinated to learn how to do
this if you succeed...

Repack with grease, not oil. Remember these are wheel bearings and need a very high viscosity compound to survive so check your bearings again. Make sure the dust seal and the sealing surface are absolutely dry when you install them otherwise you will attract dust and other debris that will dammage the seal and no need to chrome plate this surface unless you have very deep pockets, just give her a good rub as you did with emery. Just make sure you finish with a very fine grit.
Cheers,
mcb

Subject: [ELCO] [ADMIN] Possible Salisbury Plain trip - 25th March 2007
From: Julian Voelcker <[Email address removed]>
Reply-To: [Email address removed]
Hi,
I'm toying with the idea of organising another Salisbury Plain trip on
the Sunday 25th March.
I need to check with the MOD and the Bustard first, but will do that
this week.
The trip is long overdue, however all being well I'll be leaving for
Morocco the following Saturday and it will give me a good chance to
shake down the car, however if I'm running out of time to get
organised I may need to drop out at the last minute and leave someone
else in charge of organising things on the day.
So, please could you reply to this message if you are interested in
coming along.
Also, please could you let me know if....
(a) you are willing to lead a group of around 5 other cars around. I
have a number of routes pre plotted that I can hand out, although some
sort of Satnav system will help (all the routes I have are plotted on
Memory Map)
(b) you are willing to take over the organising on the day - mainly
just ticking off names on lists, making sure people get into the right
groups and then making sure that lunch is paid for.
As with the last trips the main emphasis is a friendly family day out
to get people together and put faces to names.
None of the tracks around the plain can be classified as challenging,
but if the rain keeps up there will likely be a fair bit of mud around.
For those that haven't been before we try to meet up down on the plain
around 8.30am, spend the morning driving the local tracks and then
retire to Bustard inn for lunch and then afterwards you can either stay
at the pub and admire each others cars or take off again for some more
fun and frolics in the mud.
On the costs front the lunch is generally around =A38-9 per head and then
I try to take donations for the organisation of the day (around =A310 per
vehicle), with the funds paying for the group leader's lunches and then
the remaining going to a local charity.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi,
I have noticed a number of people joining the list in the last couple
of weeks.
When you have a moment, please take the time to post a brief intro
message to the list, it is always nice to know who is out there.
Also, before you post, please take a moment to read the list rules at
http://www.landcruisers.info/lists/list_rules.html - they are pretty
straight forward and adhering to them just makes life easier for the
rest of us.
Thanks.
Happy Posting!

Hi William
I already did change the turbo :)
as I posted yesterday I'll keep the car whatever it might cost me and the
near plan is to drive down to Bulgaria on a
holyday and there to repair the rest!!!!!!!! I have already contacted Toyota
at the resort I used to stay and they are prepared to take the beauty and
fix it. By the way the hour labour there is 10?, but the cost for the spare
parts is like here...
Little bit scared but now in Bulgaria you can find more Cruisers than in
Norway -hehehehe( and many other cars like Ferrari,
Lamborghini and stuff like that you seldom see anywhere else. But the
ex-communists are now-capitalists and despite the short live they live
today(too much order killings) they live it GOOD!!!!
cheers
Lubo

Hi Phil
is that a price for original Toyota SS exhaust?
rgrds
Lubo
Hi there Lubo, The price quoted was for the standard Mild steel exhaust!
That was through a exhaust fitting centre! I know the guy in there and they
get a good discount from Toyota OEM parts. That was the cost supplied to
them with their 40% discount. The guy in the exhaust fitting place said if
it was anyone else he would add 60% to the cost of the Toyota part and sell
it to joe public for ?1262.40 Fitted.
Milners have called today and said that they cannot supply an exhaust for
the 4.5 petrol varient. Main Dealer only!!!
So I have emailed about the top 15 SS Exhaust makers today and asked if
they make the parts off the shelf. If not why not and what they are going to
do to help us out.
I have taken my 4.5 to the place in sheffield ASCAR and Powerflow in
Leamington for a quote today. I will update asap when they give me a price.
You can get the system cheaper if you opt for a side exit exhaust just under
the side steps as it cuts down on the construction. But if you want a copy
part then it looks like its going to be ?750+
On a totally different subject - anyone know if Procomp do a suspension
system for the 4.5 80 series. Either replacement or 2-3" lift??
Thanks in advance to all

Hi Lubo,
I don't think that Toyota ever supplied a SS exhaust.

