great pics Steven, thanks.

You mentioned running on veg oil Steven, by filling my tank before i left, and taking a jerry can with me, i saved £50 over the course of the weekend!

not a huge amount, and obviously a bit of hassle mixing it and sticking it in the tank. But the amount of trips i go on, saving £40-£50 each time aint bad!

Had some good news today!!!

Ive been granted state sponsorship for Victoria! :banana-angel: :banana-blonde: :banana-dance: :banana-dreads: :banana-explosion: :banana-fingers: :banana-guitar: :banana-jumprope: :banana-linedance: :banana-ninja: :banana-parachute: :banana-rainbow: :banana-rock: :banana-skier: :banana-stoner: :banana-tux: :banana-wrench: :character-ariel: :character-bart: :character-beavisbutthead: :character-kermit: :character-cartman: :character-smurfguy: :character-spongebobdance: :character-luigi: :character-mario: :character-yoshi:

Great news Ben - well done but now carry on with the trip report please!!!

Unfortunately my camera battery died on Saturday evening.

So the rest of my pics were taken with an old camera i found in my glove box.

Apologies for the terrible quality of them. :(

But fortunately Steven managed to get some good ones with his phone.

So ive included them as well. :D

So Saturday morning i was up at 6.30AM again.

excellent facilities at the camp site!

SAM_0790.jpg

And a great view from the toilet!

SAM_0791.jpg

After having breakfast and packing up camp, Steven needed to tie his inner wheel arch out of the way as it kept catching the tyre.

SAM_0792.jpg

Damage to Mog's disco, after a wall jumped out behind him while he was reversing. :liar:

SAM_0793.jpg

By 9AM we were back on the lane and carried on heading North.

SAM_0794.jpg

SAM_0795.jpg

The next lane we were heading for, is the byway that snakes its way around the Claerwen Reservoir.

SAM_0798.jpg

IMG_1240-1.jpg

IMG_1241-1.jpg

IMG_1242-1.jpg

I saw and failed to photograph another red kite.

SAM_0803.jpg

IMG_1247-1.jpg

SAM_0806.jpg

SAM_0807.jpg

SAM_0808.jpg

And finally we were off the never ending lane around the reservoir, and dropped down past the dam below.

SAM_0809.jpg

SAM_0810.jpg

And through the ford across the river.

SAM_0811.jpg

And onto what is a great lane.

SAM_0812.jpg

IMG_1249-1.jpg

IMG_1250-1.jpg

SAM_0813.jpg

SAM_0815.jpg

SAM_0816.jpg

SAM_0817.jpg

SAM_0818.jpg

Start of next lane.

SAM_0819.jpg

And after that we were in New Bridge On Wye, to drive the huge ford across the river!

SAM_0820.jpg

Definitely deeper than the last few times ive seen it.

SAM_0821.jpg

SAM_0822.jpg

SAM_0823.jpg

SAM_0824.jpg

IMG_1252-1.jpg

IMG_1253-1.jpg

Next we headed to the steepest, muddiest hill climb that I know of in Wales. This lane beat me the first 3 times i tried to drive it. :o

I only eventually conquered it with a winch, and then the last time i managed it with decent tyres and lockers.

As we got to the gate, I saw 2 horse riders coming down. So I told the other guys to pull over and switch off their engines.
I then opened the gate and called them through. We had a chat with them for 10mins and they were both really nice ladies, having a great day out.

The one was also pretty hot!

SAM_0825.jpg

IMG_1254-1.jpg

SAM_0826.jpg

SAM_0827.jpg

IMG_1255-1.jpg

IMG_1256-1.jpg

SAM_0828.jpg

SAM_0829.jpg

Soon i got to the first challenging bit.

IMG_1257-1.jpg

IMG_1258-1.jpg

IMG_1259-1.jpg

I tried hard to get up but i failed.

If id had a working rear locker, id have made it.

While i was trying 3 motorcyclist's stopped for a chat.

SAM_0830.jpg

SAM_0831.jpg

IMG_1260-1.jpg

IMG_1261-1.jpg

The motorcyclist's were really friendly chaps and had come from Derby. We talked for a while and all shared a bit of knowledge on a few of the lanes, both around Wales and also in the Peak district.

We said good bye.

SAM_0832.jpg

SAM_0833.jpg

And got on with the challenge!

SAM_0834.jpg

With my tyres now full of clay.

