Power Steering Failure

Hi, Small problem with power steering, We were in the Semenic mountains in Romania & all was well until we stopped, Restarted vehicle & the power steering had failed, removed pump to check for shaft breakage as I did not want to cause any damage to the engine timing gears, pump seemed fine so refitted & drove on, a few hundred miles just before the Turkish border the power steering came back to life, doe's anyone know how the solenoid valve on the steering box works & can this cause the power steering to stop working.