Hi Jon,
I guess all in all the BEBs tage around 4 hrs to do.
The longest part is removing the pan and then cleaning the old seal from th=3D
e block and pan.
To remove the pan I wedged one corner and then pried it off - it did bend u=3D
p the corner a bit, but was easy to straighten.
You can get a knife or scaper and then wedge it in and knock it around cutt=3D
ing the seal, but with the axle, etc in the way you don't have much space t=3D
o swing the hammer.
I used a sharp knife to slice off as much as possible of the old seal and t=3D
hen used a wire brush on a drill to clear off the rest. Afterwards I clean=3D
ed the whole thing in the parts cleaner to clean off any remaining crap.
You could do it without jacking the car up, but jacking it helps because yo=3D
u need to slide in and out under the axle several times - I have the axle o=3D
n axle stands - in hindsight I would jack the body up onto axle stands to g=3D
ive more space between the axle and the pan.
The bolts have a star/splined head with 12 points - you could order the SST=3D
, however I bought a set of standard Draper sockets that acts on the corner=3D
s of bolts as opposed to the flats like more 'modern' sockets that work on =3D
the flat sides - these sockets are the required star shape and have done th=3D
e job.
There aren't any tabs on the bolts - you can either tighten them to 27ft lb=3D
s and then turn another 180 degrees or just tighten to 68ft lbs (depending =3D
on the manual you use).
You should check the bolt lengths to see if they have stretched before re-u=3D
sing - I re-used mine this time around since they were in spec, but next ti=3D
me would probably replace them - it provides more confidence when torquing =3D
up.
As for turning the engine over, it easier with the injectors out, but could=3D
be done with them still in - I have an old torque wrench that I use as a s=3D
tandard socket wrench - the extra length gives more leverage and control.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Julian =3D

Thanks to Jon from Tring for info. on swb 4.2. I have since found out
that Yoyota did put a 4.2 turbo in a swb and called it a hdj73.
Sounds like it would be terrific off-road with the power and short
overhangs.Ayone know where I could get one? Thanks to Julian for
keeping us posted on his major service, I for one am finding it very
interesting. Keep it up.
SNIP
Kirk, pleased that between us we could help, its why Julian got us
all together after all. Its interesting that you found out that they
put the 4.2 turbo in the SWB so I think we would all like to know
which version they used - the 12 or 24valve model, its seems unusual.
As for getting hold of one. Keep Googling for dispersal sales etc.
thoughout Europe. I can't see you would get a RHD one but possible to
get LHD from an aid agency dispersal where they are working in the
Balkans from Romania down to Turkey. Also look for UN dispersals from
Kosovo ( known as 'UNMIK'). Also input the names of familiar
charities etc with the phrase surplus vehicle dispersal and see what
comes up. Some charities retrieve their vehicles to European depots
before disposing of them. The Red Cross (ICRC) also hold a lot of
Toys and have a massive depot in Belgrade, don't forget they may be
listed under 'red crystal' now.
Maarten at AAI is always on the look-out for, and sells, odd models
like this and he may be worth a call. He comes to me for help with
anything he hears of in the Balkans. Last time it was single cab
dropside pick-up 70's in desert camo !
As for finding out more about the variants - and this may interest
Phil and his 70 series too - look first at ....
http://rustybrain.com/cruisers/faq.txt
This is a legendary history of the marque and runs to about 350k.
It was later updated as ....
http://www.cruiserfaq.com/00-01.html
But I am told that it is worth reading and comparing the two versions
side by side, though I don't know what the variation between them is. HTH

Hi Guys
I was just wondering if anyone knows what the headlight relay in the black
box on the passenger side in the engine bay would be capable of
withstanding.
Could you connect spots to this relay or would that over power it or blow
it.

Hi guys
I would like to know where to get my hands on a stretchy cargo net to hold
stuff in the boot of the cruiser.
I tried Machinemart but the gaps in the netting are 6 inches which are too
large, also they want =A318 just for delivery.
I am after a net that can be stretchy and have small holes say about 2
inches square, any ideas.
thanks

John,
That relay or two relays (in case of dim/dip setup) are hardly good
enough for OEM headlamps.
Haven't you had problems with the lights in the past because of the
relay getting hot and failing?
You'll need a separate power relay for the spots, rated at least 40A.
