Romania 2017 - Comarnic Visit

No problem with the salt mines Chas, especially if it's a hot day, as long as you and Shayne / Helen don't mind a repeat trip.

The ridge is a must, and as its off-road, I don't suppose that will offer any objections to the regulars.

The Transfagarasan is an all day asphalt haul, there and back, but the scenery makes it well worthwhile (IMO). What that needs is an early start, leaving the house at 8:00 am preferably.

We can mix it so that we have easy days and harder days in between. We can always be lazy and park up but the river and BBQ all day, that's just down the road.

We can also have a short walking session, if you remember the Diciu, where the police stopped us right at the beginning, when we get to the end, to the "no motor vehicles beyond this point" sign, there's a 20 minute walk to some interesting naturally eroded rocks, they call them the "ciuperc" (mushrooms) or "Babele" the gossiping old ladies.

How are your legs these days Chas, are you up for a shortish walk?

There's the Monestery in the cave as well, that's kinda in the same direction...
Unfortunately Clive I can do little walking these days, I'm usually on a diet of Paracetamol, so wherever we go I will be the car minder.
I wouldn't be able to cope with the salt mines or the 'mushrooms' as much as I would like to.
Sitting in the 80 and driving are no problem at all, thank God.
Oh and BBQ by the river is a must.

Last time i went to Europe i climbed up some mountain on the first day, was totally f***ed the rest of the holiday, still, not bad for a fat a**e lorry driver.

Yeah, I think you should visit the salt mines again, I loved the photos
And the mushroom rocks sound cool too - need photos :)

Sorry to hear that Chas. Still, IIRC, the salt mine visit tour is about 2 hrs, so you could have a drink at that cafe/bar place and a kip for an hour, we'll soon be with you, and the monastery in the cave visit is about the same.

Yes it's best to call Adnan on 00 49 40 23919302 he speaks pretty good English and is easy to get along with and has a sense of humour.
Just tried ringing ( a few times) and all i get is beep beep beep beep and it hangs up, is that german for busy or does my mobile not want to call the germans? I may have to chat someone up with a landline.

Ps. Yes, ive been paid, one more to go boys n girls!

I think that's just the busy tone.

Photos are easy Andy, there's loads on the interweb, here's a few if it doesn't spoil the "fun" for the others...

And there's the "Sphinx" as well....

It's a shame there's no people in these pics to give some scale, but if you imagine the height of its "chin" above the rock slab at the base, it's taller than the average bloke, so they're several meters high... IMG_7264.JPG

Ok so its not my phone, they were just busy. Not busy now but not answering... I shall try again tomorrow.

Adnan, what a nice bloke!
How did you get my number? err off the internet.
No someone must have given it to you, err, someone gave me it because you speak English.
That is good, this means they are happy with my service.

Did he ask where you were planning to go on your trip? He was a bit surprised we would voluntarily go to Romania but sent a route map link plus a whole load of maps in the post. All in German but useful all the same.

He was more grateful to have a happy person on the phone. apparently most people are miserable. I told him there was a group of us going to Romania but where I was making the call from had bad reception so there were bits of conversation missed out, Ive paid, hes sent stuff to my email, i'm happy.

Clive, just so you know... it was 3 years today since that photo entered your life :)

Just jumping in here as we are considering going on this trip next year if there is one, just how long does it take to get there and whats the norm for overnight stops?

I can't comment Andy as its my first time, Chas and I are stopping 3 nights on the way there from London ish. Shayne who has the furthest to go is stopping 4. I believe we're having a leisurely drive there rather than go as far as possible in a day to get there asap.

Its a slog Andy make no mistake expect to be on the road 9am to 9pm , motorway monotony is the killer so breaks are more or less compulsory . But its easy driving and twice i have hammered home with just 2 overnight stops in service station car parks so its what you make of it really , i suppose you could make the trip alone a 2 week excursion by spending just a day or so at Clive's .

I should add that this is my third trip out with my better half who does like hotels pools and pina colada which speaks for itself i guess .

On our first trip there Andy the weather was atrocious took us four days IIRC, while we were there a few of us were taken ill with a stomach bug.
As I was the last one to succumb I wasn't in a fit state to drive when the others left, so I stayed at Clive's for an extra day.
When I finally set out I got back to Calais on my own in just two days, but that was with constant driving until I was tired and pulling into a service station for a kip (don't use the Mway pull ins, people can get targeted in them) I always use a service area that has lots of people about, truck stop facilities, showers usually, and reasonable food.
