Really?

Towpack said "The G Wagen is the probably the only SUV that started life as a military vehicle. Mercedes obviously jumped on the fashion wagon by fitting them out with luxury interiors and V8 power so they could handle the school run."

Having driven and worked on a few of the German Military G Wagon's I can confirm in 5 cylinder non turbo form they are painfully slow and even slower when you get to a hill..... also dreadfully prone to rust although they are mechanically pretty strong and do ride pretty well..... none of the 5 cylinder ones I've driven will entertain starting until the pre heat light has gone out when cold and that can take some time....I'd hate to be relying on a cold G Wagon to make my getaway as the enemy came over the horizon.
In military form there is little to place a G Wagon over a Landrover Wolf.......

but what is the alternative if you want 4 wheel drive, reasonable load space/comfort and the ability to tow 3.5 tonnes?

Had that need for 30 years, but it's a very niche market.

@chapel gate I agree Mike, as I hope, I'm "in the know".
It's fine for individuals who are perhaps running the odd vehicle, but 90s era vehicles are certainly not cost effect if you're running a business with several.

Found this company on Autotrader

Black Stallion Cars Ltd

This one is Landcruiser specialist. Has good cars in all budgets. There was one museum standard car, expensive but super underneath.

Any budget as long as it's elastic. Yikes.

There's a 100 series on there for £26,990 that was 10-11K on FB a few months ago.

They do seem a little optimistic with some of their prices, but they do have some tidy looking vehicles.

I feel slightly wrong for quite liking the look of that "Raptor Surf"!

There's a White 100 4.7 V8 - which seems to have been freshly imported, loads of ARB kit fitted - it has the cleanest underside of any used car I have ever seen. Spotless and not even a hint of rust anywhere......:sunglasses:

Raptor's cool, though I wouldn't buy it - no harm, no foul. :icon-wink:

That White 100 is stunning,... very difficult to value a vehicle like that - £37k seems expensive, especially as its a petrol - but finding a better one would be difficult.

The build seems a bit weird to me though - its kind of kitted out as an overlander/offroader, but would anyone really use it as such? Not many people overland in petrols for a start. And why all the ARB gear, but no rock rails or underbody protection? Seems some odd decisions there.

It almost seems like they stubbled across a load of ARB kit and fitted what would make the most visual impact, without necessarily thinking about functionality.

The 80 series, even in diesel form, is an uneconomical beast for big annual miles and can be bettered for comfort by many. There are a band of loyal enthusiastic owners out there that keep them going and, as someone else has said, those vehicles do not come to market very often. Despite their heavy fuel use, for a vehicle that will tow 3500kg the 4.2 is not that much worse on mpg than many modern pick up.
Brother has a late discovery that is lovely to drive and quite frugal for a heavy 4x4 but it cost an eye watering sum, requires expensive main dealership maintenance and, I will guess, some really big future bill when 5 to 10 years old with average mileage.
Some thought me mad to spend several k on my old 80 when I knackered the engine. I need a vehicle that will occasionally tow 3500kg and be a general workhorse. The rest of it is reasonably tidy judging by some of the old crap for sale. The only other vehicle I should have considered is probably the model of Shogun that will tow 3500kg. F in L has an early Disco 3 that is a much nicer drive than my 80 but it is expensive to keep on the road.

It will be back on ebay in a couple of day's Andy, Because of a No Show.... But WOW!! Indeed.... Crazy Price

It will be back on ebay in a couple of day's Andy

Maybe, maybe not, from the number of calls I get these days I'm thinking the buyers are outnumbering the sellers. A lot of the time though I think people think there is money to be made with them.
One thing which holds people back from letting go is dealers nabbing them and offering them at a £5k markup which has been seen time and again.

Its hard to see how they can turn that one around and Make a profit.... I think that's at PPP as they say in the Trade, Peak, Profit, Potential,..... I keep clinging on to Mine at the moment.... But like iv said before Andy....... When folk start waving silly Money under your Nose, Selling sounds an Option.....Especially when No one round here Has Diesel at the Moment,..... Went to 5 different garages yesterday just to Find Petrol for the Bike, When i did all they had was E10..... Getting a bit sick of it to be Honest.... :character-oldtimer:

I must admit, good as 80 series are, I struggle to see how values like this are sustainable - unless all these buyers are expecting a zombie apocalypse soon!

Having said that, the way things are going, that wouldn't be a complete surprise tbh.......:icon-rolleyes:

Apocalyptic Zombies or Not, It doesn't Matter what you've got, if there is No Diesel There's No Diesel  .... But i get your point about the 80 being over priced, But then again Look at Tarted up Defenders...... :confusion-shrug:

Hate to say it but I can understand why there is such a enthusiast following for the Defender - whether you bought a Land Rover in the 1950s or one of the last "Defender" models, you're the owner of an instantly recognisable and iconic vehicle, part of a massive club and enthusiast base.

Landcruisers simply don't have that cachet amongst the general public - of course we owners know how good they are and so do people who know a thing or two about vehicles but for the man in the street, it's simply another 4x4. Whereas a Land Rover Defender.......

As I stated at the start, I hate to say it!

Point taken about the availability of diesel. However that is just a temporary blip......I hope so anyway.
