LJ70 Build Thread!

Is it only me, but not seeing any of the pictures.
.
Some times they show, some times not.

Ben uses Photobucket to host.

Ever since Photobucket went through the "up-grade" it has been a bag of shit.

It is hit and miss if the Photobucket image servers are running or not.
Then there is the problem with their adverts, loading or not, which also stops their image servers too!

They really know how to spoil what was a very good reliable image host service.

Gra.

Nope, I'm just seeing the "You're using too much bandwidth" message.

It would look good... if Photobucket hadn't decided to through it's toys out of the pram and decide that the forum had used up too much of it's bandwidth accessing the photos...

Sounds good though; how did you get on with Hook Turns in Melbourne? We didn't find them too bad when we there because our 'Cruiser had out-of-state rego, so we ended up getting a bit more slack than we saw some of the VIC rego'd stuff getting!

Thanks guys.

My wallet is now £20 lighter, but the pics are back!

Think this thread must have got a few views for me to go over the monthly bandwidth limit. My account is now unlimited. :icon-cool:

Didn't have to do any hook turns Ed, just drove straight through the center of the city. :icon-cool:

Got the truck cleaned yesterday.

Now I wont be using the Astra for work I gave that a good clean to. FYI my cottage is the one on the left.

My little cottage (10ft x 10ft shed). :icon-cool:

P1040384_zps638fdd83.jpg

A big branch had fallen off one of the trees behind my cottage and was leaning from the tree to my roof. I'm sure the possums had been using it as a bridge to get on my roof, and wake me up in the process.

So anyway..............................................

I cut it out of the way yesterday with the chainsaws.

P1040367_zps93be8b5f.jpg

Loaded it all onto the new 70, and drove it round to the bomfire. :icon-cool:

Wow that lovlely big V8 TD has got some torque! :icon-twisted:

Few things I noticed................................

Its obviously the poverty spec model.

As there are hardly any switches.

P1040380_zps7306c220.jpg

Not even a clock.

How much does a clock cost Toyota who must buy millions of them? :icon-rolleyes:

P1040381_zps846e0287.jpg

Its still got the funny little opening windows like the previous model(s).

A bit more looking and messing and I discovered something I simply have to have.

Anyone who has got a 70 will know how pretty useless the glove box is as everything falls out when you open it. Oh and never open it whilst going up a hill. :icon-rolleyes:

Just to change the topic completely.............................

I've noticed on hot days my engine getting warm and me having to switch the electric fan on to cool things down.

So I'm thinking of getting rid of the big intercooler in front of the rad and fit a top mounted one instead.

So I was thinking of getting a standard Toyota 1KZ-TE intercooler from a prado 90 series/hilux.

Only difference is I will fit a bonnet scoop to hopefully get it working better.

Was then thinking of getting the fuel pump and injectors re-built and then get it tuned up on a dyno. :icon-smile:

Doug's Tubs are cool; I found them just as we were getting rid of our 73... and therefore the purchase was vetoed.

Have you worked out a decent cup holder system yet? I struggled to drive around work with my coffee without scalding myself, that's why I have a plastic cup with a lid on it!

As they don't have fog lights, or heated rear windows on the cab chassis there are a load of blanks as a result... The Troopy and our 73 both have heated back windows, so there's a switch for them.

UK 70's came with decent cup holders as standard, so no need to think about upgrading. :icon-cool:

There are many pros and cons with the top mounted intercooler. Here are my thoughts...

With a front mounted intercooler such as yours, you will generate more cool air when travelling and at idle. The problem with the top mounted intercooler is that it can actually act as a heatsink if you're at idla, as it works by forcing air into it via the hood scoop which requires forward movement. Considering you off road there will be plenty of times when your standstill spinning the wheels, but due to no forward movement your top mounted intercooler will do nothing but soak up heat...

However having a top mounted intercooler will meen less pipe work so there should be no lag in the turbo, not that I've heard there being any lag on the front mounted intercoole.... once done at a high standard (constant radius bends) you should be fine. Both methods have there pros and cons, and even I cant decide which would be better...

Saying all that, toyota did there research and obviously the top mounted intercooler was the best choice at the time.

Ben, how easy is it to find a 1kzte top mounted intercooler there in Australia, I really want one... or if you plan on taking your one off I would be interested in it as well.

Regarding your fuel pump, there is some info out there on how to tune them for more power, by fuelling them more. I would also recommend a straight through exhaust system (side exit) as these engines run on very high EGT temps, and from the research I've done, that is where the heat comes from when it cracks the head. Considering your skills, I'm sure you could make a nice 3" straight through exhaust. Glad to see you're enjoying the sun down there, we've just about got some here as well.

Thanks Beau.

I thought the top mount ones usually have a fan underneath them to help suck cold air through?

I take it UK 90 series (Colorados') didnt have top mount intercoolers then? Maybe its a Prado thing.

Found loads of 1KZ-TE engines on OZ ebay with an intercooler.

The wreckers yard that I got the seat belts from are bound to have an intercooler and pipework, will have to give them a call.

Its probably going to be a good 4-5months until we get any 30+ degree days as its Autumn now and getting cold, so I've got loads of time to get it sorted. :icon-biggrin:

I want to fit an pyro/exhaust temp gauge so I can monitor the temp.

I've read with great interest what Friday man has just done with his 90 series. Fitting a 3" exhaust, pyro gauge and turbo timer.

Would like to do something similar with mine. :icon-cool:

Thanks.

They are a really good club. :icon-biggrin:

I've got another trip next weekend.

I took my netbook to the club meeting last night and got a load more photos from the Licola trip. The first lot are from Troy, who is now doing a big month long trip up to the Kimberly's. :icon-cool:
