Does anyone know of anyone who can cut/weld heavy aluminium? I have some legs from a hannibal rack which need cutting shorter and welding back together to fit an 80 roof profile? Banbury area ideal but will travel further

hi michael
if you put a picture of the feet o might be able to shed some light on different ways of loosing the hight in the feet as i have done a front runner RR before but not sure what the hannibal is like. i am in bristol and can get stuff like this done pretty well.

Great thanks - will get a pic asap - take a day or two as i am away from workshop

There are people in Chesterfield can certainly do this. Shayne at DP fabs has never turned down a cash job. Oh and his welding is very very tidy indeed.

Oops, C&D Fabs.

07977 351105. He won't know me by name, but the 'big bloke with the Landcruiser' might get you somewhere. Warning, he's very dry and a bit grumpy. But very good.

Welding ali is not really something you can do for a while. Its so hard once you can say to your self i am happy with your work you will need then to gain the experiance in making ali work.i can weld steel no probs but ali is a whole new experiance you have to be able to weld so fast its un true and i have only done nice and yhick ali.

Hopefully me, one day. Starting a welding course this month:dance:

Me too....one day, but as soon as i mentioned I was thinking of "having a go" at ali welding to local agricultural engineers I got the same response as from Stumog below - guess its a high art form !

i used to do a fair bit of ali mig welding its lots of fun once you get what you need to do. its also hard to get the welder set up right i get toying with the idea of setting my mig up at home for ali aswell.

Welding aluminium is quite specialised. Not impossible of course, but it's not where you'd start. It's something that you work up to - probably over several years. I haven't got there yet. Equipment set up is very important for non ferrous. You'll need AC TIG to start with. OK you can MIG it with pure Argon, but it's not the way to go, I'd suggest.

One day ......

There's a company called Barton Fabrications in/near to Bristol if that's handier for you - Mark Barton is your man there :)

Yup lots to learn here.... I think that the general consensus seems to be to learn to handle steel, then see where that leads..... Like the Grand National, take it one fence at a time...
