Good Morning

I've been an occasional lurker on here for a bit.

Having bought an old RIB, i need something more than my Merc Sprinter to tow it with and after having done some research I settled on a LC.

After trawling the internet for some time I found a 'bargain' 100 series that looked very good in the photo's and was, the garage assured me, the best I'd find for the money.

Armed with a one way plane ticket to Bradford and my nine year old son, who was coming along for the adventure, I set off for the garage.

The condition of the car was a bit underwhelming but I had committed myself with no plan as to what I'd do if I didn't buy it.

The drive back down south was OK if you exclude the engine management light coming on! Within days the air suspension developed a mind of its own and a look underneath revealed a lot of rust and frilly body panels - i'd bought a pup.

Changing one of the level sensors seemed to stabilise the suspension in the middle position.

Anyway I drove 15,000 miles in 14 months and sold it to Webuyanycar.com for £1000 less than I'd paid for it. In that time I put new tyres on it and paid £170 to get it through its MOT so it was actually quite cheap motoring but it was also a lesson.

I'm now on the lookout for a '92 - '95 12 valve automatic UK spec with a budget up to £7k. The 80 buyers guide on here should prove useful and i look forward to finding my new truck in the not too distant future.

Cheers

Guy

80s are old now, whichever one you buy, but that doesn't mean you won't find a good one.

I've seen plenty worse 100s (underneath) than 80s generally, but beware, there are "pup" 80s out there too!

Welcome aboard and yes, happy hunting!

Guy. You have a PM

This might interest you. Its a May 95 Uk spec 12V auto. Its rock solid bodily and mechanically. I've done a ton of work on it ( for my own benefit) so I know its good. Its done 180K and its been in storage a good while since I changed direction with a very similar 24VAuto.
I wasn't in the mood to sell it as was going to develop it into a decent "laner".

I would be looking for £7.5K as it has suspension done, snorkel, winch bumper, winch and everything works.
I'd say look at all others offered first, as I don't want to tread on others toes. but I did start this reply at about 11.30 and then got distracted.

Number plate M 7 SLY not included.

Thanks for that but in order to get any purchase past SWMBO, it has to be reasonably standard. Nice looking truck though.

Thankyou thankyou Guy, I guess I had a funny turn there. I know where I'd be casting my net first if "standard" is your requirement. Its one I have driven in the past and its a real "gud'n"

After a very short search and one post on here I am the proud owner of a 1994 UK spec automatic 80 series previously owned by Chris on here and featuring on the 80 forum as "What makes a decent 80".

It's just about exactly what I was after and my fears about whether my 6'3" fat knacker frame would fit proved to be unfounded particularly with the seat extenders made by Chris.

Plans for it are to keep it pretty standard - it's going to replace a BMW estate as my daily driver plus it will be pressed into service as a tow vehicle for a RIB, once that recovers from having been reduced to its constituent parts in my garage!

In the meantime I'm just going to enjoy driving it.

Now, who does good deals on BFG AT's?

Cheers

Guy

Nice one - well done.

Tyres - try Paddocks - I know they're Landy specialists, but they have specials on tyres sometimes - had a couple of decent deals from them.

Or Camskill, now I think about it...

Guy lovely to meet you all this weekend. Very pleased that the old bus went to a good home.

Weather stayed good so I hope you enjoyed your camping trip. Errm, one question though.

Did you finally manage to get your hands on the keys and drive it yourself.......?

In My opinion, It does not matter how good a condition is advertised in. The fact is these are all old vehicles, Anyone buying one should be prepared to spend some extra money and time and love for the vehicle to come to your expectations or whatever one feels is a comfortable ride for them. By comfort I am implying peace of mind and reliability
Good luck hunting :)

Congratulations! You have indeed bought a great example of the might 80 series Land Cruiser, I should know I used to own it. I hope you enjoy the ownership experience as much as I did.

Thanks for that.

Chris mentioned you had owned it and I found the new keeper supplement slip with your details on it in the vehicle document wallet.

It goes in to get some BFG AT's tomorrow and I keep looking at the steering wheel that Karl Webster has for sale.

The only problem so far is Chris had left some soft rock instrumental CD in the stereo which I inadvertently turned on.

Oh heck, I never checked in there. That's probably some Joe Satriani or something I think it's Super Colossal. Please don't chuck it out!

I think one of Karl's re-done wheels would be a great addition. Never understood quite how the covering got like that.

BFGs will be sweet.
