Crossings booked on the tunnel. From the first stop to the German site it's 361 miles. To do that in 5 hrs is averaging 70mph. That's some going. I need to work on streamlining the roof tent pronto!

The hours are nonsensical in the real world Rich , they are added to lend some perspective as we drive , i suppose the distance between each planned stop would be better but its all the same really , we can't predict roadworks or break stops but the way my mind works is hey we've had a clear run for 3 solid hours so we can afford an hours stop for a 3 course meal

I agree Shayne. With the UKs roads in the state they are and the European roads in pretty good shape you can see where some of our money has gone. Best we make good use of it I say. We drove from Brugge to Berlin in one day. I'll have to look up how far that was.

Just looked, 509 miles which we managed in 8 hrs. This will be a lot less in one day for sure.

Just recently I find myself driving a fair bit slower than I used to, maybe it's mellowing old age or maybe the recent increase in fines for speeding having an effect, plus I have been getting a rhythmic sort of vibration at over 65mph so I usually stick to 60/65mph these days, as a plus it does wonders for the fuel consumption.

Lets just see how it goes , when you have been driving in a straight line for an hour and the end of the road at the brow of the hill has still got no closer it alters your perception of speed .

Love my auto. Don't find it soporific. Would get another in a heartbeat. Don't find manual any less/more tiring.

Anyway, I know what you mean by the brow of the hill being no closer, I think that more than anything else is inducive of the sleep factor.

The trip to Berlin had us going at 133 (120 by the sat nav), as fast as the Space Star would go. Lynn was very quiet. I've never felt so alive and alert, it was wonderful. Lynn had no excuse to lean over, look at the speedo and give me a hard stare. I shall be exploring, if only briefly, how fast a virtually standard 80 with roof tent anchor will go. I can safely say I felt there was zero chance of me falling asleep at 120mph.

Ignoring my trip to Scotland because british motorways are so fecking boring, my only long trip has been to Switzerland and back. done in a day (one way) and the miles just dis appeared (good ol BMW) I did find however that changing the satnav from 1 mile to 100 miles helped though. Dunno why, just made it seem less far. As for autos or manuals on the motorway, that makes no difference until you come off at a junction.

I mentioned gears not because of the nuisance of changing but because i expect 65 to be either at the top end of the powerband in a lower gear or beneath the powerband in a higher gear with my high revving engine which does not like to toodle along .

5th will pull from 50 to past 100 without a trailer on so i will just have to wait and see i suppose .

Surely its original gearing which will be perfectly happy to do 60 -80 in 5th. Yuy dont need to have the magic rubber band when trundling along.
