OK, let's see if you can work out what I have been doing in the workshop all evening.

First I made this

Then this

P1000882.JPG[/attachment:2nc6l6oc]

Then I made this bit

P1000883.JPG[/attachment:2nc6l6oc]

The spring (which I didn't make) goes on here

P1000884.JPG[/attachment:2nc6l6oc]

They then drop inside that bit

P1000885.JPG[/attachment:2nc6l6oc]

The end cap goes on

P1000886.JPG[/attachment:2nc6l6oc]

All finished off with the ball on the end

Yep, it's a spring loaded 'hold open' pin for my wheel carrier.

Rather pleased with it. Could have been a bit smaller, but I need some different tooling.

I can see the next job being a Landcruiser from scratch

Wow - excellent stuff Chris!

Thanks chaps. I am learning. There is a gulf between knocking something up, like this and making something really beautiful, but some of that actually relates to the material. I did some aluminium recently and without trying, it looked fabulous. This steel doesn't come up very smooth.

Nice work Chris    As soon as I saw the spring, I knew what you were making. Detailed finishing touches make all the difference.

Ahh, no fooling you. Still got one or two touches to go. I shall put some spanner slots top and bottom using the miller. Then it can be nipped up. Might also put in a plastic bush / seal in the top.

Very nice mate  , but I think you should have gone the whole hog and made the spring aswell.

Wow Chris, that looks great,

I guess there are going to be dreams every night now, about what to make next day.
I am sure the confidence will grow and grow.

Well done.

Gra.

Top work - almost a work of art!

you will be making rifle moderators next!

Nice work Chris - is that mild or stainless steel you are machining there? Can you give us an idea of the size of the thing?

Thanks fellas. It's mild Gav, but hard to get a good finish. Even with a new carbide tip and coolant it seems to tear almost. I polished it up with emery and wire wool whilst in the lathe. Size wise, you'd better ask my Missus. She's the expert.

It's about 25 mm od and the tube is 75mm not including the pin. I may use it as the main arm locking pin and try to make a smaller one for the hold open pin. The cap is threaded as you can see, which is all very sexy but my largest tap is 12mm and the smallest I can thread internally on the lathe is 19mm. The pin really needs to be 8mm min to avoid bending which means that making a tube, tapped 12mm and a cap with 8mm bore means it's all getting a bit tight. So maybe 14mm tap needed.

However, I could have a push on cap held with a roll pin OR I make the tube and thread it externally with a cap that screws over the top like a bottle.

Got to say it has a proper feel about it.

I think it's the grade of mild steel Chris, some is sold as easy to machine and comes up better, think it has a higher lead content and less carbon. Most of the stuff I've got is like you describe but I did get some nice bar from a model supplies place online once, something like macs model engineering supplies. Might be worth paying one of the model engineering shows a visit?

EDIT: this is where I was thinking of.

Jon hopefully going to Chester Mc on Sunday. It's one of the sale days. See what I can pick up there. Need some parting tools, a knurler and Vee blocks.
