Can't disagree with the additional safety checks... but this doesn't seem to be safety related (as in you can check tyres without an electronic monitor):

* A tyre pressure monitor fitted by the manufacturer for vehicles registered after January 2012 must be working and must not be indicating a fault to pass.

It's only staing that if one is fitted it must be working and reliable as people rely on them and may not manually check if installed. Personally, my experience of them to date is that they are naff. Better buying a goo dgauge and keeping it in the car and do not trust the forecourts of filling stations. Even many tyre fitters have grossly inaccurate guages despite the potential consequences.

Mine and wife's motors (RAV4 and XC90) are both for MOT 19th Jan and will be liable for those checks. Can only be a good thing. Cat Converters must be present and working too so if anyone has removed theirs, you will fail. Apparently here in NI most of these items are advisory untill about June 2012 and then will be fully enforced. Bizarre thing is that testers have still been allocated 20mins for a car test, despite the extra testing required.

(We have separate MOT test centres that are operated by an Agency. No 'ordinary' garage can be a MOT test centre).
