I am 100% sure side wall repairs are Illegal

HOWEVER they will work fine as a repair and will get the job done. You just need someone who can do a good job at it, and is willing to do it.

Right got this back,

Its not illegal as long as its hot vulcanised can do a standard repair aslong as the wound to the tyre does not exceed 25mm hope this helps.
Meant to say cant do standard repair.

Paul

thanks Roger for your concerns. :)

thats what i thought Paul, and hence my post on the previous page:-

hoping to get the tyre fixed tomorrow. need to see if my local agricultural tyre place will vulcanize the hole in the side wall for me.

I've had a visible sidewall repair on my rear door mounted spare since I bought the 70 in 2003. It's gone through every MOT since with that repair.

It is illegal to repair a damaged side wall.

Just because you got your tyre repaired, does not make it legal. If you have a repaired tyre actually in use i.e. not the spare, your insurance is invalid, so any accident you are involved in becomes your financial burden.

The spare is NOT part of the MoT test.

I think it is, if it's bald it's a fail, but if it's not there they can't 'test' it.

Just being a tad picky here, but whilst I fully support Roger's view on tyre safety, I don't think it's actually illegal to repair a side wall. That infers that the person doing the repair commits a crime against the state. Is it illegal to use a tyre on the road that has had the side wall repaired - ahh that's a different question. And actually, I don't know. But I'm pretty sure that repairing a side wall is not actually on the statute books as an indictable offence. You could use it off road or on private land, or even a go kart track for example. I also think that for your insurance to be invalid, the accident would need to bear relation to a tyre defect. If you were hit by falling space debris for example, I think it unlikely that a tyre repair would be considered or even discovered.

OK pedantic moment over, but let's just be careful with language here.

That is correct. If it is there it is tested, but if it is not it cannot be tested so cannot fail.

apparently vulcanising tyres is quite specialist. neither of my local tyre places can do it themselves, and they specialise in big agricultural and machine tyres.

anyway.............................

dropped the wheel/tyre off and they will get it sent off monday morning, and it will be back and ready for me to collect thursday afternoon.

£25.

seems quite reasonable to me, tyres got plenty of life left in it, and saves ruining a nice set of tyres.

I have used a place on the Wirral a few times for this sort of thing Ben for about the same price - was going to suggest them if you weren't able to get sorted

I don't see anything wrong with this

TBH a correctly repaired tyre is just as safe as any other, they are much stronger than you think!

so i got them fitted on my wheels.

also got the tyre back from being vulcanised.

so out with the trolley jack and impact wrench.

5 mins later, with the back ones fitted i took it for a test drive.

im happy with the gearing with these huge tyres, and top end it should be much better for cruising as the revs will be lower when doing 60-70mph.

came back and had a look at the front ones.

SAM_0556.jpg

with the steering on lock, the tyres will catch the end of the rock slider, even after ive cut it at an angle, and also on the bottom of the inner wheel arch.

SAM_0555.jpg

SAM_0557.jpg

and the other issue is that one of the rear tyres will hit the exhaust when articulating.

SAM_0558.jpg

SAM_0560.jpg

plenty of clearance under the diff now with these huge tyres.

SAM_0561.jpg

doesnt look like the rears will catch on the rock slider or bumper, but i will have to wait and see.

SAM_0563.jpg

its no wonder Chris cant lift these onto his rear wheel carrier without the use of a highlift or winch. 58kgs!

SAM_0564.jpg

a whole 20kgs heavier than a 35" BFG KM1. :o

SAM_0566.jpg

SAM_0565.jpg

im working 7 days a week, getting plenty of overtime in, so wont have time to make the adjustments to get the tyres fitted properly for a while.

so re-fitted my other tyres for now.

SAM_0567.jpg

must get some black tyre paint for where its been vulcanised.

SAM_0568.jpg

Roger i mentioned to the tyre place about your concerns regarding legality of repairing side walls on tyres.

the tyre places arnt allowed to repair side walls them selves, that is illegal.

but........................they are allowed to send them off and get them vulcanised, that is totally legal and quite common.

im actually wondering why i bought 37"s and not 35"s. :?

i guess the price was too good not to. :)

the easy solution would be more lift, but i dont want to go down that route until ive got it road legal in OZ. then i might stick a 4" suspension lift on, probably old man emu or tough dog. certainly wont be buying ironman again. :)

Fedimas are heavy because I'm told there formed on lorry carcasses

Good point is there strong
But
My mate was running them on his challenge landy and had issues with breaking updated CV's and shafts, we think it was due to the lack of sidewall flex. Problem went away went he fitted real simex's :?

But they look sweeeeeeeet
