LJ70 Build Thread!

those aus mavericks look alot like a patrol and nothing like the crap we got here.

stu

Button Plan strikes again! Basically a rule that said that a vehicle had to have x amount of local content, so Ford got into bed with Nissan (and Mazda) to produce a number of Nissan Patrols as Ford Mavericks from what I understand.

smashing write ups again :) So lucky to have tracks like that in OZ
looking fwd to day 3 :)

In SA you see alot of cars that are fords and mazda just not seen the partol copied before. now nissan is owned by renault it may get worse.

Great write up Ben and a cracking bunch of photos as usual!

Yep, the tyre plugs are a must and a can of tyre sealant for good measure! I've used both and they've saved me! Like the tent  Cosy!

Keep them coming mate, the more you put up the more I can show the Mrs and hopefully the closer I'll get to moving out there.

Dargo High Country Trip Report. Day 3.

Thanks guys.

Monday morning we woke up and cooked breakfast.

P1270675_zpse6cc24b2.jpg

P1270676_zps98c7a8e9.jpg

Again sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches.

P1270677_zpse04deefd.jpg

The tent was soon packed up and we were on the tracks again.

P1270678_zpsbfd68156.jpg

P1270679_zps48ea98c5.jpg

A few k's drive and we were at Wonnangatta. Theres not much there anymore, apart from some information boards, a hut and the remains of the original homestead. Wonnangatta was the location of a grisly murder mystery that was never solved. The cook at the homestead was found murdered and as one of the stockmen was missing he was the number one suspect. A search party was sent out and he too was found dead. The murder(s) were never solved!

We hit the road again.

P1270700_zps80070e1c.jpg

P1270703_zps12d7a0e7.jpg

The Zeka track would prove to be a lot of fun. The steep rocky climb took hours to drive!

P1270723_zps9319cd2e.jpg

P1270728_zpsbf8800b9.jpg

We stopped at the top and it was by this point 1pm. With a 4-4.5 hour drive home ahead of us, and me needing to do my weekly food shop when I got back we decided to head for home.

P1270729_zps3d313e6d.jpg

P1270730_zps8b2c1de2.jpg

I was also almost out of fuel, so couldn't really continue on with the rest of the group.

I've come to the conclusion that I need more fuel range. 90 liters just isnt enough, especially with my big Simpson Desert crossing later this year. So I'm now looking at tank options. I'm going to see if a Suzuki 4wd fuel tank will fit in front of my main tank, as we've got loads of tanks at work from all the Suzuki's we've wrecked. Failing that I will build one from scratch. Ideally I want at least another 60 liters giving me 150 in total.

P1270731_zps3f556196.jpg

So we hit the dirt road and headed for Licola.

P1270732_zps2a55222b.jpg

P1270734_zpsddd9a720.jpg

P1270735_zpsa704d7cd.jpg

P1270736_zps1a2dbc26.jpg

P1270740_zpsc60f5321.jpg

We were very glad to get back onto bitumen as the twisty road wed been driving for the last hour + had got some really bad corrugations and on the corners I had to go very slowly as I kept loosing the back end as it would skip and bounce on the corrugations.

P1270744_zps29be0baa.jpg

P1270746_zps5a4de7ef.jpg

I wondered why the car in front had pulled so far off the road.

P1270747_zps900cc4fa.jpg

After the 70 passed us I pulled out and spotted a huge truck coming towards me with a big excavator on the back. Que reversing back off the road very quickly as the truck came thundering past at 100+ kmh.

P1270748_zpscdac0bbc.jpg

P1270749_zps9521f04a.jpg

We stopped in Licola for expensive fuel and ice creams. Some of you may remember Licola, it was here I had to spend a night on my own after LJ broke down on my first club trip, and my old boss then screwed me over!

P1270752_zpse4c6267d.jpg

P1270753_zps404ae204.jpg

We also aired up ready for the 3+ hour drive back to Melbourne.

P1270754_zps7824e06d.jpg

And hit the road.

P1270755_zps691f72ef.jpg

The last time I traveled this stretch LJ was on the back of a tilt truck on a very expensive journey!

P1270757_zps481d140e.jpg

P1270758_zps96a95e8e.jpg

Back into civilization.

P1270759_zps6cc83442.jpg

And finally back on the freeway.

P1270762_zpsf30dad90.jpg

It was an awesome trip and apart from the dented door LJ did well.

