intercooler and CO2

Hi guys
before I finally decide to put intercooler in my LC there is one
question that bothers me:
what will be the output of the CO2 gasses and shall I be able to pass
the EU control( I think in English is 'MOT technical inspection')
cheers

Never come across emissions as an issue when fitting an intercooler, my
guesses below =96 anyone actually know the answers?
When tested for emissions the engine will be at under no load so the turbo
won=92t be providing much boost and the intercooler will not alter the
emissions.
When under load the IC will be providing a denser / colder air charge and
the engine ECU will increase fuel, but again that shouldn=92t alter emissions
or will it?
Finally if the IC reduces the exhaust gas temperature then I think the
emissions will increase, although if that=92s the case why do people recommend
blocking of the EGR to reduce smoke output?.
What does the MOT include anyway =96 I know there is a smoke test is there CO
and HC as well?

For Diesel engines the only MoT requirement in the UK is that exhaust
smoke density at the engine's maximum unloaded speed (ie at the rev
limiter) mustn't exceed 2.5 1/m for non-turbo and 3.0 1/m for turbo (not
sure what these units are) using the average of 3 runs. There is not
currently any requirement for CO or HC testing on diesels. There is
quite a nice summary on http://tinyurl.com/l65cr (pdf document).

I'm guessing too, but as far as adding an intercooler goes: it will have
the effect of permitting more air to go through the system which, I
presume, would reduce smoke levels. However because the vehicle will be
stationary during the test the cooling effect will be limited, and under
no load the turbo won't have spun up much, so an intercooler probably
won't make much difference anyway.
What is the "EU control" you refer to? Doesn't each country have its
own standards?
I was present during the emissions test of my truck last year (I was a
bit worried because of the faint blue haze + smell round the back when
started from cold). But in fact it sailed through: in the UK they are
supposed to give you the average of 3 density runs, but if the first
shows low enough smoke levels (< 1.5 1/m) they can do a "fast pass" -
and that is what it did, to my total astonishment, with a score of 1.34.
It was on about 116k miles at the time.
OK, one vehicle does not make a statistical universe, and mine is the
1HD-FT with all the emissions gear intact, but based on my experience I
don't think you have anything to fear from the current UK MoT test.
My mechanic swears by a good dose of injector cleaner + a new air
filter, and if you are worried I would use a tankful of BP Ultimate (or
equivalent) diesel as a treat beforehand .. although there is of course
the time-honoured solution of turning down the mixture control prior to
the test!

That 'EU' control is common for all the European countries in the
European union and it is scheduled every second year-the authorized
workshop is looking for breaks, oil leaks on important
parts, lights, rust and who knows what else...but here everyone is
scared to death when they should pass that shit 'couse you never get
away without paying for this or that....
ahhh and those gasses CO2-as long as I remember our cars(24valves) do
not have auto gearbox just because of those gasses...
cheers

In the UK, the auto box was dropped at the end of =8C94. The reason at the
time was given as emissions from the 24v not being good enough with an auto
and the 4.5 petrol auto was introduced as an alternative. I was working for
a Toyota dealer back then, we had long faces as the auto box diesel was a
great seller and no-one wanted to trade their used auto diesel for a manual,
especially one with such a slow shift. To cap it all, the petrol sold like a
hole in the head.
I never did believe the emissions excuse.
