Following on from this thread, today I managed to get the motor out of the 80.

Apologies for the image quality on the first photo, the Mrs didn't realise the autofocus was off on the DSLR

Yup, looks like there's enough clearance there:-

Oh flip, I hope I can remember where all those pipes/wires go back

I will try and update this thread as the rebuild progresses

Best of luck with the rebuild, Paul
What course of action are you taking? Replacement block or boring out and sleeving? Or something else?

Cheers,

Thanks Andrew

The plan at the moment is to source a replacement block.

Now the motor is out it is clear that the crack in number 6 bore isn't alone :o number 5 pot seems to have the same going on in there.... but worse.

hi paul. Not good news regarding the truck but i have blocks for 80series also steff who is on here probly will have, Dont know who is closer. May save you time on the hunt for one unless you decide to go down another route. Good look with it mate.

Hey Paul, have been wondering where you are with this recently... Good luck...

Wow

Good luck Paul :) sure looks like you have it under control
Does make me look at my efforts to date and laugh!
Look forward to seeing it all fixed up :)

nice work, a little tip let the air out off the tyres then you dont have to stand on blocks when putting it back in

Got a replacement block off Karl of this parish (see above) a couple of weeks ago. Once I had stripped it down to the bare block I took it to Billcar engineering who honed the bores out, pressure tested and crack tested it along with the existing head, all the core plugs were replaced too as a matter of course. I picked it up on Saturday after the guys there gave it a clean bill of health

As I'm not cutting any corners with this rebuild I made up a list of parts needed for the rebuild, gaskets, bearings, oil seals, piston rings, head bolts, main bearing bolts, big end bolts, wigets, cuddly toy.... etc.... etc.

£1,138 lighter the parts are ordered and on their way from the land of the rising sun, many thanks to Ian Rubie

When I saw the cost for the bits I thought "oh fek" and went into a bit of a downer...... the Mrs said "why are you so miserable, stop being such a Scrooge and just get them"...... I guess there aren't many who'd say that :D

One step closer

I wish my missus was that understanding

When Steph says things like that I know she's got her eye on something expensive!

sounds like its all going well then paul. Glad the block was ok. When are you expecting to get it running then?

Timing gears and fuel pump fitted.

Tomorrow the aim is to fit the front timing cover, vacuum pump, power steering pump, new water pump, front pulleys and rear drive plate.... the motor should then be ready to slot back into the engine bay. I'm not fitting the head until after the bell housing bolts are done up as the top two are complete barstewards to get to with the head on.