Only real issues/negatives were the dust and flies! Neither of these things have been a problem on previous trips so I'm guessing the middle of Summer isnt the ideal time for 4wd trips in Victoria, but it was still great to get out and explore and camp.

OK guys time for a few pics from my working week.

First job was to make 3 Jeep Wrangler battery trays.

Here they are ready to be sent off to be electroplated.

P1280763_zps8f947748.jpg

I also got to do some more on the front bar for the Frankenzuke Jimny.

*I may have got a bit carried away taking pics, theres rather a lot!

P1280764_zps8a6397ef.jpg

OK so cast your minds back to last week when I last posted about this and you may remember that I'm adapting a Vitara bar to fit.

This meant that the ends wernt right.

P1280765_zps68c5f603.jpg

P1280766_zps1e525c2c.jpg

So out with the cardboard, scissors and masking tape.

P1280767_zps657ddc87.jpg

I kept adding bits until I was happy with it.

P1280768_zpsf29a21c1.jpg

P1280769_zps8e4b01c2.jpg

P1280770_zps1764246c.jpg

P1280771_zpsad316d20.jpg

I then removed the cardboard template from the corner of the bar.

P1280772_zps2d241564.jpg

P1280773_zpse6f12161.jpg

I cut the masking tape on the corners and laid the template flat on a piece of steel and drew around it. (The off cut from my rad cowl actually.)

P1280775_zps8d0633a1.jpg

And cut it out on the bandsaw.

P1280776_zpsae3faefd.jpg

I bent it up and tack welded it in position.

P1280777_zpsa0e61f85.jpg

P1280778_zpsbee7cb08.jpg

P1280779_zps672bd5cd.jpg

P1280780_zpsc0794327.jpg

P1280781_zps1f4064d2.jpg

Took the top section off the bar off and fully welded it.

P1280782_zpsff019df3.jpg

Smoothed the welds down and sat it back in position.

P1280783_zps0509eba8.jpg

P1280784_zps50f00fb6.jpg

P1280785_zps5df8d374.jpg

P1280786_zps4e3aaa10.jpg

P1280787_zpsa03b0523.jpg

P1280789_zps632edd81.jpg

Other side next.

P1280791_zps77dc05e1.jpg

I found turning the template over to give me a mirror image of the other side worked perfectly.

P1280792_zpsb9df99d5.jpg

P1280793_zpsf64e511b.jpg

Folded it.

P1280795_zpsfd99883f.jpg

P1280796_zps38cf81e9.jpg

P1280797_zpsea40be5a.jpg

Tack welded in position.

P1280798_zpse4372b62.jpg

Took the bar back off and fully welded and then ground down the welds.

P1280799_zpsddabc269.jpg

P1280800_zps13f7bf33.jpg

P1280801_zpsf30e2fa0.jpg

P1280802_zpsef7eb29e.jpg

P1280803_zps05e3a058.jpg

I wanted to add an up stand all the way around the top to add strength and to help fill in the gap between the bar and headlights and flares.

This involved spot welding 40mm x 3mm flat along the length of the bar bending and hammering as I went, starting from the middle and working out each side.

P1280804_zps7203a840.jpg

P1280805_zps58b069c3.jpg

P1280806_zps045c573d.jpg

P1280807_zpsfe0ef17f.jpg

My idea is to have a push on strip of black rubber running the entire length of the bar to fill in the small gap thats left between the top of the up stand piece and the lights/body.

P1280808_zpsa21c2fae.jpg

P1280809_zps9cfd4bbf.jpg

The end of the flares will be attached to the ends of the bar.

P1280810_zps930b4324.jpg

P1280811_zps9cbc1fe6.jpg

P1280812_zps2e002e9b.jpg

P1280813_zps7244d2ae.jpg

Thats as far as I got on the bar but I may do some more on it tomorrow.

LJ next.

Firstly bad news.

I spotted a puddle of oil under the front of LJ and on closer inspection it looks like the winch is leaking oil.

I'm not sure how as the oil level sits below the oil seal so it shouldn't leak unless the housing is cracked/damaged/oil drain plug has vibrated out.

I didnt even get to use it on the last trip. :eusa-snooty:

P1280814_zps9325acef.jpg

P1280815_zpsa368363e.jpg

I needed to fix the dent in the door so the window would close.

Door card off.

P1280816_zps8e189f31.jpg

It was actually pushed in quite a bit where the mirror is and had also pushed up.

P1280817_zps147d8cbb.jpg

Difficult to get pics of the dents due to the light/angle.

P1280818_zpsfef07856.jpg

P1280819_zps8db57160.jpg

Glass out.

