Today is a very important day, It's the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt.

Battle of Agincourt.jpg

But it wasn't just the bowmen of Olde England that accounted for the defeat of the Froggies, it was the mud. There has been some bad weather that had made a mire of the battleground.
Of course the archers had a lot to do with it, but they were the peasants of England who couldn't afford to buy armour so were dressed in their normal clothes whereas the French were mainly the aristocracy who could afford armour, so when their horses were disabled and the riders ended up on foot wearing armour, in that sticky mud it was a major disadvantage and the pheasants who could duck and dive had the advantage so the clubs and knives went in, maybe that was where Corporal Jones got his saying from. If I am correct the Battle of Agincourt was where the first English soldier was killed by gunfire.

PS.
It's also my birthday!

Happy Birthday :-)

The bowmen of Olde England were Welsh according to my historian mate Andy.... Still it makes no difference a win is a win :-)

Happy birthday Chas.I think a lot of the bowmen were Welsh. The bodkin arrow played its part , it could pierce the armour.

They very likely came from all over The British Isles, there was a law that said all men had to do so many hours practice a week like a sort of early National Service.

Thanks for all the well wishes chaps, just got back from a treat from my wife, a lovely meal in Ewell at the Neapolitan Kitchen.

Bit late to the Party Chas, been out all day. Happy Birthday. Hope you get some fab prezzies.

BTW, I think you'll find Jonesy was a Lance Corporal.

Happy birthday sir!.. although i doubt the better half will share your enthusiasm for historic victory :)
