It smokes on startup, idle and when you rev it. When I went to collect it, it was advertised as smokes on startup, drove it from England to Scotland ~500miles. It was overfilled with oil up to the one on the part number rather than the full level. There was a lot of oil in the breather pipe on the rocker cover. When we got it, it didn't smoke.

We have drained the oil, cleaned out the aftermarket intercooler and pipework as best we can and it is still smoking.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Tobie.

Firstly I wouldn't describe that as being particularly smoky. It's a lorry engine. But that lightish, slightly lazy smoke might be worn injectors. I used to get that and it made your eyes water. If that's the same then re tipping the injectors would cure it. But you have to ask if it's worth doing. Not saying it IS that, but it could be. Having an intercooler could also have messed with the fuelling. But it's not black smoke. It also might just be stuff burning off now that you have cleaned the toobs.

Fellas?

Chris

Thanks Chris - yes it burns your eyes. I got a spare injector pump with the truck, only concern is to set the pump timing

Not the pump, the injectors. It's an old truck, most likely they're stuffed. It's pretty common. I have had several sets tested and they were like leaky teats. No mist of fuel at all. Just jets. You can get a set re-conned on exchange or buy tips and have them done by a diesel specialist. Cured mine instantly.

Valve stem seals? Is it using any oil? Looks a bit blue for injectors imo. Is quite possible it is still crud burning off from being over filled with oil. I'd give a damn good Italian tune up before I started tearing it apart!!! At least that's free (except for the diesel)!!

Chris - yes understand you said the injectors but since i have another pump do i fit that anyway or would that not be necessarry.

Yogi i hope its not oil.

I would really like to know what the problem is, so if i take it for a good run to burn the oil left from the overfill and it still smokes, what would you say are the steps i take? Can you test the injectors? Worth doing a compression test?

Always worth doing a compression test because its easy and eliminates a lot of problems! Remove the injectors and get them tested/rebuilt by a diesel specialist if necessary, but probably might as well do it when you have them out unless near perfect spray pattern.

In my limited experience of 80's, 60's, Chevy diesels, and running a fleet of trucks I would say a set of injectors will deffo sort 95% of that smoke/unburnt fuel problem.