P1280820_zps80ee523d.jpg

Where the door was dented it had actually closed in on the area where the glass sits by about 20mm.

P1280821_zpsf94375bd.jpg

P1280822_zps5f50725d.jpg

I found a suitable off cut of hardwood skirting board and squeezed it into the door cavity. I attached some wire to it so I could pull it up into position.

P1280823_zpsaf655732.jpg

I was then able to use a 1/4 drive socket extension bar through one of the holes in the inner skin of the door, and a hammer to bash the timber where the dent was.

P1280824_zps77c6edc5.jpg

Ended up having to cable tie the wire into position so that the timber was held in position as I needed both hands to hammer the dent out.

P1280825_zps99f8ab49.jpg

Still slightly dented but a hell of a lot better than it was and the window now had a uniform gap all the way along.

P1280826_zpsec165e70.jpg

P1280827_zps465c5a8f.jpg

P1280828_zps66a6c08b.jpg

P1280829_zps32b07a4b.jpg

Put it all back together.

P1280830_zps3ffbb8ab.jpg

P1280831_zpsffe9cb2b.jpg

P1280832_zps1c8f0fcb.jpg

P1280833_zps60b0d0ef.jpg

With the window now up I could wash all the dust and dirt off LJ.

P1290839_zps6c715b6b.jpg

P1290840_zps8d9b26dd.jpg

I got a tyre plug kit from work.

P1290837_zpsad0f1613.jpg

P1290838_zpsced281a7.jpg

My work colleague was telling me he drove all the way back from Queensland after using 5 sticks of tyre plug to fix a gash in the side wall of one of his tyres after a trip to Cape York. Said it was fine and didnt loose any air for the entire 3000+ km journey.

Battery trays next..................

I made a jig to allow me to quickly and accurately weld together the Ford Ranger/Mazda BT50 underbody battery trays that I've designed and developed.

P1290834_zpsa1d33cfa.jpg

And heres the first 3.

P1290835_zps1743868a.jpg

P1290836_zpsdfe129c9.jpg

Got the first 11 welded up now.

P1300842_zps70bd71f0.jpg

P1300843_zps8cdb041c.jpg

My first production run is 50 trays, once they've been electroplated and sold I will start making batches of 100 at a time.

I timed myself making them, and from picking all the bits up, assembling them on the jig, welding them all together and removing from the jig, 4 minutes.

So I'm guessing I will average 10 an hour. :icon-biggrin:

And finally the gate latches that I've designed and developed.

The idea is my boss wants some latches for his farm gates. They must allow the gates to swing shut and for the latch to engage, and they need to allow the gate to swing from either direction. So the gates can be opened into or out of the fields. The gates will have a pin on the end that will locate in the latches.

Anyway............................

The first few I made have been fitted and tested and work well.

So now I've got to make a load more. It made sense to have the heart shaped pieces laser cut, I will just need to bend them all in the brake press.

P1300844_zpsec53fa01.jpg

P1300845_zps1d0b76c6.jpg

Back to LJ....................

I need to do a list of all the work I want/need to do on LJ and I'm tempted to park her up in the garage now and make a start. Might take a few months.

The electrics is a big job. I want to pull out every piece of non standard wiring and then fix any electrical issue within the standard loom, so things like working out which wires need connecting in the engine bay to get the turbo lights working and the oil pressure gauge and low oil warning lights working. These are issues that were never fixed when I did the engine conversion.
I need to work out why the rear wiper stopped working and why the reverse lights are permanently lit if the lights have bulbs in them.

Then I can start building and adding my own loom. Using all different colored wires for different things and different thickness wires depending on the current they will be carrying. All with soldered joints/proper connectors and all the fuses and relays together neatly in one place. I want the electrics to be perfect! :icon-biggrin:

I want to add remote central locking, ideally with the flip out VW style keys, which I will have to get cut to match my ignition.

I want to add the big ARB compressor and an air tank.

I want EGT and boost gauges and one showing fuel level of the auxiliary fuel tank I want to add, these will all be in the replacement piece of dash my boss gave me to replace the inclometer.

I want to add a Piranha super loom kit to make my standard headlights super bright.

I want an LED light bar on the bull bar and some super bright reverse lights on the back. Might also add some lights on the roof rack for when I'm camping.

I need to build the roof rack.

Repair and modify the back door to take the gas stove.

Theres heaps of other things I want to do, but thats plenty to be going on with for now.

nice report Ben, thanks for sharing it with us :)
Bugs yuk!!!

