Manual gearboxes and big V8's

A mate of mine is building a mad 4x4, with a small-block chevvy as a power source.
He wants a manual transmission and transfer box to hook it all together.
Several sources say that TLC 5-speed and transfer box is an option.
Does anyone have any leads where he could buy a gearbox and transfer box out of an 80-series in the UK
and even better any clues on conversion plates would be greatfully recieved.
Hi Andrew
Keep your eye on ebay, there are cruisers that are scrapped from time to

Hi Andrew,
I think the best bet would be to keep an eye on ebay - every so often an 80 comes up for breaking. There
is also one being advertised in the back of the latest issue of Total Off Road, although I suspect that
it will be an auto.
I know the guys in the states often do this sort of conversion, dropping the small block chevy unit into
TLCs although don't recall any 80 specific conversions. One good place to start is to do some searches
on the LCool 80 series archives at - follow the archives link on the left.
Alternatively search the forums on
Hope that helps.

Follow threads on the GM 6.2 / 6.5 diesel V8s. These are sometimes fitted into 80's, they share the same bolt hole pattern for gearbox attachment as the petrol engines.
As far as I can recall the (rarely fitted) manual gearbox option for the GM engines is made by New Venture, there are 5 and 6 speed options. Torque ratings are huge.
For more info on these engines - gearboxes have a look at
Is an 80 chassis / drive train being used ?