SAM_0835.jpg

And as there was nothing to winch off, I let Giles past and he had a go at getting up in his fully locked Defender.

With plenty of gas and a couple of attempts Giles flew up.

IMG_1264-1.jpg

SAM_0836.jpg

SAM_0837.jpg

SAM_0838.jpg

I then used his truck as an anchor, and winched my self up.

IMG_1265-1.jpg

SAM_0839.jpg

Once i was up, i attached a kinetic rope to Steven's cruiser and pulled him up.

SAM_0840.jpg

SAM_0841.jpg

Mog was then able to winch his disco up, using Steven's cruiser as an anchor.

SAM_0842.jpg

SAM_0843.jpg

While this was happening Steven cut his hand on a barbed wire fence.

SAM_0845.jpg

So out came the first aid kit, and Giles patched Steven up.

SAM_0846.jpg

SAM_0847.jpg

Once Steven's hand had been bandaged up, we had a cup of tea and slice of cake, and then carried on.

Giles said to me as he walked back to get in his truck "I will go first as im in the most capable truck"!

My reply to that cannot be written here!

So i followed him up and as we got to a particularly rough bit, Giles's truck had had enough and decided it needed a lie down!

IMG_1267-1.jpg

SAM_0848.jpg

SAM_0849.jpg

SAM_0850.jpg

SAM_0852.jpg

IMG_1268-1.jpg

So i got my snatch block and strops out, and we rigged them up to winch his truck back on to its wheels.

IMG_1270-1.jpg

SAM_0853.jpg

SAM_0854.jpg

And slowly pulled it back onto its wheels.

SAM_0855.jpg

SAM_0856.jpg

SAM_0857.jpg

Giles then got back in and attempted to drive forwards, which resulted in this crazy angle!

SAM_0858.jpg

SAM_0859.jpg

We then decided we needed to run his winch line out, so he could winch forwards, while at the same time i would slowly let my winch line out.

SAM_0860.jpg

SAM_0861.jpg

SAM_0862.jpg

Unfortunately while winching there was an almighty bang from underneath Giles's landy as one of his rear shock absorbers failed.

SAM_0863.jpg

SAM_0864.jpg

SAM_0865.jpg

SAM_0866.jpg

With Giles through it was my turn. rather than trying toavoid the bomb hole i drove straight though it, and almost made it through, before needing to winch off the back of Gile's landy to get up the last bit.

IMG_1277-1.jpg

I then turned around and re-positioned ready to winch Steven up.

SAM_0867.jpg

But Steven's front bumper kept just hitting the bank.

IMG_1278-1.jpg

IMG_1279-1.jpg

IMG_1280-1.jpg

We then tried with the waffles, but it was still no good.

SAM_0868.jpg

So out with the shovel, and i dug down a bit to create a ledge for the top of the waffle to sit on, and this time Steven was able to get his front bumper up and over the bank.

SAM_0868.jpg

SAM_0869.jpg

SAM_0870.jpg

And finally Mog's turn.

SAM_0871.jpg

He almost made it, but ended up having to use Steven's cruiser as an anchor and winch him self up.

SAM_0872.jpg

SAM_0873.jpg

We got to the end of the lane and pulled in to check the vehicles and clean some of the mud off the lights and windows.

SAM_0874.jpg

And Giles removed his broken shock.

SAM_0875.jpg

So what a cracking lane!

We met the friendly horse riders and motorcyclist's, Steven nearly cut his hand off, and we pulled together as a team and winched, snatched, dug and waffle'd our way up the hill! :D

3.5 hours to drive 1/4 of a mile along a lane. :o

So we carried onto the next lanes, and were now heading North West.

At the start of the next lane a motorcyclist was just going through the gate, and he stopped and said hed open all the gates, if we closed them!

Perfect!

SAM_0876.jpg

SAM_0877.jpg

SAM_0878.jpg

SAM_0880.jpg

SAM_0881.jpg

SAM_0882.jpg

A mile or so of tarmac and were onto the next lane.

SAM_0883.jpg

SAM_0884.jpg

The view at the start of the next lane was spectacular!

It was so amazing that a viewing platform had been built, and thats what the silver car was doing blocking access to the lane.

SAM_0885.jpg

car moved and were off.

SAM_0887.jpg

SAM_0888.jpg

SAM_0889.jpg

IMG_1282-1.jpg

IMG_1283-1.jpg

A few more road miles, and after a quick stop for supplies we were at another of my favourite lanes.