Thanks Steve.

The flies didn't bite or pee on you like they can do up north in the Tropics, they would just land all over you which gets pretty annoying. :icon-evil:

Thankfully it was only for an hour or 2 before sunset and after sunrise, but on all my previous trips they've never been a problem.

Awesome Trip Ben!

Interesting that the engine was getting hot on your steep hill climb, it's like the thermostat takes a while to react to the sudden temperature change and therefore the temp rises before it opens and allows fresh coolant into the engine. What would be great is a electronic thermostat that opens on temperature reading in the core of the engine and not just the top. It's easy enough to say put a lower temp thermostat in place but on long drives the engine will be too cool, but may manage when pushing it. And obviously the opposite occurs with a higher one.

hmm I really need to investigate more about this, I'm sure it can be improved and when it is it really will make these engines Bullet proof!

Again, great write-up Ben and ace photos

Sorry about your door, but you seem to have fixed that already  The guy that de-dented my 80 mainly used a spot weld and pull method. For some reason he said that gave a better profile of the transition between the unbent and the bent part of the panel.

Whatever, he did a job that I couldn't detect with my eyes, good enough for me. These guys are wizards in my book, my front wing from a crash several years ago was mangled up into a very compact concertina in one place, and it thought there was no chance to salvage it.

He did, and I couldn't detect the repair. Those with a keener eye, Chris, Andy and others would probably see it, but it's good enough for me! :icon-biggrin:

Cheers!

Hi Ben, thanks for having us along at the weekend, it was great to catch up and meet your friends, as well as see LJ in action again half a world away.

Great write up and good pics (feel free to copy and post any of the pics we've put on Facebook from the weekend).

No double-entradas here Scott :)

Loving your Facebook updates BTW :) Great to hear its panning out well :)

Ben, on the bumper build, do you intend any hi-lift points or otherwise?

Loving the thread as usual - if I ever get my RJ73 back in action, I'll have to finally take it on some proper off-roading!

Also interested in the gate latches, as I think I could do with something like that at my place (once I get some more welding gear - some tw&ts have stolen ever bloody tool I had in my garage). I can't quite work out how they work though, and so look forward to seeing them on a gate!

Thanks guys.

No I dont think so Clive. There not actually that common over here from what I've seen.

The only jack I carry in LJ is a high lift and thats what I always use to change wheels on the track, but I wouldn't use it without the adapter I've got which fits nicely into the tube inserts welded in my rocks sliders and bull bar. The guys in my 4wd club had never seen a high lift jack adapter before I joined.

Frankenzuke is more of a display vehicle than an actual vehicle that will get used. Although we will be taking it out for the magazine photo shoot and the filming for the TV program. :icon-cool:

Thanks Edward.

I will get some pics/a video to show how the gate latches work. :icon-wink:

Thanks guys.

Frankenzuke is more of a display vehicle than an actual vehicle that will get used. Although we will be taking it out for the magazine photo shoot and the filming for the TV program. :icon-cool:

That's a damn shame Ben, I'll bet fzukie is well capable, what a waste! :eusa-naughty:

IMHO Frankenzuke will be better off road and do better in the winch comps than the 80k Vitara based race truck!

The race truck sitting on fancy expensive coil overs all round doesn't flex or articulate at all. Great for speed events, but not so good for traversing rugged terrain.

Maybe after the filming/photo shoot my boss might decided to do a comp in it. :icon-twisted:

I've had a think and a chat with Tony S and have decided to offer the spare seat in LJ to one of you club members on my Simpson Trip.

Theres already quite a few people flying in from the UK for the trip and its looking like it will be an amazing trip!

So if any of you guys or girls fancy a holiday/adventure in September/October then shout up. :icon-cool:

I'm pleased to announce this space has now been taken. :icon-biggrin:

My other best mate in the UK who I know quite a few of you have met, Nelson got in touch to say hed like to take the seat if its still available.

So hes flying in for 3 weeks in September. Plan is to have a few days in Melbourne, show him round ARB, Kaymar and Piranha HQ's and of course show him the city.

Then drive to Adelaide to Chris's to meet up with Chris, Tony S and all the other guys and girls. Then we will be away 4wding for just over 2 weeks. Then we drive back to Melbourne and have a few more days relaxing before Nelson has to fly home.

Really excited about him coming over and the epic adventure we will have. Cant think of a better person to travel with and I know he will take good care of LJ during the 50% of the trip he will be driving for! :icon-biggrin:
