Handbrake Solutions

Older style auto boxes used brake bands of this design. It's simple light and effective.Not quite maintenance free but pretty close.

Had a peek under there today whilst fitting the rear winch remote. Darn, it's tight around there. Can't see that I can easily fit a mechanism in there. The obvious issue is the old smoke tube. If I went for a custom jobbie, I'd re route it along the sill and chassis, where there is room around the rock slider. But as it is, it's really in the way. There is room around the rear diff companion flange though and that's a possibility.

But no 5 min solution that's for sure.

Might be worth looking on the interdebt at old VW Beetles for twin cable handbrakes and small calipers .
 
Right then Chaps. Money and time have been a little tight at the moment so haven't been able to move on this until now.

So as I am leaving Chris to fettle with the idea of the prop brake (cos I haven't got the skills) I have been looking into other calipers as I have said.

So far the outlay has been very high, a massive 18 quid would you believe. £15 for the caliper and carrier and £3 for the HB cable. I was very lucky to get them as the vehicle they were on was just about to go into the crusher. These particular calipers are like hens teeth. Very few models had them. As far as I can tell they are from the "sporty" versions of the avensis on some models between late 1999 and early 2003.

Any how this is where I am at so far. (sorry about the photos taken in my immaculately clean and tidy workshop)

And this is the slider that holds the caliper in place

This is the slider that holds the Avensis caliper in place. The rubber is the same length as what is left sticking out from the LC carrier so my thinking is to pop it off the Avensis slider and pop the LC rubber over the retaining lug on the avensis one. As I only have the 1 caliper at the moment I have not done this but there seems to be no reason why this should not hold it in place.

The idea behind using the existing carrier is so that I can keep with the slightly larger original LC pads.

Just a couple of pics here to show that the caliper fits perfectly into the LC carrier. I have now wound the caliper back but it looks as though there is plenty of room for the disc between the pads.

This is the HB mechanism. The cable passes through the U bracket and attaches where the split pin is. I assume that when it is pulled on it turns some sort of worm drive screw that pushes the piston out. Pulling on the lever does push out the piston and it returns when you let go (the spring pulling it back well) so it looks to be in good working order. The black plastic to the right is pushed out of the way in the pic but should spin round 180 degrees and act as a dust/crap cover/collector for the HB cable.

Grabbed the leaver off the Avensis just in case it came in handy. It is the same setup as on the LC, Just bolts down in different places. I am undecided as yet weather to use this lever or see if the existing one will work just as well.

Here there was just a small bracket welded to the floorpan. It looks like it was there just to hold the cables in place. Shouldn't be too hard to fab one up.

And this is the end that connects to the HB Actuator on the caliper. The cables seem to be plenty long enough to reach to the back axle and the Hy Brake line hoses look to be the same connection type.

Looks Ab-Fab Chris :) Is the big issue that your going to need the cable to pull backwards towards the rear of the truck?!

edit - I wonder if the whole hand brake mechanism will come off and rotate 180 degrees :think:

double edit - I hope you can make this work Chris :pray: Its going to be an epic mod if you can :icon-cool:

triple edit - Looks to me like the short cable coming away from that hand brake with the splitter on the end may fit the Collie hand brake :icon-biggrin:

Hope it works out for you , maybe it would help to have the suspension at its most extreme angle while choosing where to fix brackets ?

Right, I've read this thread from start to finish and am very interested to see what solutions you folk come up with as my handbrake only ever works for MOT time and I'd like something that works in between MOTs.

One thing that does confuse me, whilst I can appreciate the ideas, engineering and fab skills, why hasn't plumbing in a hydraulic handbrake lever into the rear brake lines been considered, and then as Chris has stated several times just keep the cable brake for mot and use the alt setup in between and for offroading. Like this:

I did consider that at one point Ryan and tbh there is no real reason why I would not go alpng those lines. The only reason I am not is that i am looking for something as simple amd as bolt on as possible that hopefully doesnt require any adjustment at all. Thinking out loud is there maybe a risk of handbrake seizeing if it only used once a year???

HELP!!!! My Drivers Side Wheel Won't Move.

Had another little play today and everything is looking pretty good. Actually mounted the caliper on the carrier and disc and it all firs perfectly with no clearance issues.

Pulled the brake on with the cable and I could not budge it for the life of me.

The new cable for the Hand/Emergancy brake should be plenty long enough to run along the rear axle then up to either attach to the body or depending on length directly to the lever. I will need to look at getting some extended brake hoses and the connection point on the caliper is at the bottom as opposed to the top so about 2" short but I might just be lazy there and just get an OEM center rear brake hose and joint it to the existing hose. Then again can anyone see any reason why the calipers could not just be put on the opposite sides to what they were on the Avensis. This would then bring the brake hose connection well within reach?????

Got the other side caliper coming hopefull before friday so I will have a good go then and let you all know how I get on.

Where's the bleed nipple? It's not clear in your pics, but that's the only reason I can think of that would work against flipping them.

Liking the look of this solution though, even though my handbrake is still fine after 3 days of off-road play at the beginning of the month.

I will HAVE to flip the calipers. On the Avensis they were mounted on the other side of the disc (towards the back of the car) I had not realised that by moving them to the front on the LC has turned them upside down and therefore the bleed nipple is now on the bottom so I wouldn't have been able to bleed the fully. Swapping the side will solve both that and the extended hose problem.

So effectively they're rotating around the vertical axis rather than flipping horizontally. That solves that problem then!
 
interesting stuff Chris, I don't suppose you have a VIN number for the car that calliper came off, or a more specific model description? Looks like a potentially very good solution and what works for a 90 should work for an 80 if nothing gets in the way :icon-cool:

You can buy the units new for around £160 a pop each :shock: :icon-exclaim:
 
I did look in the EPC but it's not clear the parts I can find for Avensis models with that style caliper are the ones Chris has used and of course the part numbers are different, because they are different, so they don't cross reference to anything useful :whistle:
 
I just searched through a dozen different models of Avensis in ToyoDiy 'till I found a caliper that looked like the one Chris has there, copied the part number and did a parts reference search and this lot came up. There's a few on the bay at the mo' :icon-biggrin: :shifty: :whistle: :lol:

Yes I found that part no, but it looks quite different to me and being fitted to so many different models wouldn't fit Chris's description of them being rare?
