Romania 2015

It's been snowing here, but now windy and wet, which feels even colder than when it was -4

Booked an extra week's holiday for next year. So I hope this trip comes off or it'll be an expensive week at home for me. Either way I am going somewhere! Could always do Morocco I guess. I do think we need to firm up some plans though. Not right down to how many pairs of socks but at least in terms of ferries and an RV point on the other side. Bit of prior planning gives us something to aim for. I like loose but there a difference between loose and no arrangments at all. I want to see a convoy!

10-4 Good Buddy, a convoy would be preferable. Are we all going to try to get on the same ferry? or have a regroup on t'other side?

Well, I would see French coast to Frankfurt as a whole day really. So I'd need to get to Dover as well. I either come down on the Friday ready for a crossing on the Saturday morning OR perhaps get a crossing Friday afternoon so we are on the opposite bank for Saturday wheels up and away. I'd rather not leave here the same day as driving to Frankfurt. It doesn't leave any slack anywhere for anything. So I guess the start has to be on Friday. Just a question of when to cross. Fri eve or Sat am. Preference Chas, I feel at the second is to actually get over there rather than get all the way to Dover and then stop. By the time we're up, had breakfast, got to customs, faffed about it'll be 10.00 and the day will be half done. I don't mind doing tunnel if the whole arrival and boarding malarky is faster. I know the crossing is, but the ferry isn't exactly slow. But there is lots of waiting about. It's dead time. I'd rather camp in France if I'm honest than here.

Maybe something like a 15.00 crossing? TIme to get clear fo Calais, set up have a beer and bed? Quick look says it a reasonable cost. My oly problem is that this is super super peak. Friday in the middle of August? Mental.

OK for me Christmas and New Year out of the way 1st

then Daughter 16th birthday on 5-1-15

then the trip

The trip back on euro-tunnel is book

My plan is to use euro tunnel on the way out as well on Saturday

My hope is then meet everyone at Frankfurt campsite

After that depends on speed i am more than happy to meet at the campsites on the way down because of the trailer i will be pulling. U understand i need a lot of spares for a land rover

About hoilday time i have 2 full weeks plus there is a bank holiday just in case we might need more time to get home

Recovery

Made sure you are well cover in all the counties we will be in

I now have ADAC

Breakdown

If i see you or you ring me and i am behind you i will stop and stay with you and help as much as poss. The trip can wait

How does the tunnel work in terms of pre booking. Say I don't want to buy a flexi ticket with a premium price on it. But I miss the crossing I intended to catch. Do I just wait in an area on standby as it were til there is a slot, or what? Looking at the single on the weekend it's £78 at the minute. Sounds OK. Maybe a return is slightly cheaper. But will it go up if I leave it? I guess there is a good chance the train will fill up too and there be NO room. Happy to book pretty much now if needs be. I can book a load of time off and if I am home on time just cancel it. I've bought an extra week from the company.

So it looks liek plan A might be to get there Friday and then cross in a bunch on Saturday. I really do want to get a bit of a string of trucks together, even if it's only 3 or four. That's the start of the holiday. And you know you have some people together. From experience, even just laning, you all agree to RV somewhere in Wales or whatever and you find that only two people turn up. If we start together, we arrive together. What time have you booked your crossing RR?

I'm only a couple of hours from Dover so getting there for the Saturday crossing would suit me better, what time for crossing and what ferry company?

I'm easy and so happy to go along with whatever plan evolves .

Hmm, pretty easy from Tilbury. It's 4 hours for me if everything went swimingly and I had my foot down. But then again, I'd rather leave at midnight, Friday and see some space on the tarmac than perhaps drive down on tickover with all the other idiots on a Friday. M1 is shocking at the best of times.

What's this I hear about the Drtford crossing now. You have to book in advance????

Day one "the crossing" is going to be a chore whichever way it plays out . Chas and Ratrace are 2 hours away , me and Chris 4 hours away . Is Frankfurt where we intend to spend the first night ? if so would it not be best to allow eta there dictate what time we all get on the ferry or chunnel ?

Yeah, just Goggled it. What a PITA. It's supposed to be making the wait shorter. You will still have to slow down. It's not like you can do 70 through the pay point. Think of all those people who will lose their jobs. At least you can do one off payment. You don't have to have an account. Why not keep one lane for cash only for people who rarely use it. If you are a regular then you wouldn't sit in that queue. Youd do it automatically. But for people like me who go through twice a year I'd rather just wait 5 mins which is less than the 45 I normally wait..

i only said Frankfurt because it allows 475 miles approx from London

Frankfurt to Vienna 444 miles

Vienna to Arad Romania 315 miles

Arad to Comarnic 300 miles

changing the route home because i might go here as i am a very big big big kid (sorry)

I thought that sort of insanity was reserved for banana republics like here in Ireland. M50 bridge works like that. if you forget to pay at some (in)convenient location within 24 hours you have to wait 10 days for a letter so you can pay double. Forget or don't recieve the letter, it multiplies by 10 after another week, couple weeks later and its in the hundreds. Total scam city.

That Dartford bridge is quite cool at night though, its plenty high!

RR I could spend a day in there. But no British section? Oh right, it would have no trains running and the roads would be clogged. I get it.

Hmmm 6 hours non stop Calais to Frankfurt not much fun in that , i guess i should have checked the distance first but you get the idea , choose where we spend the first night on foriegn soil and what time we would like to arrive there then work it backwards so we know what time to book the crossing .