We stopped and i informed everyone they may wish to secure anything in there truck that was loose, as this next lane is a little bit challenging!

SAM_0890.jpg

SAM_0891.jpg

SAM_0892.jpg

IMG_1285-1.jpg

SAM_0893.jpg

SAM_0894.jpg

Very very washed out in places, and certainly worse than my last visit a few months ago.

SAM_0899.jpg

SAM_0900.jpg

SAM_0901.jpg

some one had placed a railway sleeper here to try and aid getting up and down this badly washed out section.

SAM_0902.jpg

SAM_0907.jpg

SAM_0908.jpg

SAM_0909.jpg

SAM_0914.jpg

SAM_0915.jpg

IMG_1294-1.jpg

IMG_1295-1.jpg

IMG_1296-1.jpg

We made a decision not to drive back up, but to head for camp.

SAM_0916.jpg

SAM_0917.jpg

Steven found us an amazing camp spot.

nice and sheltered and private, but with an awesome view off the top of the mountain. :D

IMG_1298-1.jpg

IMG_1299-1.jpg

SAM_0919.jpg

At this point Giles had to go as he needed to be home that night.

So we arranged the trucks and set up camp.

SAM_0920.jpg

IMG_1300-1.jpg

The pig tends to smoke a bit when first lit, so we stuck it outside till it got going.

SAM_0922.jpg

SAM_0924.jpg

toasted my muffin's.

SAM_0926.jpg

And then added sausage, egg, cheese and ketchup! mmm.............. and of course an ice cold beer.

SAM_0927.jpg

We then spent the night drinking beer, looking at the maps, plotting the route for the next day, and listening to music on Steven's ipad.

So another fantastic day in Wales!

Will hopefully get Day 3's trip report up tomorrow night. ;)

Well done Ben  It was only earlier today I was wondering how you were getting on with your move to Oz, this is great news

I'm enjoying your Wales weekend report, it looks like you found some nice lanes. I really must find time to get back there.

Thanks Scott.

Was an amazing weekend away.

Ive been on quite a few trips now, and there always a blast, but i think this has got to be one of the best trips ive ever had!

I think its the first time ive managed to combine all the challenging lanes i know of in Mid Wales
into one trip.

Great news Ben - well done but now carry on with the trip report please!!!

Thanks dude!

Well done with the Oz success

Wow - looking like an epic Day2 for the trip! with some serious recovery work

another lane there to add to my "not to do" list! or at least not without the landanchor ;)

I'm going to have to try and do another laning weekend this year!

re Oz: So pleased for you Ben! Well done.

As I'm a lazy b'stard can you remember if (and when) you did your front swivels? I start to look for something on this thread and spend half an hour looking at your pics instead. My swivels are getting a bit sloppy and I really need to do something about them before the Winter.

Great News About Oz Ben ... another UK 4x4 buddy bites the dust, people will start calling me Jonah!

Monday morning i woke again at 6.30AM.

The last lane we did, the evening before is a really great lane! :D :D

When i first heard about it a few years ago my mates referred to it as "the bastard" lane.
But i really dont think thats a fair name for it, maybe "smile lane" would be more appropriate!

Because all any of us did from start to finish was smile! This lane really has got it all, tight wooded sections, deep water filled troughs, steep rocky climbs and descents, thick boggy mud, severe side slopes, and even a water fall to drive up and down!

Anyway..........................seen as wed camped near the top end of this lane, we all decided it would be rude not to use it to get down off the mountain!

SAM_0935.jpg

SAM_0936.jpg

SAM_0937.jpg

I spent a lot of time driving along resting on the bank, due to how badly washed out the track was which caused it to have a severe side slope.

We stopped, aired up, cleaned lights and windows, and said goodbye.

My 1.5 hour drive home seemed to last forever as i was so tired.

But finally by 4.30pm i was home. :D

its great doing more than a 2 day laning trip

Id love to do a trip like you did around the UK Andy.

Not sure id be able to do more than 3 days of drinking 5 or 6 pins every night, followed by only 4 hours sleep though.

As I'm a lazy b'stard can you remember if (and when) you did your front swivels? I start to look for something on this thread and spend half an hour looking at your pics instead. My swivels are getting a bit sloppy and I really need to do something about them before the Winter.

thanks John.

Im sorry but i cant remember.

I keep meaning to go through the entire thread and do a contents page, which im hoping one of the mods could stick on the first page for me.

Would certainly make it easier for people to find things.
