Will 315/75r16 spare tyre fit underneath?

Hi rob. The 100 series is wider. Unsure if one would fit under if im honest.

It's not width that's the issue. It's the rear x member where it gets hung up. That's why I have been building a carrier. The 33" Insas will go under there but they squeak a bit. But what hampers you is the width of the tyre. When they are up there, you're ground clearance is severely reduced. This is another reason why the 255s are such a good option. They fit right up inside the chassis. I think that if you could be bothered to move the plate that the winder hangs on, you could get a bigger tyre under there.

I can't remember if you have a tow bar Rob? Most tow bars get in the way so the spare sits further forwards than without. With a bar a 33 was a squeeze and would just miss the panhard, no way the 35s we had would fit. Without a tow bar you'll have a bit more space but I don't know if it's enough.

I do have a towbar, I would get rid of it if I could fit 315s under the truck. Not keen on rear wheel carriers.

The tow bar is the only thing that protects a tyre that big IF you can get it under there in the first place - which is what I just said.. They protrude a long way down under the truck and you will hit it off road. When I go to a pay and play, I have to drop the 285 - 33" off with the Marshalls. So a 315 -35 under there would be massive. I don't like carriers either, but that's why I am putting one on.

Hmm, might just stick with the 285s then. No regear needed and cheaper tyres. Decisions decisions

problem solved

I remember seeing this on you tube a while back when surfing for landcruiser porn. The idea is good but I would personally use solid alu riser blocks as opposed to those spindly things. You could also just lift the exsisting brackets and weld them to the top of chassis. I removed my spare wheel carrier a few weeks ago and I think its safe to say you could fit a tractor tire up in there!

While diffs are being mentioned, I'm surprised the 80 series rear diff bearing set Ian has for sale in his clear out haven't been snapped up, someone is going to end up kicking themselves when they need a rear diff rebuild / re-gear if those have gone and they have to pay full price

This is all long term stuff Jon, my rear ATs are well past their use by date and I want muds but don't want to get fresh tyres for Morocco just ot chew them up on the sharp rocks.

Also wont just a set of auto diffs do so no need for custom regears seeing as mine is a manual?

4.1's will do ok Rob. My comment about the bearings wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, but although front diffs give the most trouble the rears still wear out eventually, mainly the pinion bearings but if you're changing those then you might as well do the lot.
