Fair price for an alloy wheel?

Hi
I haven't introduced myself yet so here goes. I'm a student at Bristol
University and I'm planing an overland trip to Mongolia on a tight
budget, so no roof tent, fridge etc this summer. We are also limited
by time and so will be shipping the car back from Mongolia.
I am in need of a second spare wheel for my 80 series, which is fitted
with non standard wider 285/75/16 BFG AT. This means that i cant go
for the cheap modular steel rims as they are only 7 inches wide, at
least that's all i can find. I have found a original used Toyota alloy
16X8J for =A360 plus VAT. Can i get a 16x8J wheel for less?
Also anyone know any freight forwarders/shipping agents in Ulaanbaatar?
Thanks

Hi Bob - I recently paid ?175 for a set of 4 genuine alloys (from
another ELCO lister), so I reckon ?60+vat for one isn't the end of the
world though you might try to get a tenner or so off.
cheers,
Andy

Hi Dan
Sorry for the slow reply, we are heading through Poland, Ukraine,
Russia, Kazakhstan, Altai region in Russia, possibly visit lake Baikal
and then into Mongolia through the west border crossing. We decided
against taking the Caspian sea ferry, Turkmenistan etc. as we are
tight on time. We also need to ship our 80 series back from
Ulaanbaatar due to time restrictions. The original plan was to drive
as far as Vladivostok and ship it back from there. We only started
planning in January and we are leaving this June. Does your mate know
of any shipping agents in Ulaanbaatar i can contact?

Rob
Word of advice.
Bring a tube or 2 to fit the 285/75/16 you're running. You might find
it hard to get this size tube on the road.
That way, if you do blow a side wall and can't get a replacement tyre
of that size - you can get a local mob to patch the hole and bang in
the tube.
Putting a tube into a tubeless tyre is not great, is dangerous and
gives a very wobbly ride above 80km/hr but will do as a spare and keep
you running with 2 spares which is always good.
Also - with those wide tyres - be sure and pump them hard when on
sharp stone/rock roads. The locals in Kenya on the notorious Moyale to
Marsbit road ran Mitchelin XZL'a at 60psi to save the side walls. I
diodn't and lost 2 tyres on the same rock!
